If the consignment will not reach its destination in time, use the portal’s Extend Validity facility: the current transporter must submit the request within the permitted window, explain the reason and update the transport details. “Renew” is commonly understood, but the portal calls this an extension.
How to check an e-way bill
Open the official E-Way Bill System portal and use its search option to verify a bill’s authenticity or correctness. The official FAQ says the search requires the EWB number, EWB date, generator ID and document number. Match the returned bill details against the transport document and consignment; the FAQ does not establish that every bill detail is publicly available without login.

For the deadline, check the bill’s current portal record. The API release notes identify “Valid Upto” as a field returned for an e-way bill. Use the displayed value for that bill rather than estimating the deadline from the route alone.

When the validity clock starts
The official FAQ says validity starts when the first Part B transport entry is made: the first vehicle number for road transport or the first transport document number for rail, air or ship, whichever occurs first. Adding a later Part B entry does not restart or recalculate the clock.

Regular transport and over-dimensional cargo
Under the current FAQ, regular transport receives one day for every 200 km, or part of 200 km. For example, 310 km counts as two days. The portal identifies Notification No. 94/2020–Central Tax, dated 22 December 2020, as changing the allowance from 100 km to 200 km effective 1 January 2021; older copies showing 100 km reflect the previous rule.
For over-dimensional cargo (ODC), the FAQ specifies one day for every 20 km, or part thereof. Since the applicable allowance differs by category, confirm the category and rely on the validity shown for the bill.
When and who can extend validity
The current FAQ describes an extension option before or after expiry. API validation specifies the window as eight hours before through eight hours after the existing expiry. This is a limited submission window, not an open-ended opportunity to extend an old bill.

Steps to extend an e-way bill
- Check the bill and deadline. Verify that the EWB covers the consignment and note its displayed “Valid Upto” time.
- Open Extend Validity. The current transporter should use the portal’s Extend Validity facility when an exceptional circumstance means the consignment is not expected to reach its destination in time. Submit within the eight-hour-before to eight-hour-after window.
- Enter the reason and current movement details. Provide the EWB number, a reason with a detailed explanation, the current place and its details, approximate distance remaining to the destination, and updated Part B transport details. The system calculates the extension based on the remaining distance.
- Keep Part A accurate. Part A cannot be changed in an extension request. If Part A is incorrect, the FAQ says a submitted bill cannot be edited; it must be cancelled and generated again, subject to the applicable cancellation rules.
- Check the result. Confirm the updated validity and ensure Part B reflects the conveyance actually carrying the goods.
Reasons and special situations
The FAQ identifies exceptional circumstances such as natural calamity, law-and-order issues, transshipment delay and an accident involving the conveyance. The official reason list also includes “Others.” Select the applicable reason and explain the circumstances in detail; a reason code or example remark does not guarantee that a request will be accepted automatically.
Goods held at a warehouse
The FAQ’s warehouse guidance is to use Extend Validity, indicate that the consignment is in transit, enter the warehouse details such as PIN code and address, and request validity for the remaining distance.

Vehicle breakdown
For a breakdown, the FAQ says to select “In Movement,” provide the replacement vehicle number and the breakdown-location PIN code, then request an extension for the remaining distance.
If the e-way bill has already expired
The FAQ says goods are not supposed to be moved after the bill’s validity expires. It describes extension in exceptional circumstances, including transshipment, with the reason and Part B details updated. The permitted after-expiry option remains subject to the eight-hour window; it is not a general grace period for continuing ordinary movement.
