Use JSON Pointer when an LLM workflow needs to identify one known value in a JSON document. Use JSONPath when it needs to query data—for example, select every matching item in an array. Dot notation such as $.store.book[0].title is JSONPath shorthand, not a universal path format; the runtime’s supported syntax matters.
What is the difference?
JSON Pointer and JSONPath solve related but distinct problems. Pointer names a location in a JSON structure. JSONPath evaluates a query that may select no values, one value, or many. The IETF describes JSONPath as a companion to JSON Pointer, not a replacement for it (RFC 9535).
| Decision | JSON Pointer | Dot notation / JSONPath |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Referencing one known location | Selecting or querying values, including multiple matches |
| Typical form | /store/book/0/title |
$.store.book[0].title; RFC 9535 also defines bracket notation |
| Arrays | A token is interpreted in context: it can name an object member or an array index | Supports selectors such as indexes, wildcards, slices, and filters |
| Result | One identified value, or an application-defined failure when the target is absent | A nodelist of selected nodes; a query can return zero or multiple nodes |
| Unusual member names | Escapes literal ~ and / in tokens |
Bracket notation handles general selectors; dot shorthand can be awkward for unusual names |
| Runtime portability | Supported by JSON-related standards and tooling | Implementations may support a restricted or library-specific dialect |
For LLM state, the practical distinction is exact access versus a query over changing or repeated data. That is an interface-design recommendation derived from the standards, not a published benchmark of model behavior.
How the two syntaxes look
Given this JSON value:
{
"store": {
"book": [
{"title": "North"},
{"title": "South"}
]
}
}
JSON Pointer: name one location
The pointer /store/book/0/title identifies the first book’s title. Each slash introduces a reference token. In a token, encode a literal tilde as ~0 and a literal slash as ~1; RFC 6901 defines the escaping and evaluation rules (RFC 6901).

A numeric token does not inherently mean an array index: it may instead identify an object member with that name. Its interpretation depends on the value being traversed.
JSONPath: query for selected values
$.store.book[0].title selects the same title. RFC 9535’s canonical selector form is bracket notation: $['store']['book'][0]['title']. To select both titles, use $.store.book[*].title. A filter can select books with a price below 10, if those objects contain a price member: $.store.book[[email protected] < 10].title. JSONPath evaluates to a nodelist, so a query’s cardinality can differ from one execution to another.

Is a dot path the same as JSONPath?
Not necessarily. In RFC 9535, dot notation is shorthand within JSONPath, which begins with $. A string such as state.user.name is also commonly accepted by libraries as informal dot-path syntax, but that spelling alone does not guarantee a shared grammar or behavior. A tool might accept full JSONPath, a restricted reference path, or a library-specific format.
Bracket notation is useful when a member name contains punctuation or characters that make dot shorthand unclear. Check the exact path language and supported operators in the implementation’s documentation instead of assuming that a product’s use of the word “JSONPath” means it accepts every RFC 9535 feature.

Which should an LLM workflow use?
Choose Pointer for an exact field
If a tool call is meant to read or update one known field, define an exact-location field in the interface and use JSON Pointer when the surrounding protocol supports it. Its compact slash-token form and specific escaping rules make the intended traversal explicit.
Choose JSONPath for a genuine query
Use JSONPath when the requested operation needs a collection selection—such as retrieving all matching children or filtering records by a property. State whether the query may return zero, one, or many results, and specify what the caller should do with each case.

Keep the model’s path authority bounded
If a fixed set of named operations can meet the need, prefer those to accepting unrestricted expressions. This is a design recommendation, not a security guarantee established by the cited standards. Evaluate it against the application’s threat model and requirements.

- Declare the grammar. Document whether callers provide JSON Pointer, RFC 9535 JSONPath, a restricted subset, or a library-specific path. Include the runtime and supported version or dialect in the interface contract.
- Validate against the state schema. A syntactically valid path may still be missing, reach a value of an unexpected type, or point to a different array item after state changes.
- Define failure and cardinality behavior. Decide how the application handles a missing member, an invalid path, a null value, and a JSONPath query with zero or multiple matches. Do not leave the result ambiguous between components.
- Test edge cases. Include keys containing
/,~, spaces, dots, brackets, and numeric-looking names; also test empty arrays, missing members, nulls, and updates that reorder arrays. - Verify the actual product’s subset. AWS Step Functions documents a restricted “reference path” syntax that identifies a single node and excludes filters and several JSONPath operators. That is an AWS-specific example, not a rule for every runtime (AWS Step Functions paths).
JSON Pointer also appears in JSON Schema workflows: the official guide shows URI fragments identifying subschemas (JSON Schema: Structuring a complex schema). This is an interoperability example, not a reason to treat Pointer and JSONPath as interchangeable.
