Sony describes QSSR as a streamlined, performance-oriented implementation designed for the base console—not the same implementation of PSSR simply added to every PS5. Support is also game-specific: a title must include the relevant technology, typically through a patch or graphics option.
QSSR vs. PSSR at a glance
| Question | QSSR | PSSR |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Quick Spectral Super Resolution | PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution |
| Console tier Sony associates it with | Standard PS5 | PS5 Pro |
| How Sony describes the implementation | A streamlined neural-network architecture and hand-tuned implementation intended to fit the base PS5. | An AI upscaling library; Sony says the upgraded PSSR revision changes both the neural network and the overall algorithm. |
| How players get it | In supported games, with availability determined by each game’s patch and options. | In PS5 Pro games that support PSSR. An optional system setting can try upgraded PSSR in games that already support PSSR. |
| Publicly stated image benefit | Sony and developers describe gains in image detail and stability. | Sony and developers describe more precise reconstruction, finer detail and improved stability in motion. |
The table reflects Sony’s and its partners’ descriptions, not a controlled head-to-head test. The cited official sources do not provide a numerical QSSR-versus-PSSR image-quality score, frame-rate gain or processing-cost comparison. Sony positions PSSR as its top tier on PS5 Pro and QSSR as the performance-oriented option for standard PS5.

What QSSR changes for standard PS5
QSSR stands for Quick Spectral Super Resolution. Sony calls it a “new performance tier of AI upscaling” and says its neural network is streamlined for standard PS5, with a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize performance on that hardware. The point is to bring Sony’s AI-guided upscaling approach to the base console while accounting for its different hardware constraints—not to claim that the two consoles run an identical upscaler.

Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch Productions, whose games were named among its first uses, likewise describe clearer fine detail and greater temporal stability. Those are Sony and developer claims; they do not establish a particular resolution increase or a visible improvement in every scene or for every player.

What PSSR does on PS5 Pro
PSSR stands for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. Sony introduced it as the PS5 Pro’s AI upscaling technology. Sony says its AI library analyzes an image frame pixel by pixel to reconstruct a higher-resolution image. In 2026, Sony announced an upgraded PSSR revision that changes both the neural network and the overall algorithm.
Sony Lead Architect Mark Cerny said in February 2026 that PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 PS5 Pro titles “to date.” That is a dated figure attributed to Sony, not a live, independently audited count. For a specific game, check its current patch notes and PS5 Pro feature description rather than assuming support from the console alone.

How game support and settings work
QSSR: game patches and graphics options
Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first QSSR titles. Sony said patches would offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. These are the first named examples, not a complete compatibility list; Sony said it would make QSSR available to PlayStation developers and expected more games to adopt it.

PSSR support is also title-specific. Sony’s March 2026 announcement described an optional PS5 Pro setting called “Enhance PSSR Image Quality.” It lets players try upgraded PSSR in games that already support PSSR; it does not add PSSR to unsupported games. Sony cautioned that results can vary and unexpected visual effects are possible.

In February 2026, Sony named Resident Evil Requiem as the first title to use an advanced PSSR revision. Its March announcement discussed adoption or support for games including Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Control, Alan Wake 2, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Nioh 3, Rise of the Ronin, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Crimson Desert, Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Cyberpunk 2077. That announcement’s rollout language and examples are dated; check the current game patch and console settings for present availability.
What the image-quality claims do—and don’t—show
Upscaling reconstructs an image from a lower-resolution rendering; it is not a promise that every game will render at native output resolution or look identical on different consoles. Sony and partner studios emphasize fine detail and steadier images, particularly where thin geometry, busy textures or movement can make details shimmer. For example, id Software’s June 2026 explanation of upgraded PSSR in DOOM: The Dark Ages describes using motion, depth, exposure and sub-pixel sampling information, and says details such as snow, chains, sparks and thin geometry hold together more consistently. That is a developer explanation for one game, not a universal benchmark for PSSR or QSSR.

No independent controlled comparison in the cited official source set establishes how much faster QSSR is, how much sharper PSSR is, or whether one produces a particular frame-rate or resolution advantage in a given title. The responsible comparison is therefore about Sony’s intended hardware tier and implementation, plus the claims Sony and developers make—not a fabricated percentage or guaranteed visual ranking for every game.

Does QSSR make a standard PS5 look like a PS5 Pro?
No such equivalence is established. QSSR brings an AI-upscaling option to supported standard-PS5 games, while PS5 Pro has PSSR and its own game-dependent enhancements. Sony explicitly positions PSSR as the “gold standard” on Pro and QSSR as a performance-oriented tier for the base console. A game’s rendering mode, patch, display and chosen settings also affect what a player sees, so the technology name alone cannot establish that two versions look or perform the same.

What Project Amethyst has to do with it
Sony connects QSSR and upgraded PSSR in its announcements to Project Amethyst, its collaboration with AMD. That connection describes a technology collaboration; it does not mean QSSR is a general AMD feature or that other AMD hardware supports Sony’s console implementation.
