1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRAM gives your computer temporary working space for active tasks; an SSD stores Windows, apps, and files after shutdown. More RAM can help when your usual workload runs short of memory. An SSD can add storage capacity and may improve storage-related responsiveness, especially when replacing an older hard drive. The right upgrade depends on what is actually slowing the computer.
What RAM and an SSD do
RAM is temporary working memory
Applications use RAM for data and instructions they need while running. RAM is cleared when the computer shuts down. Microsoft notes that “RAM is faster than disks at reading and writing information” in its computer memory guide. Having enough memory for the work you do can help the computer handle active applications without memory-related slowdowns.

An SSD is persistent storage
An SSD keeps Windows, applications, and files when the computer is off. Replacing a hard drive with a compatible SSD may improve storage-related access, and a larger drive can provide more room for files, apps, and updates. An SSD does not replace RAM: it does not provide the same temporary working space for active tasks.

| What you notice | First option to investigate | What it may address | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slowdowns with many apps, browser tabs, or demanding projects open, while memory use stays high | RAM | More working capacity for simultaneous active tasks | Confirm the computer supports an upgrade; CPU, GPU, software, or background processes may also be limiting performance. |
| You are running out of room for files, apps, or updates | Storage cleanup or a larger SSD | More persistent storage space | Cleaning up or moving files may solve the immediate problem without replacing the drive. |
| The computer boots and opens apps slowly from an older hard drive | A compatible SSD replacement | Potentially better storage-related access than the older hard drive | The improvement depends on the computer and workload; no universal speed increase can be promised. |
| Disk activity is high, but the drive has plenty of free space | Diagnose the activity first | Task Manager can help identify processes using the disk | High disk activity alone does not establish that buying an SSD will fix the cause. |
| The computer feels sluggish without a clear memory or storage symptom | Check CPU, memory, disk, software, and startup activity | Can help narrow down other possible bottlenecks | Neither upgrade is a universal remedy for unspecified slowness. |
Check the bottleneck in Windows before buying
- Open Task Manager: press Ctrl+Shift+Esc. Reproduce the slowdown and observe CPU, memory, and disk use. Microsoft recommends monitoring these resources to identify processes that may be slowing the PC; a high reading is a clue to investigate, not a diagnosis on its own.
- Review storage: open Settings > System > Storage to check available space and storage use. Windows settings can also show the disk type and capacity.
- Match the symptom to the next step: if memory use remains high during your normal workload, investigate adding compatible RAM. If the drive is nearly full, consider Windows cleanup tools such as Storage Sense or move files before replacing the drive. If the system uses an older hard drive, check whether it supports a suitable SSD.
Check compatibility for your exact computer
Upgrade support varies by model. Before purchasing, check the computer manufacturer’s specifications for supported RAM generation, capacity, and form factor, and for the SSD’s physical format and protocol. An NVMe drive will not work in a slot that supports only SATA; the connector or physical fit alone does not guarantee protocol compatibility. A compatibility selector can help identify possible parts, but confirm the result against the specifications for your exact model.
#1 Best Overall
- Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
- G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
- Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
- Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
What an upgrade can—and cannot—promise
Neither RAM nor SSD storage is automatically the right fix for a slow computer. More RAM is most relevant when active work is constrained by available memory; SSD capacity is relevant when you need persistent space, and an SSD replacement may help when storage access from an older hard drive is the issue. Performance also depends on the workload, other hardware, and software. There is no general percentage speed gain that applies to every computer and upgrade.
