What matters most for night driving?
Night footage has to handle bright headlights and reflective signs alongside dark roadsides. A camera’s resolution alone cannot tell you how well it will manage that contrast or capture detail in dim light. Sony identifies HDR, sensitivity and resolution as key dash-cam imaging attributes; its guidance explains that larger pixels can receive more light, though the result depends on the sensor and the camera’s implementation. Sony’s dash-cam imaging guidance is a useful technical overview.

Look beyond the “night vision” label
When available, watch sample footage recorded in lighting similar to your usual routes. Look at how well the scene retains detail in both lit and unlit areas, and whether moving objects remain clear. No resolution or marketing label guarantees that a licence plate will be readable in every situation.
Understand what HDR can—and cannot—tell you
HDR is intended to represent bright and dark areas in the same scene. Implementations differ: Sony explains that its DOL HDR combines successive bright and dark exposures, and that the time gap between them can create artifacts on fast-moving targets. Its Clear HDR explanation describes capturing bright and dark information in one shot to reduce those motion artifacts. These are descriptions of Sony sensor functions, not a guarantee that every dash cam uses either method or will capture moving plates clearly.

What should a dash cam capture at roadworks?
Start with a forward-facing camera that records the road ahead. At temporary lane shifts, queues and changing traffic patterns, useful footage should show the vehicle’s approach and the road scene around it. VIOFO’s buying guide also identifies roadworks as a situation a front camera can capture; this is vendor guidance, not independent comparative testing.
Balance field of view against edge distortion
A wider field of view can include more of a junction or adjacent lanes, but very wide views may distort objects near the edges. Compare sample footage and consider whether the camera shows the context you need without making important details difficult to judge. A rear camera adds coverage behind the vehicle and may be useful if you also want to document following traffic or rear impacts. There is no established universally best channel count for roadworks.

- 💖💖【Important Note】Due to soaring memory chip costs, many brands have eliminated memory cards entirely, requiring a separate purchase. However, to save you the hassle of buying extra accessories, we are resisting cost pressures without raising our dashcam's price. Starting June 26, 2026, this camera will include a 32GB memory card (previously 64GB) so you can still use it out of the box. For extended storage, we highly recommend purchasing a Class 10, U3, and V30 (or higher) memory card.

Resolution helps, but does not settle the choice
More pixels can preserve more image information, but low-light conditions, movement, the lens and image processing also affect the result. Treat resolution as one comparison point alongside sensor performance, HDR behavior, field of view and footage quality—not as a substitute for them. Halfords’ UK buyer’s guide covers common dash-cam features, including resolution and viewing angle.
How should you compare dash cams?
| Decision | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Night image quality | Low-light sensor performance, HDR behavior and sample footage | These help you judge how the camera handles dim scenes, glare and moving detail. |
| Image detail | Resolution and the quality of recorded footage | More pixels can preserve information, but do not guarantee usable night footage. |
| Roadworks coverage | Field of view and whether you need front-only or front-and-rear coverage | A forward camera records the road ahead; a rear camera adds context behind the vehicle. Very wide views may distort image edges. |
| Recording reliability | Supported microSD type and capacity, whether a card is included, and loop recording | Compatibility and card inclusion vary by model; loop recording typically replaces older clips when storage fills. |
| Parking protection | Parking-mode support, power method and voltage cutoff behavior | Parking use may require power while the engine is off and a compatible setup. |
What storage and power setup do you need?
Check the memory-card requirements
Many dash cams save footage to a microSD card and use loop recording to replace older clips when the card fills. Some include a card; others require a separate purchase. Check the chosen camera’s supported card type and capacity, and follow its instructions for card maintenance. Halfords’ UK guide describes these common storage arrangements.

- UPSCALED 4K FRONT + 1080P REAR DUAL DASH CAM: The ROVE R2-4K DUAL records the road ahead and behind at the same time. This is upscaled 4K, not native 4K, engineered to show sharper everyday detail than standard 1080P dash cams, so you can read license plates, signs, and surroundings in front and rear footage.
- SONY STARVIS 2 IMX675 SENSOR + SUPER NIGHT VISION: The front camera uses a Sony STARVIS 2 IMX675 5MP image sensor with a wide F1.5 aperture (F1.8 rear) and HDR to pull in more light for clearer low-light footage. This advanced sensor enhances nighttime clarity, helping capture license plates, road signs, and surrounding vehicles with greater reliability when driving after dark, through tunnels, or in dusk and dawn conditions.

- FEATURES WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY INCLUDED: Experience peace of mind with this front and rear car dash cam. It comes with a free 128GB microSD card and offers advanced features such as an f1.5 aperture, motion detection, G-sensor, seamless loop recording, emergency video lock, screen saver, live speed and compass direction, voice guidance, ring of threads for optional CPL filter, a built-in supercapacitor for extended product life, support for up to 1TB microSD cards, and many more.
Treat parking mode as a separate requirement
For recording while driving, a supplied power connection or 12V connection may be sufficient, depending on the camera. Parking mode is different: the camera may need power after the engine is off. Before buying a hardwire kit, check that it is compatible with both the camera and vehicle, and whether it provides voltage cutoff to help protect the vehicle battery.
For a model-specific example, COMTEC lists an optional direct-wiring accessory for its Japan-market ZDR055 that supports parking monitoring and voltage monitoring. That accessory is not a general recommendation and its compatibility should not be assumed for other cameras. See the COMTEC ZDR055 specifications.
