The IAF’s Rafale, Tejas and Su-30MKI are not interchangeable entries in a simple “best fighter” ranking. Official Indian Ministry of Defence descriptions emphasize Rafale’s omni-role and long-range reach, Tejas’s air-defence, maritime-reconnaissance and strike roles, and Su-30MKI’s documented integration with the air-launched BrahMos missile. These role descriptions show how the aircraft complement one another; they do not amount to a like-for-like performance comparison.
How their stated roles differ
The Ministry of Defence’s descriptions provide a useful comparison of mission emphasis, but not a matched set of performance specifications. “Multirole” does not mean that aircraft have identical roles, weapons, configurations or support requirements.

| Aircraft | Official role framing | Documented example or context |
|---|---|---|
| Rafale | Described by the Ministry of Defence as an “omni-role” fighter, with the ability to engage targets at long range and in depth. | The official framing highlights long-range strike alongside air-dominance ambitions. A 2026 approval for additional Rafales is an acquisition-process milestone, not evidence that those aircraft have been contracted or delivered. |
| Tejas | Designed for air defence, maritime reconnaissance and strike. The Mk-1 FOC induction release describes it as a single-engine, lightweight, all-weather multirole aircraft and notes air-to-air refuelling capability. | Its light-combat-aircraft category and stated mission set are useful context, but “light” alone does not establish a limitation on a particular mission. |
| Su-30MKI | The Ministry of Defence documents its integration with the air-launched BrahMos missile. | An official account records a BrahMos test against a sea target, demonstrating a documented maritime-strike application. |
Rafale: an omni-role fighter with long-range reach
In its 2019 year-end review, the Ministry of Defence called Rafale an “omni-role fighter aircraft” and said it would provide “long range capability to engage targets in depth.” That is the clearest official role framing in the sources available here: a multirole aircraft whose stated emphasis includes reaching targets at distance.

In February 2026, the Defence Acquisition Council approved an Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for additional IAF multi-role fighter aircraft (MRFA), identified in the release as Rafale. The Ministry said the proposal was intended to enhance air-dominance roles and long-range offensive strikes. An AoN is an approval stage; it does not establish that a contract has been signed, that aircraft have been delivered, or that they have entered IAF service.

Tejas: air defence, maritime reconnaissance and strike
The Ministry of Defence states that Tejas was designed for three roles: “Air Defence, Maritime Reconnaissance and Strike.” Its 2020 release on the Tejas Mk-1 Full Operational Capability (FOC) aircraft also described the type as a single-engine, lightweight, all-weather multirole fighter and noted its air-to-air refuelling capability.
Those details place Tejas in the light-combat-aircraft category while making clear that its official mission description spans more than air-to-air defence. The available role statements do not establish that “light” means unsuitable for a particular mission; determining that would require a specific aircraft variant, configuration and mission comparison.

Su-30MKI: a documented BrahMos strike role
The Su-30MKI comparison has a concrete weapons-integration example: the Ministry of Defence’s 2019 review documented integration of the air-launched BrahMos missile and a test against a sea target. This establishes a demonstrated maritime-strike dimension, rather than a complete description of every Su-30MKI mission or capability.

The same 2019 review said 272 Su-30MKI aircraft had been contracted under various contracts. That is a historical contract figure, not a current count of aircraft in service. Likewise, the Ministry’s 2017 review recorded an India-France agreement signed on 23 September 2016 covering 36 Rafale aircraft; that agreement quantity is not a current Rafale inventory figure.

What a fair comparison can—and cannot—establish
The official material supports comparing stated mission sets, aircraft category and documented strike examples. It does not provide a complete, matched comparison of payload, range, sensors, radar, electronic warfare systems or weapons across specific variants. Nor does it establish a common head-to-head test or a single overall winner.
A meaningful performance comparison would need to specify the exact aircraft variant and configuration, weapons, mission, support network and comparison date. Without those conditions, ranking the three aircraft risks treating different roles and evidence as though they were directly comparable.
