How Android Quarterly Platform Releases Differ From Feature Drops and Major Updates

Android QPRs extend an existing version; Pixel Feature Drops are Google’s Pixel-facing delivery framing, while major updates establish a new Android baseline.

An Android Quarterly Platform Release (QPR) is a follow-up to a numbered Android release; a Pixel Feature Drop is Google’s Pixel-facing way of delivering and presenting features associated with QPR updates. A major Android update establishes the version baseline, while QPRs continue its development. These terms are related, but they are not interchangeable—and Pixel Feature Drop is not a universal label for updates from every Android manufacturer.

What is an Android QPR?

QPR stands for Quarterly Platform Release. It is a follow-up release built on an existing major Android version, typically bringing fixes and refinements rather than establishing a new numbered version. Google’s Android release notes describe QPRs as being delivered to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and to Pixel devices as part of Feature Drops.

A major Android update is the initial release of a numbered version. It establishes that version’s platform baseline; later QPRs build on it. The exact contents, availability and release stage depend on the specific update.

How QPRs, Pixel Feature Drops and major updates compare

Update type Role and timing Typical focus API and app impact Distribution and scope
Major Android update Initial release of a numbered Android version. Establishes the platform baseline for that version. Check the version’s own API and behavior notes. Availability depends on the release and device. Do not assume all Android manufacturers use the same rollout schedule.
Quarterly Platform Release (QPR) Follow-up release for an existing Android version, generally on a quarterly cadence. Continues the version with fixes and refinements. Google generally describes QPRs as not including app-impacting API changes, but check the exact release’s API diff and notes. Google says QPRs are delivered to AOSP and Pixel devices as part of Feature Drops. Check the specific release’s device list and rollout status.
Pixel Feature Drop Google’s Pixel-facing delivery and feature framing associated with QPR releases in the cited Android notes. Features made available for eligible Pixel devices; the list is release-specific. Check the associated Android release notes for API details. Pixel-specific branding. It does not describe every manufacturer’s Android updates.
QPR beta Pre-release build for a QPR, not a stable release. Lets users test the upcoming quarterly build. Check the beta’s API details and compatibility implications. Google’s Android 15 notes distinguish QPR builds from previews or betas for an unreleased major Android version, and describe QPR builds as suitable for general use while advising users to review known issues.

Does a QPR leave Android APIs unchanged?

Not as an absolute rule. Google’s general description says QPRs do not include app-impacting API changes, but a release’s specific API details should take precedence over that general characterization. For example, Android 16 QPR3 beta notes list an API diff of API 36.1. That is a beta-specific example, not evidence that every QPR changes APIs—or that every QPR leaves them untouched.

Why the beta label matters

A QPR beta is a pre-release build for a quarterly update. It is a different category from a preview or beta for an unreleased major Android version. Google’s Android 15 notes describe QPR builds as suitable for general use, but beta software can still have known issues; review those issues and consider whether you rely on the device for essential tasks before installing.

Milestones and dates need similar care. Android 17 QPR1 notes say the release reached Platform Stability at Beta 6, meaning its API surface was locked at that beta milestone; that does not establish a final public release. Android 17 QPR2 notes describe a minor SDK release with no planned behavior changes. Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 is dated October 2, 2026 in its release notes; a beta entry alone does not establish final availability.

What to check before installing or planning for an update

  • Exact version and release: Identify the numbered Android version and QPR number rather than relying on a broad label such as “Android update.”
  • Release stage: Confirm whether the build is stable, beta or another pre-release stage, and read the associated known-issues list.
  • API details: If app compatibility matters, inspect the API diff and behavior notes for that specific release.
  • Eligible devices: Use the release’s device list; a Pixel Feature Drop does not imply that other Android phones receive the same build or features.
  • Rollout status: Check whether the update is available for the device and region in question. A release note or beta announcement does not by itself prove stable availability.
