Ran a Command From a Fake Cloudflare Check? What to Do Now

A fake Cloudflare verification prompt that asks you to run a Windows command may be a ClickFix attack. Here’s how to respond and protect your accounts.

If you ran a command prompted by a fake Cloudflare “verify you’re human” check, treat the device as potentially compromised. Stop interacting with the page, disconnect the device from the network, and use a separate trusted device to secure important accounts. The page’s appearance cannot tell you what payload ran—or whether the computer is now clean.

Why a fake Cloudflare check can be dangerous

These lures are a form of social engineering known as ClickFix: a page pretends to offer a routine fix or human-verification step, then persuades you to execute an attacker-supplied command. The instructions may direct you to Windows Run, Windows Terminal, or PowerShell. A fake Cloudflare Turnstile interaction may copy a command to your clipboard for you to paste and run.

Running the command can download malware and sidestep protections aimed at ordinary browser downloads. Microsoft Threat Intelligence reported that observed payloads include information-stealing malware and data exfiltration; some campaigns have also delivered remote-access tools. Payloads vary, so the fake page alone cannot identify what happened on your computer. Microsoft’s August 21, 2025 analysis describes the technique and observed outcomes. A U.S. HHS cybersecurity alert also explains how ClickFix prompts users to run commands.

As a safety rule, a human-verification challenge should not require you to run an arbitrary command in Windows Run, Terminal, or PowerShell. If a page asks you to do that, stop.

What to do immediately

  1. Stop following the page’s instructions. Close the tab or browser. Do not run another command, download a “cleanup” tool offered by the page, or follow its further steps.
  2. Disconnect the affected device from the network. Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet while you arrange help. This is a precaution to limit further communication; it does not undo anything the command may already have done.
  3. Use a different, trusted device for account security. Start with your primary email and financial accounts. Change passwords, revoke active sessions where the service allows it, and enable multifactor authentication if available. Do not sign in or change passwords from the possibly compromised computer.
  4. If it is a work-managed device, contact your IT or security team promptly. Follow your organization’s incident process. Do not try to clean the device or delete files and other evidence on your own unless your team instructs you to.
  5. Arrange a reputable malware assessment. For a personal device, use current, reputable security software or a qualified technician. Explain that you ran a command from a fake verification page. A scan is useful, but a clean result does not prove that every possible infection or change has been removed.
  6. Check for account misuse from the trusted device. Review sign-in activity and security alerts for important accounts. If you see suspicious activity or lose access, use that service’s official account-recovery process.

If you only copied the command—or are unsure whether it ran

Copying text to the clipboard is not the same as executing it. If you only copied the command and did not paste or run it, the described execution step may not have occurred. Still, close the page, do not run the copied text, and clear the clipboard if you know how. If you are uncertain whether you pressed Enter, clicked a Run prompt, or otherwise executed it, take the cautious route: disconnect the device and get it assessed.

How to handle work and personal devices

Work-managed computer

Report the incident to your employer’s IT or security team as soon as possible, even if the computer seems normal. Tell them what the page asked you to do and whether you pasted or ran anything. They can decide how to contain and investigate the device under the organization’s procedures.

What you can—and cannot—conclude

  • If you ran the command: the device may be compromised, but the page does not reveal which payload ran or whether it completed successfully.
  • If the computer looks normal: that alone does not establish that it is safe.
  • If a scan reports no threat: that is useful information, not proof that no malware or account exposure occurred.
  • If you do not know what happened: tell the technician or IT team exactly what you remember, including the application you used and any command or prompt you saw. Do not guess at the malware identity.

Fake Cloudflare checks are one version of a broader ClickFix tactic. In a campaign reported on May 26, 2026, Malwarebytes described more than 700 Ghost-powered websites hijacked to deliver ClickFix lures. That figure refers to the websites in that reported campaign, not to all affected sites or victims. Malwarebytes’ campaign report discusses the fake verification prompts and recommends current anti-malware protection.
