The standard Galaxy Z Fold8 is a major change from the Galaxy Z Fold5, especially if you want a lighter phone and a different screen shape. But it is not a like-for-like successor: standard Fold8 drops the Fold5’s S Pen support and 3x telephoto camera, and Samsung says it does not support FlexMode. There is also a naming wrinkle: Samsung describes the Fold8 Ultra as the continuation of the original Galaxy Z Fold experience, while standard Fold8 takes a new form-factor direction. This comparison covers the standard Fold8 unless noted otherwise.
At a glance: what changes from Fold5 to standard Fold8?
The figures below come from Samsung’s U.S. product materials and Samsung Mobile Press. Display measurements are diagonal; visible area can vary with rounded corners and camera openings. Regional configurations may differ.

| Specification | Galaxy Z Fold5 | Galaxy Z Fold8 standard | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main display | 7.6 inches | 7.6 inches, 4:3 form | The stated diagonal is the same, but the Fold8’s proportions change the layout and feel. |
| Cover display | 6.2 inches | 5.5 inches, 10:16 form | Fold8’s cover is smaller diagonally but wider in proportion. |
| Weight | 253 g | 201 g | Fold8 is 52 g lighter by Samsung’s published figures. |
| Processor | Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy | Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy | A newer listed generation, but not proof of a particular speed gain. |
| Battery capacity | 4,400 mAh typical | 4,800 mAh | Fold8 has higher listed capacity; capacity alone does not establish longer runtime. |
| Rear cameras | 50 MP wide, 12 MP ultra-wide, 10 MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom | Dual 50 MP wide and ultra-wide; no telephoto listed | Fold5 retains a dedicated optical-zoom camera absent from standard Fold8’s listed array. |
| S Pen | Supported on the main display with a compatible pen sold separately | Not supported | Handwriting and pen markup on Fold5 are not carried over to standard Fold8. |
| FlexMode | Fold5 specifications list foldable productivity features | Samsung says FlexMode is not supported | Do not assume the familiar partially folded workflow is available on standard Fold8. |
What the lighter body and screen redesign mean
Samsung lists Fold5 at 253 g and standard Fold8 at 201 g, a 52 g reduction. Samsung Mobile Press described the Fold8’s weight as part of its new form factor and internal design. That is a concrete change for daily carry, although the published weight difference cannot predict how comfortable either phone will feel in every hand or case.

The inner screens share a stated 7.6-inch diagonal, but the Fold8’s 4:3 form changes the shape of the workspace. Apps, documents, and video may occupy the screen differently than on Fold5; the diagonal alone does not tell you whether you will prefer the layout. On the outside, the Fold8’s 5.5-inch cover is smaller than Fold5’s 6.2-inch cover, though the Fold8’s 10:16 proportions are wider. If you often type or use the phone one-handed while closed, compare the actual devices in person if possible.

Performance and battery: newer hardware, no proven runtime result
Fold8 lists a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, replacing Fold5’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy. That makes the processor a newer generation on paper, but the available comparison does not establish a controlled, matched performance result. Treat the newer chip as a specification improvement, not a promise of a specific speed increase in your apps.
Samsung lists 4,800 mAh for Fold8 and 4,400 mAh typical capacity for Fold5. The larger nominal figure does not, by itself, establish how much longer Fold8 will last in ordinary use. Screen characteristics, software, network conditions, and workload also affect battery life, and no matched Fold5-versus-Fold8 battery test is established here.

Camera trade-off: Fold5 keeps the listed telephoto lens
Fold5 has a 10 MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom alongside its 50 MP wide and 12 MP ultra-wide cameras. Standard Fold8 lists two rear cameras: 50 MP wide and 50 MP ultra-wide, with no telephoto camera listed. If you regularly frame distant subjects or prefer optical zoom, this is a meaningful reason to think carefully before switching. Samsung lists a 10 MP 3x telephoto camera on Fold8 Ultra, but that is a different model.

Fold5 supports a compatible S Pen on its main display; the pen is sold separately. Samsung explicitly states that standard Fold8 does not support S Pen. If handwritten notes, sketches, or document markup are part of your routine, the standard Fold8 does not preserve that input option.

Samsung also says Fold8 does not support FlexMode. Fold5’s specification sheet lists foldable productivity features, but that should not be treated as proof that every Fold5 feature carries forward. In particular, do not buy standard Fold8 expecting the same FlexMode use.
Which Fold8 does “Fold 8” mean?
Samsung’s U.S. product FAQ says, “Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is the latest iteration of what we previously called Galaxy Z Fold.” Samsung positions the standard Fold8 as a new form factor and the Ultra as the continuation of the original Fold experience. So if by “Fold 8” you mean the traditional book-style flagship in the established lineup, compare Fold5 with Fold8 Ultra as well as with the standard Fold8. The camera and feature differences listed above apply specifically to standard Fold8.

Should you upgrade from Fold5 to standard Fold8?
Standard Fold8 is the more compelling move if you want
- A substantially lighter device by Samsung’s published weights.
- A redesigned screen experience, including a 4:3 inner display and differently proportioned cover screen.
- A newer listed processor and greater stated battery capacity, while accepting that these specifications do not establish a specific real-world performance or runtime gain.
Think twice if you rely on
- The Fold5’s S Pen support for handwriting or markup.
- A dedicated 3x optical telephoto camera.
- FlexMode, which Samsung says standard Fold8 does not support.
- The Fold5’s larger 6.2-inch cover display; Fold8’s cover is 5.5 inches diagonally, so try the new proportions before deciding.
Samsung announced sales in select markets beginning August 7, 2026, with global expansion. Current price and trade-in value depend on country, storage, retailer, carrier, and promotion; Samsung’s launch announcement is not a current price quote.
