For the lowest practical recording delay in FL Studio, select your interface’s native ASIO driver on Windows, lower the audio buffer until the project becomes unstable, then raise it slightly. On macOS, choose the intended Core Audio devices and start with the buffer guidance for your Mac. If the performer hears an echo, address monitoring separately from the placement of the recorded take: interface direct monitoring can remove FL Studio’s software-monitoring path, while Disk Recording latency compensation adjusts recorded placement.
What to adjust—and what each setting does
Recording latency has three distinct parts that are easy to confuse:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Buffer size affects how quickly audio passes through FL Studio’s live software path. A smaller buffer can reduce response delay, but gives the computer less processing time per audio block and can cause clicks, pops, or underruns.
- Monitoring route determines what the performer hears. Monitoring the input through FL Studio adds delay associated with the buffer and any plugin delay compensation on that input’s Mixer track. An interface’s direct monitoring feature routes the input to its outputs without that software-monitoring path.
- Recording latency compensation affects where the recorded audio is placed in the project. It does not remove delay from the performer’s live monitoring signal.
Image-Line’s Audio Settings manual recommends using the smallest buffer that does not make the buffer underrun count increase. Its setup figures are starting points, not guarantees: the stable value depends on the computer, audio device, driver and project load.

- Open the audio settings. In FL Studio, go to Options > Audio Settings, or press F10.
- Choose the right driver. If your audio interface has a manufacturer-provided native ASIO driver, select it. Image-Line ranks native ASIO ahead of ASIO4ALL v2 and FL Studio ASIO. If no native driver is available, try ASIO4ALL or FL Studio ASIO. ASIO4ALL is a generic third-party driver and may require you to select the correct inputs and outputs; see Image-Line’s ASIO4ALL setup guide. FL Studio ASIO is a compatibility option that uses the Windows audio stack and may add latency or recording jitter.
- Set a starting buffer, then tune it. Open the driver’s control panel and begin near 512 samples, the approximate starting point in Image-Line’s ASIO Audio Interface Setup guide. For recording, reduce the buffer in stages while watching FL Studio’s underrun count and listening for clicks or pops. If either appears, raise the buffer. Stop at the smallest setting that stays stable; a clean take matters more than an aggressively low number.
- Select the input and record to a Mixer track. Choose the correct interface input on an unused Mixer track, arm the recording path and enable Disk Recording > Latency compensation. Avoid recording an external input on the Master Mixer track, where other routed sounds can be included. Image-Line’s Audio Recording guide covers external recording and compensation.
- Choose one monitoring route. If your interface offers direct monitoring, use it and turn off FL Studio monitoring for that same input to prevent a delayed duplicate. If you need to monitor through FL Studio, lower the buffer only as far as playback remains stable and check whether plugin delay compensation on the input Mixer track is adding delay.
Set up low-latency recording on macOS
- Select your audio devices. In FL Studio’s Audio Settings, choose the intended Core Audio input and output device. If recording a microphone on a current macOS version, confirm FL Studio has microphone permission.
- Choose a sensible buffer starting point. For Apple Silicon, Image-Line recommends starting at 128 samples and stepping up through 192, 256, 512 and 1024 samples if the project underruns. For Intel Macs, begin in the 10–20 ms range and find the smallest stable buffer. These are setup recommendations, not promises of a particular delay or performance level.
- Set up the recording and monitoring paths. Select the input on an unused Mixer track and enable Disk Recording latency compensation when recording. If the performer hears a delayed signal, use interface direct monitoring if available and disable FL Studio monitoring of that input. Compensation can improve recorded placement, but it does not change the live monitoring delay.
Fix the common recording problems
Clicks, pops or an increasing underrun count
Raise the buffer. A lower setting leaves less time to process each audio block; if the computer or project cannot keep up, the result may be audible glitches or underruns. Try a slightly larger setting and confirm the count stops increasing before recording.

The live input sounds doubled or echoes
Check for two active monitoring routes. If you are listening through the interface’s direct-monitor feature, turn off FL Studio monitoring for that input. If you are monitoring through FL Studio, check the buffer and plugin delay compensation on the input Mixer track.
The recorded clip is out of alignment
Enable Disk Recording > Latency compensation, then review playback tracking and input delay compensation if the take remains misaligned. This addresses recorded placement, not what the performer hears while recording. On Windows, FL Studio ASIO may also cause take-to-take recording jitter.

You are recording with a USB microphone
A USB microphone can be a special case because its input and your output may be on separate devices. Image-Line’s Audio Recording guide discusses configuring a USB microphone and output device through ASIO4ALL. Actual performance and stability can vary, so check that the correct device inputs and outputs are selected and judge the result with your project.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
- Driver support: for Windows, check whether the interface provides a native ASIO driver for your operating system.
- Inputs: make sure it has the microphone or instrument inputs you need.
- Direct monitoring: check whether it is available and how you control it; this can let you monitor without FL Studio’s software path.
- Connections and outputs: confirm it can connect to the computer and drive the headphones or speakers you plan to use.
Wired monitoring headphones may be useful if you need a way to hear the recording, but the cited FL Studio documentation does not establish that a particular headphone model or specification reduces software latency.
