Decentralized Perpetual Futures Exchanges Compared: Custody, Fees, Leverage, and Risks

Decentralized perpetual exchanges use different execution and risk models. Compare custody, total trading costs, leverage, liquidation rules, and dependencies before choosing a venue.

There is no single “decentralized futures exchange” model—and no evidence here for a universal winner. GMX describes oracle-priced orders routed against liquidity pools; legacy dYdX v3 documentation describes a centralized order book with non-custodial settlement; Hyperliquid’s documentation specifies asset-dependent leverage and USDC margin for USDT-denominated linear contracts. To compare them fairly, look beyond the DEX label: assess custody and execution, total costs for your order and holding period, market-specific margin rules, liquidation mechanics, and the technical systems each venue depends on.

What does “decentralized” mean for a perpetual futures trader?

It does not, by itself, tell you who holds collateral, how orders are matched, how prices are determined, or where trades settle. Those details vary by venue and, in some cases, by version. A venue can use non-custodial settlement while relying on an order book, or route orders against liquidity pools using oracle prices. Those designs create different execution and operational risks.

Perpetual contracts have no fixed expiry. Instead, funding payments can transfer value between long and short positions to help keep contract prices near a reference price. That ongoing transfer is distinct from a trading commission, and it can add to or subtract from a position’s result.

How do GMX, dYdX, and Hyperliquid differ?

Venue and source scope Execution and pricing Leverage or margin details Costs and liquidation details
GMX
Official docs accessed October 7, 2026
GMX describes orders routed against GM and GLV liquidity pools using oracle index prices. Its documentation says orders do not passively fill like resting limit orders on a centralized exchange. GMX’s introduction states up to 100x leverage for supported markets. This is a stated maximum, not a general setting or recommendation. Costs include trading fees, price impact, funding or borrowing charges where applicable, and network execution fees. Documented liquidation fees vary by market type; see “How does liquidation work?” below.
dYdX Chain
Help articles published April 23, 2026
The cited help articles describe Chain-specific funding and liquidation rules. The supplied Chain sources do not establish an execution architecture comparable to the legacy v3 description. Initial and maintenance margin figures vary by market tier. The cited help articles do not establish one universal leverage maximum. Trading uses maker-taker fees tied to trailing 30-day perpetual volume. The default Chain liquidation help describes oracle valuation and a maximum penalty that governance may adjust.
dYdX v3
Legacy technical documentation
The v3 documentation describes a centralized order book alongside non-custodial settlement of trades and liquidations. This is a version-specific description, not a blanket statement about current dYdX systems. Leverage limits depend on market-specific initial and maintenance margin parameters. A comparable current v3 fee or liquidation figure is not stated in the cited v3 documentation.
Hyperliquid
Official docs accessed October 7, 2026
The supplied contract specifications describe USDT-denominated linear contracts with USDC margin and PnL denominated in USDC, without conversion using the USDC/USDT exchange rate. Maximum leverage ranges from 3x to 40x by asset. At maximum leverage, maintenance margin is half the initial margin. A comparable fee schedule or liquidation figure is not stated in the cited Hyperliquid pages.

The venue figures describe different mechanisms and source scopes; they are not a like-for-like performance ranking. For example, a maximum leverage figure says nothing about execution cost, and a liquidation penalty is not a trading fee.

What should you compare about custody and execution?

Where collateral and settlement sit

Check how a venue describes collateral custody, settlement, and the role of its smart contracts or other infrastructure. The available dYdX v3 technical documentation calls that version non-custodial while also describing a centralized order book. Do not apply that v3 description to dYdX Chain or treat it as a claim about every current version.

How orders are priced and filled

GMX’s documented model routes orders against GM and GLV liquidity pools and uses oracle index prices. Its documentation warns that orders do not passively fill in the way resting centralized-exchange limit orders do. Consider how the venue’s order behavior, pool liquidity, price impact, and oracle inputs fit the order you intend to place; the DEX label alone does not predict a fill price.

What systems must keep working

Execution can depend on smart contracts, oracle inputs, available liquidity, network processing, and—depending on the venue’s design—order-book or validator infrastructure. A failure or disruption in any relevant component can affect pricing, order execution, or access to collateral. GMX’s own documentation states: “GMX mitigates risks through testing, audits, and bug bounties, but trading on any smart contract protocol carries inherent risks.”

How do you compare the real cost of a trade?

Estimate costs for a defined market, order size, execution type, account tier, network, and holding period. A headline trading fee alone cannot establish which position will cost less.

