Raspberry Pi 4 vs. Raspberry Pi 5 for an FFmpeg YouTube Loop Stream

Pi 4 and Pi 5 can both be used for FFmpeg YouTube loops, but the encoding path matters. Learn how to check your file, configure a test, and plan for long runs.

Both Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 5 can be used to loop a video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, but neither board is a guaranteed 24/7 encoder. For a stream that needs H.264 transcoding, Pi 4 has a documented hardware H.264 encoding path up to 1080p30; Pi 5 uses software video encoders, so CPU load and encoder settings matter. If the source can be sent without re-encoding, the choice may depend more on your file, FFmpeg build, cooling, power and network than on the board name.

Which Raspberry Pi should you choose?

Decision point Raspberry Pi 4 Raspberry Pi 5
H.264 encoding Raspberry Pi lists H.264 encoding up to 1080p30. Its encoding note includes a Pi 4 configuration using h264_v4l2m2m. Raspberry Pi 4 Model B specifications Raspberry Pi documents software video encoders; its comparison configurations include libx264. Raspberry Pi 5 encoding note
Practical implication A sensible candidate if you need to transcode H.264 within the published capability. This does not establish that every file or continuous-stream workload will work. Can encode using software, but the CPU workload depends on resolution, frame rate and encoder settings. The board is not automatically the better choice for transcoding.
Low-latency guidance No directly comparable latency result for this file-loop use case is established by the cited sources. Raspberry Pi’s documented --low-latency option applies to rpicam-vid, not FFmpeg, and trades coding efficiency and maximum frame rate. Raspberry Pi camera software documentation
Connectivity details established here The Pi 4 Model B specification lists Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi, microSD storage and USB-C 5V input with a minimum 3A rating. A full connectivity comparison is not established by the cited sources.

Choose based on the workload you will actually run. If you already own a board, test it before buying another: stream copying may avoid video encoding entirely when the file’s streams and output path are compatible. If you are buying specifically to transcode H.264, Pi 4’s documented hardware path is relevant; Pi 5’s software path means you should validate its load at your intended output settings. The published capabilities and example configurations are not a guarantee of sustained streaming.

Check the video before choosing an encoder

A filename ending in .mp4 does not tell you whether its video and audio streams are suitable for your planned YouTube ingest. Check the codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio and container first. FFmpeg’s installed build also determines which encoders and protocol features are available; confirm the options on the Pi you will use rather than assuming all builds are identical. FFmpeg documentation

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If the existing streams are compatible: stream copying can avoid video encoding and its associated processor load. Check that the container and protocol combination also supports those streams.
  • If video or audio is incompatible with your output: transcode the stream using an encoder available in your FFmpeg build. On Pi 4, investigate the documented H.264 hardware path; on Pi 5, account for software-encoding load.
  • If uncertain: inspect the installed FFmpeg build and test the actual input and output configuration. No board specification can certify every file, codec combination or FFmpeg command.

Set YouTube’s output mode before building the command

Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. Its guidance specifies supported settings and recommends different bitrates by output mode, so there is no single bitrate that applies to every stream. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS ingestion. Check the current table when configuring your stream: YouTube Live encoder settings.

In YouTube Studio’s live setup, use the server address and stream key YouTube provides for that broadcast. Treat the key like a password: do not put a real key in a public script, screenshot or article, and do not share it. The precise setup flow and available ingest details can vary with YouTube’s interface and live configuration.

Configure FFmpeg to loop and pace the file

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option for repeating an input and -re as a way to read input at its native rate. Put input options before the input they apply to. The appropriate output options depend on the file, encoder, installed build and YouTube’s selected ingest settings. FFmpeg command-line documentation · FFmpeg protocol documentation

  1. Inspect your FFmpeg build. Check which encoders and output protocols it supports. Do not assume an encoder name works simply because it appears in instructions for a different build or board.
  2. Choose copy or transcode. Use stream copy only if both existing streams and their container/protocol combination are compatible with the output. Otherwise select encoders available on your system and set the output to match YouTube’s current settings.
  3. Set input looping and real-time pacing. Apply -stream_loop -1 to repeat the input indefinitely, and use -re when you need FFmpeg to read the file at native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. Keep these input options before the relevant input path.
  4. Send to YouTube’s provided ingest details. Use YouTube’s server address and stream key in your local command or configuration. Keep credentials private; no real-looking key should be copied from an example.
  5. Test the complete path. Run the intended file, resolution, frame rate and audio settings while checking FFmpeg output, board temperature and throttling, network behavior, dropped frames, and YouTube’s ingest or preview status.

FFmpeg options and hardware encoder availability vary across builds. The sources do not establish one universally valid copy-and-paste command for both boards and every input, so build and verify the command against your installed FFmpeg and actual file rather than relying on a generic recipe.

Prepare a Pi for a long-running stream

  • Power: use a suitable supply for the board and its connected hardware. Raspberry Pi’s Pi 4 Model B specification lists USB-C 5V input with a minimum 3A rating; this is a manufacturer specification, not a runtime or comparative power measurement.
  • Cooling: test the intended enclosure and cooling under the actual encoding workload. A brief successful start does not establish that the system will sustain the same behavior over a long run.
  • Network: a wired connection can be a practical choice for a fixed installation, but Ethernet does not guarantee stable upstream bandwidth. Check for sustained upload capacity and interruptions on your own connection.
  • Recovery: plan how FFmpeg will be restarted after a process failure, reboot or network interruption. A loop option repeats the input while the process runs; it does not by itself supervise or restart FFmpeg.
  • Copyright and channel rules: make sure you have rights to the video and audio you stream, and review YouTube’s rules for live content and monetization. Repeated or reused content can raise separate channel-policy issues; looping a file does not grant permission to use it.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder The installed build may not include that encoder or hardware path. Inspect the encoders available in that build and select one it supports. Do not assume Pi 4 and Pi 5 expose the same options.
High CPU load, slow encoding or dropped frames The selected resolution, frame rate, encoder and preset may exceed what the active encoding path sustains. Confirm whether the file can be stream-copied; otherwise test lower output demands or an available hardware path and verify using YouTube’s ingest preview.
YouTube does not receive the stream Incorrect server address or key, an unsupported output configuration, or a network issue. Recheck the current YouTube live setup details, confirm the selected RTMP/RTMPS configuration, inspect FFmpeg’s error output and verify upstream connectivity.
Audio or video is rejected or missing Input streams may not match the selected output or ingest requirements. Inspect codecs and stream layout, then copy only compatible streams or transcode with encoders present in your FFmpeg build. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings for audio and video requirements.
The stream stops after running successfully Process exit, power, thermal behavior or network interruption. Review logs and board conditions, then add a process supervision and restart plan appropriate to your operating system. A successful short test is not proof of 24/7 reliability.
