Use a question in an email subject when it captures a real recipient concern and the message answers or develops it. Mailchimp and HubSpot both offer ways to test subject-line variations, but neither platform’s documentation shows that question-based lines outperform statements. To find out what works for your audience, test a relevant question against a clear statement using the same offer, email content, and audience.
Do question email subject lines get more opens?
There is no established universal advantage for question-based marketing email subjects. A question can create curiosity, but it can also be vague or feel like a gimmick when the email does not deliver on it. The stronger choice is the line that accurately signals why the recipient should care.

The available studies offer context, not a direct answer for campaign lists. A 2026 study on article titles and news headlines reported reduced engagement for question-framed titles in several contexts (Stanford Graduate School of Business; Journal of Consumer Psychology). A 2020 study of invitations to web surveys found a preference for informative, straightforward subject lines (ERIC). Neither establishes how question subjects perform in marketing emails across brands, audiences, or platforms.
Mailchimp vs. HubSpot for question-based subjects
Both services can support a test of a question against a statement. Their documented differences are in writing-time guidance, personalization, testing access, and how a test informs the sender—not in any proven ability to make questions more engaging.
#1 Best Overall
| What matters | Mailchimp | HubSpot |
|---|---|---|
| Writing-time guidance | Subject Line Helper checks word count, character count, punctuation, and emoji use. Mailchimp says it is free with every account. Its general suggestions draw on platform-wide email data. (Mailchimp) | The cited subject-line documentation covers personalization tokens and emojis; it does not describe a comparable dedicated subject-line helper. (HubSpot) |
| Personalization and fallback | The cited guidance discusses audience relevance and careful emoji use; it does not establish a matching token fallback control. (Mailchimp) | Supports personalization tokens in marketing email subject lines and lets the sender set a fallback value for an empty property. HubSpot says this is available across products and plans. (HubSpot) |
| Audience-specific A/B testing | Mailchimp documents A/B and multivariate tests that can show what specific contacts prefer. Its documentation contrasts these with helper tips based on emails sent by all Mailchimp users. (Mailchimp) | Regular marketing email A/B tests are documented for Marketing Hub Professional and Enterprise. (HubSpot) |
| Test-size guidance | The cited A/B-test source does not state a comparable minimum contact recommendation. | HubSpot recommends at least 1,000 contacts for best results. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee or a universal threshold. The cited page was last updated April 13, 2026. (HubSpot) |
What Mailchimp’s subject-line guidance means in practice
Mailchimp recommends keeping subject lines to no more than 9 words and 60 characters, limiting punctuation, and using emojis carefully. These are vendor recommendations, not hard deliverability rules or proven engagement thresholds. Treat them as starting points, then assess the line with your audience and the way it appears in the inbox. (Mailchimp Best Practices for Email Subject Lines)
The helper can flag length and formatting considerations while you draft. Its suggestions and an audience-specific test serve different purposes: the helper draws on platform-wide email data, whereas a test can compare variations with your own contacts. Mailchimp puts the distinction this way: “Unlike the subject line helper, which uses data from emails sent by all Mailchimp users, A/B and Multivariate tests can tell you what your specific contacts like best.” (Mailchimp)

How to write and test a question subject line
- Start with the recipient’s reason to care. Identify the offer, information, or problem the email actually addresses before writing the subject. Make the question specific enough to reflect that reason.
- Make sure the email delivers. A question should be answered or meaningfully developed in the message. Avoid implying a benefit or issue the email does not cover.
- Write a statement alternative with the same promise. For example, if the email explains how to reduce cart abandonment, compare “Could fewer abandoned carts lift sales?” with “Three ways to reduce abandoned carts.” Keep the underlying offer or benefit consistent.
- Change one variable at a time. Keep the email body and audience comparable while varying the subject format. If you change the offer, audience, and subject together, you cannot confidently attribute a difference to the question phrasing.
- Check the inbox presentation. Review the subject with its preview text and, if using personalization, confirm that the fallback value reads naturally when a contact property is empty. HubSpot documents fallback values for empty properties; this check helps prevent blank or awkward personalization. (HubSpot)
- Choose a metric that matches the campaign goal. Opens can help compare initial attention, but an open-rate result alone does not establish that a version earned more clicks, replies, conversions, or revenue.
Which platform should you use?
Choose Mailchimp when its drafting helper is useful
Mailchimp documents a dedicated helper for checking subject-line length and formatting, along with tests intended to reveal preferences among your contacts. Its suggested length and punctuation guidance can help with a first draft, but a test—not a general recommendation—can compare alternatives for your audience. (Subject Line Helper; About A/B Tests)

Choose HubSpot when personalization and eligible-tier testing fit your workflow
HubSpot documents subject-line personalization with fallback values across products and plans. Its regular marketing email A/B testing is documented for Marketing Hub Professional and Enterprise, so confirm that your account is eligible before building a test. The evidence does not show that either platform writes better question subjects or produces higher opens. Select based on the writing, personalization, and testing features your team needs, then let a well-controlled test—not the punctuation—guide the decision.