  • Simple & Secure Interface: Manage your digital assets easily with a clear OLED screen for secure on-device confirmations

  • Effortless Asset Management: Monitor and transact seamlessly with Trezor Suite, our intuitive desktop and mobile app
  • Enhanced Backup Solution: Multi-share Backup eliminates single points of failure for secure cold wallet recovery
  • Trading commission: Identify maker versus taker treatment and any volume-based tier. dYdX’s April 23, 2026 fee article says default taker fees depend on trailing 30-day USD volume across perpetual order books and that settings may be adjusted through governance; it does not give one universal current fee tier in the cited text.
  • Price impact or spread: A quoted commission does not include the effect of execution against available liquidity. GMX documents price impact and says its risk team can update per-market price-impact caps.
  • Funding and borrowing: Funding is an ongoing long-short transfer, not a one-time commission. GMX lists funding or borrowing charges where applicable. dYdX’s default funding documentation describes rates based on sampled premiums and hourly settlement; actual payments vary with market conditions and settings.
  • Network execution: Include the cost of the transaction on the relevant chain. GMX’s fee documentation includes network fees, so an otherwise similar trade can have a different total cost depending on execution conditions.

To compare two venues, use the same direction, market exposure, order size, maker/taker assumption, holding period, and collateral assumptions. Include expected funding over that period and execution costs, then check the live quote and current fee documentation; the sources cited here do not provide a common all-in fee figure.

How should you interpret leverage and margin?

Maximum leverage is a market-specific ceiling, not a target or measure of safety. More leverage means less collateral relative to exposure, so a smaller adverse price move can consume the margin supporting a position and bring liquidation closer. Actual thresholds depend on the market’s initial and maintenance margin rules and the venue’s configuration.

Hyperliquid’s cited perpetual-asset documentation gives asset-dependent maximum leverage from 3x to 40x, with maintenance margin equal to half the initial margin at maximum leverage. GMX’s introduction states up to 100x for supported markets. These values are not comparable recommendations: they do not establish the same markets, margin treatment, collateral, or liquidation behavior.

Collateral denomination also matters. Hyperliquid’s cited contract specifications say USDT-denominated linear contracts use USDC margin and denominate PnL in USDC without converting by the USDC/USDT exchange rate. That means contract denomination and collateral accounting should be checked for the specific asset rather than assumed to be interchangeable.

How does liquidation work, and how can you reduce the risk?

Liquidation rules determine when a position no longer meets its maintenance requirement and how it is closed or penalized. The trigger price, reference price, fee, and execution process differ by venue and market; do not infer one venue’s behavior from another’s.

Venue-specific rules in the cited documentation

  • GMX: The documentation lists liquidation fees of 0.20% of position size for standard markets, 0.30% for single-token and synthetic markets, and 0.45% for high-volatility newly listed markets. It says the fee is deducted when a position is closed and is not part of the liquidatability check. Market configuration matters, and borrow and funding fees can move liquidation prices closer.
  • dYdX Chain: The April 23, 2026 help article says accounts below maintenance margin can be liquidated and describes oracle price use in default settings. It gives a maximum liquidation penalty of 1.5% in default v4 software, subject to governance adjustment.
  • Hyperliquid: The cited pages establish asset-dependent leverage and margin details, but a comparable liquidation fee or complete liquidation process is not stated there.

Practical steps to avoid liquidation

  1. Read the market’s current rules. In the venue interface and current documentation, locate the market’s initial and maintenance margin requirements, collateral rules, and liquidation method before opening the position.
  2. Use less exposure relative to collateral. Do not treat the venue’s maximum leverage as a suitable setting. Leave room for adverse price moves and for costs that accrue while the position is open.
  3. Account for ongoing charges. Funding and, where applicable, borrowing costs can change the position’s margin situation over time. Check current rates and how often they settle.
  4. Monitor the position and its margin buffer. Reassess it when the market moves, costs accrue, or venue parameters change; a displayed liquidation estimate depends on the venue’s rules and inputs.

What risks remain even when a venue has safeguards?

Audits, testing, and bug-bounty programs do not eliminate the possibility of smart-contract vulnerabilities. Oracle inputs can affect reference prices; pool liquidity and order execution can affect fills; governance can change parameters; and network conditions can affect transaction execution. Collateral denomination adds another exposure to understand, as Hyperliquid’s USDC-margin specifications illustrate for USDT-denominated linear contracts.

Before trading, verify the exact venue and version, market, collateral asset, fee schedule, margin settings, funding method, and liquidation rules in their live interface and current documentation. These parameters can change, and the cited figures should not be treated as live quotes.

Which venue is the right comparison for you?

Choose by the position you plan to trade, not by a single headline maximum. If pool-based oracle-priced execution is central to your decision, examine GMX’s market liquidity, price impact, fees, and network costs. If you are considering dYdX, distinguish Chain help-page rules from legacy v3 architecture and confirm the current fee and margin settings for the relevant market. If you are considering Hyperliquid, check the specific asset’s leverage and how its contract denomination and USDC margin fit your collateral needs. A sound comparison holds the trade assumptions constant and weighs operational control and technical dependencies alongside cost and liquidation risk.
