Neither a Raspberry Pi 5 nor a VPS is automatically the cheapest way to run a 24/7 YouTube stream in India. A Pi can have a low monthly cash cost if you already own the hardware and have reliable, unlimited home broadband; a VPS avoids buying and powering a home device, but its true value depends on renewal pricing, encoder capacity, bandwidth terms and how much administration you are willing to do. Compare both over the same 30 days—and include reliability and recovery, not just the headline bill.
What the cost comparison must include
A fair comparison separates the cash bill from the work and interruption risk. The Pi has an upfront equipment cost and recurring electricity; the VPS has recurring rental and possibly software or data charges. Both depend on a stable upstream connection and an encoder that can sustain the stream settings you actually need.

- Cash cost: hardware and accessories, electricity, broadband upgrades or paid data, VPS renewals, and any add-ons.
- Streaming capacity: whether the device or server can encode your chosen codec, resolution and frame rate continuously. A bandwidth allowance alone does not establish encoding capacity.
- Operations: who handles power, router and ISP outages, software updates, stream restarts and monitoring.
The examples below are snapshots, not a like-for-like performance test. Prices, provider plans and electricity tariffs can change; verify the relevant listing, renewal terms and your own bill before deciding.
Raspberry Pi 5: upfront cost and monthly running cost
Upfront hardware
A retailer listing retrieved in 2026 showed a Raspberry Pi 5 4GB board at ₹6,499 including GST. Treat that as a time-sensitive board listing, not a complete setup price or a guaranteed current price. It excludes items such as suitable power, storage, a case or cooling as needed, and backup power.

- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
Raspberry Pi recommends a 27 W USB-C power supply for Pi 5, rated at 5 V and 5 A. With a 5 V, 3 A supply, downstream USB current is limited to 600 mA. Raspberry Pi OS Lite setup guidance recommends at least 8 GB of SD storage. See Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation before choosing power and storage.
Estimate electricity using measured wall draw
Use a plug-in power meter to measure the complete setup at the wall while it is streaming the intended workload. For a 30-day month, calculate: average wall draw in watts × 720 hours ÷ 1,000 = kWh. Multiply that kWh figure by the marginal rate on your electricity bill.
Raspberry Pi’s 2023 launch announcement gives around 12 W as peak consumption under its most intensive workload. At that draw for 720 hours, the calculation is 8.64 kWh. That is an illustration using the stated peak, not a measured typical 24/7 streaming draw; wall losses and your encoder workload affect the actual result. India has no single household electricity rate: the Central Electricity Authority’s compilation lists state- and slab-specific tariffs. Use the applicable rate and conditions for your connection, not a national assumption. Check the CEA tariff compilation alongside your bill.

Internet and household reliability
Do not count your whole broadband bill as a streaming cost if you would pay it anyway. Count an upgrade or paid data use if the stream causes it. At a constant video bitrate, 30 days of video alone is approximately:
| Video bitrate | Video data over 30 days | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 3 Mbps | 0.97 TB | Decimal units; excludes audio and protocol overhead |
| 5 Mbps | 1.62 TB | Decimal units; excludes audio and protocol overhead |
| 6 Mbps | 1.94 TB | Decimal units; excludes audio and protocol overhead |
These are calculations from a constant bitrate running for 30 days, not a prediction of your provider’s billing meter. Confirm your plan’s fair-use policy, sustained upload performance and outage history. A power cut, router failure, home ISP outage, storage problem or time spent restoring the stream can make the home setup less dependable even when those costs do not appear on the monthly bill.
VPS: recurring rental, bandwidth and constraints
For a VPS, use the actual renewal bill—not just a promotional or introductory figure—and confirm whether taxes, traffic, software or support change the total. Check the plan’s bandwidth allowance and traffic policy, CPU or GPU and encoder capacity, remote access, operating system, permitted stream count and support scope.

As a provider example, NivoHost’s page checked in 2026 advertised its lowest streaming RDP tier at ₹699/month for one stream at 360p/10fps, with 20 TB bandwidth, 2 CPU cores and 4 GB RAM. Its ₹999 tier advertised 480p/15fps; higher tiers claimed greater resolution and resources. The provider also advertised tax-included pricing and 20 TB on the listed tiers. These are provider claims, not an independent test of sustained encoding or availability; verify current plan details and renewal terms directly. Review NivoHost’s listed streaming plans.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor context, YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate for 1080p30 is 5 Mbps. At that constant bitrate, video alone carries about 1.62 TB in 30 days, below the 20 TB allowance advertised in the NivoHost example. That comparison does not prove the server can encode or push an uninterrupted stream at your chosen settings. The video-data calculation excludes audio and protocol overhead.
Set a YouTube-compatible stream target before buying hardware
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. It supports up to 60 fps. Use the bitrate row for your chosen codec; H.264 and HEVC/H.265 or AV1 recommendations are not interchangeable.

| H.264 example | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps |
YouTube’s examples for other codecs differ—for instance, its table gives 6 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30 using AV1 or H.265. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the codec-specific table and current instructions. Run an upload speed test and test with representative audio and movement, then monitor stream health. NIC’s webcast service requests 2–4 Mbps of dedicated network bandwidth per stream in its own service context; that is not a universal YouTube minimum and does not replace YouTube’s resolution-specific recommendations. See NIC Webcast Services.

Raspberry Pi 5 is a 64-bit quad-core board announced in 2023. Its video hardware includes a 4Kp60 HEVC decoder, but a decoder specification does not show that the board can encode a particular live profile in real time. The available cited YouTube guidance describes acceptable ingest settings; it does not benchmark sustained Pi 5 encoding.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before committing to a Pi for a particular resolution, codec and frame rate, run that exact workload for a representative period. Check for dropped frames, CPU saturation, thermal throttling, audio/video sync problems and successful reconnects. Do not infer reliable 1080p or 4K encoding from the decoder specification alone.

Calculate your own break-even point
Use the same comparison period and make the assumptions visible. Let:
- H = complete Pi setup cost, including required accessories;
- L = the setup’s useful life in months;
- E = measured monthly electricity cost;
- I = incremental internet cost caused by streaming;
- R = the value you assign to maintenance time and expected interruption cost.
Then the approximate monthly equivalent for the Pi is H ÷ L + E + I + R. For the VPS, let V be the verified renewal bill plus data or software add-ons and comparable management or interruption costs. A lower bill is not necessarily a lower total cost if it requires more troubleshooting or has limitations that force a plan upgrade. There is no defensible break-even number without your actual purchase, tariff, provider and workload inputs.
Which option fits your situation?
A Pi may suit you if
- You already own the board and the necessary accessories, so little or no new hardware spend is needed.
- Your home has dependable power and upload connectivity, and the ISP’s data terms suit continuous streaming.
- You can test the intended encoder profile and are comfortable maintaining a Linux-based device and recovering it after local outages.
A VPS may suit you if
- You prefer not to leave a computer running at home and can verify that the plan permits your use and supports the required workload.
- The renewal price, data allowance and add-ons are clear for the period you need.
- You are prepared to configure and manage the server, and have confirmed its real encoding capacity rather than relying only on advertised bandwidth or resolution.
Neither option removes the need to consider YouTube’s rules. Use content you own or are licensed to stream, and review YouTube’s policies on copyright and reused content before running a continuous loop. Live-streaming access and channel status can also affect whether you can go live; check the current YouTube Studio notices for your channel.
Or let it run in the cloud
