Its 70mm aperture and 700mm focal length make it a modest, straightforward starter scope—not a computerized telescope, and not a source of the bright, colorful deep-sky views often shown in books. The specifications and performance expectations below come from Orion’s manual and a retailer listing; they are not independent hands-on test results.

| Orion Observer II, model 10275 | High Point Scientific lists a 70mm aperture, 700mm focal length, f/10, manual alt-azimuth mount, 1.25-inch rack-and-pinion focuser, and a box containing tripod assembly, mount, accessory tray, optical tube, altitude micro-motion rod, red-dot finder, mirror diagonal, 25mm and 10mm Kellner eyepieces, screwdriver, and dust cover. The listing also mentions an Orion MoonMap 260. High Point Scientific product listing. | 7.4 lb on the listing. It showed sold out with no ETA when accessed in 2026; check the seller’s current page for stock and package details. |
The retailer’s product page says the 70mm lens takes in “36% more light than a 60mm lens.” That is the retailer’s claim, not an independently measured result.
What can the Observer 70 show?
Orion’s manual presents the scope for lunar and planetary observing, star clusters, nebulae, and terrestrial viewing. It names Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn as bright planetary targets, and says the telescope can show them in some detail. The manual also cautions that most deep-sky objects look like faint gray smudges to the eye, rather than the vivid photographs reproduced in books and magazines. These are manufacturer descriptions, not findings from an independent current test.
#1 Best Overall
- Applicable Model:For Orion Observer 70mm AZ 2018–2024.
- Materials:Made from durable high-quality materials to help protect your telescope during outdoor storage.
- Protection:Helps reduce sun exposure that may cause fading cracking or premature aging of telescope components.
- Fixing Strap:Strap adjustable drawstring clean closing and prevents wind entering from bottom.
- After-sales service:Should you encounter any issues with this product, I will reply to you within 24 hours.
For locating faint targets, the manual recommends allowing your eyes to adapt to darkness and using a star chart or planisphere. A chart is particularly helpful with a manual scope: there is no computer to identify or automatically find objects.
Magnification: supplied eyepieces and realistic limits
The 25mm and 10mm eyepieces specified for model #9881 provide 28x and 70x. Orion’s manual gives approximately 2x per millimeter of aperture—140x for a 70mm telescope—as a general useful-magnification rule of thumb. It is not a promise of sharp, pleasing views at 140x: atmospheric conditions, target brightness, and the scope’s optics all affect what remains useful. The Observer II listing also states 140x as its highest useful magnification.

- 【COMPATIBLE TELESCOPE MODELS】Compatible with Orion Observer II 70mm, the cover provides generous room for compatible telescope tubes, mounts and tripod assemblies. Telescope dimensions and setup positions may vary by model or configuration; please verify your telescope model and measure the complete assembled setup before ordering.
- 【FULL COVERAGE】The extended one-piece shape drapes over the optical tube, finder area, mount and tripod section to create a protective outer barrier around the assembled setup. It helps keep exposed adjustment parts and equipment surfaces away from dust, pollen, leaves, light rain, dew and everyday debris between viewing sessions.
- 【High-quality materials】 Instead of using an ordinary dark storage fabric, this cover combines durable 420D Oxford construction with a bright silver reflective exterior. The tough woven shell handles repeated covering and removal, while the reflective-facing surface helps reduce direct solar heat absorption when equipment is temporarily positioned outside.
- 【MADE FOR OBSERVING NIGHTS AND STORAGE DAYS】Use it outside between stargazing or astrophotography sessions, on a sheltered patio, beneath an observatory roof, or while equipment waits for the next clear night. Indoors, it provides an extra layer of protection in garages, storage rooms and home astronomy spaces where settling dust and accidental contact can still reach exposed equipment.
- 【COVER REMOVE FOLD AND GO】No need to completely break down the telescope every time protection is needed. Simply lower the cover over the assembled setup, adjust it around the tripod, then remove it when observation begins. The flexible fabric folds down compactly afterward, making it easy to keep nearby with other astronomy gear.
The telescope accepts standard 1.25-inch eyepieces, but the two included eyepieces already provide low and moderate powers. An additional eyepiece is optional, not a prerequisite for getting started.
How the mount works
The altazimuth mount moves the tube up and down (altitude) and left and right (azimuth), making basic pointing intuitive. The manual describes a fine-adjustment rod for small altitude movements; for larger altitude changes, loosen the lock and reposition the tube by hand. The mount is manual rather than computerized, so finding objects and keeping them in view requires your own adjustments.

Using it for daytime, terrestrial viewing
The manual says the telescope can be used to view land. Its supplied 90-degree mirror diagonal is intended for astronomical viewing; for terrestrial use, Orion recommends an optional 45-degree correct-image prism diagonal instead. Confirm that any replacement diagonal is 1.25-inch and compatible with the specific telescope before buying. Orion also recommends staying below 80x for daytime viewing because heat waves over sun-warmed ground can soften the image at higher magnifications.
Setup, care, and essential safety
Orion’s manual estimates first assembly at about 30 minutes and calls for Phillips- and flat-head screwdrivers. For storage, it recommends keeping the telescope clean and dry with the dust cover in place. To clean optics, first remove loose dust with a blower bulb or compressed air, then use optical lens tissue and fluid intended for multi-coated optics. The manual warns against ordinary glass cleaner and eyeglass-cleaning fluid.

Never look directly at the Sun through your telescope or its finder scope—even for an instant—without a professionally made solar filter that completely covers the front of the instrument, or permanent eye damage could result. This warning is from Orion’s instruction manual. A filter that does not cover the telescope’s front aperture is not a safe substitute.
Who should consider it?
The Observer 70’s documented design is a fit for a beginner who wants a simple manual instrument for the Moon, bright planets, and learning to locate objects. Its 70mm aperture and manual mount set clear limits: it is not designed to deliver rich color on faint deep-sky objects or to find targets automatically. The available sources do not establish comparative image quality, mount stability, or measured sharpness against competing telescopes.
