Netflix error NW-2-5 means your device took too long to connect to Netflix. Netflix says it usually points to an internet connection problem on the device or home network. The code identifies a connection timeout, not the specific cause: it could involve the device, Wi-Fi, router, DNS, internet provider, or restrictions on a shared network.
Check whether the device is connected to the internet
On the Netflix error screen, select More Details > Check your network, if that option is available. A red X indicates the device is not connected. You can also open another internet-enabled app or run the device’s network test. If those checks fail, troubleshoot the device’s internet connection before changing Netflix settings.

Restart the device and network equipment
- Restart the viewing device: Unplug it, wait at least 15 seconds, reconnect it, and try Netflix again. Netflix specifies waiting 3 minutes when the device is a cable box.
- Restart the modem and router: Turn off the viewing device. Unplug the modem and router for 30 seconds, reconnect them, and wait one minute before turning the device back on. The equipment may take longer to reconnect.
Check whether Wi-Fi signal is the problem
If the device is on Wi-Fi, try moving the router closer or to a central location, raising it off the floor, and placing it away from other wireless devices and metal appliances. Netflix also suggests considering a wireless repeater in the same room or asking your internet provider about router firmware or a newer router. These steps may improve signal quality but will not resolve every possible cause of NW-2-5.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the device supports Ethernet, try a direct cable connection as a test. If Netflix connects over Ethernet but not Wi-Fi, that points toward a wireless signal or configuration issue; it does not rule out other network problems.

Consider the network type and who controls it
Public or shared Wi-Fi, such as a hotel or apartment network, may be congested or may block streaming services. Ask the network owner or administrator whether streaming is restricted. Cellular, satellite, and mobile hotspot connections may also be too slow or unstable for streaming; ask the provider whether the connection supports streaming video.
Check DNS settings on PlayStation or Xbox
Netflix says incorrect DNS settings on PlayStation and Xbox consoles can prevent them from finding Netflix servers. Use the console’s network setup and set DNS to Automatic. For PlayStation, Netflix also specifies automatic IP and MTU settings, DHCP Host set to Don’t Specify, and Proxy Server set to Don’t Use. If the error continues, ask your internet provider to investigate DNS.

Decide whether the issue is local or broader
- Only one device is affected: Check that device’s internet connection and network settings first.
- Several devices are affected: The modem, router, home connection, or provider may be involved.
- The issue happens only on Wi-Fi: Test a wired connection if possible and investigate wireless signal quality.
- The issue happens on public or shared Wi-Fi: Check with the network administrator about congestion or streaming restrictions.
- The connection is a hotspot, cellular, or satellite service: Ask the provider whether it supports stable video streaming.
When to contact your internet provider
If the checks above do not resolve the error, ask your internet provider to check for an area outage, modem or router problems, incorrect network settings, or DNS issues. Explain whether one device or several are affected and whether the device connects by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Netflix suggests testing fast.com in a browser and trying Netflix again before ending the support call.
