For a Python service-to-service API, choose gRPC with Protocol Buffers when a defined contract, generated clients, or streaming fits the work. Choose a REST-style API when the interface is naturally organized around resources and HTTP. Consider GraphQL when clients need to select and combine fields from related data. None is universally best: the right choice depends on how clients interact with the service and what the contract needs to express.
What RPC means in Python
RPC, or remote procedure call, lets a client invoke a method exposed by another service. With gRPC, a service definition specifies methods and the request and response message types; generated code provides a client stub and server-side interfaces. The call may look like a method call in Python, but it still crosses a network: latency, failures, and serialization are part of the system.

gRPC uses Protocol Buffers by default both to describe the service interface and to serialize messages. A .proto file is the contract from which the Python message classes and gRPC-specific service code are generated. These commonly appear as _pb2.py and _pb2_grpc.py modules.

How to create a basic gRPC service in Python
- Define the contract. Create a
.protofile containing the request and response message types and the service methods that use them. - Install the runtime and generator. In the project environment, install
grpciofor runtime use andgrpcio-toolsfor Python code generation. - Generate the Python modules. Run the gRPC compiler through Python with
python -m grpc_tools.protoc, supplying the input file and output options for the generated message and service modules. - Implement and register the server. Implement the generated servicer interface, then register that implementation with a gRPC server.
- Call the service from a client. Create a channel, construct the generated stub for the service, and invoke the desired method with the appropriate request message.
The official Python tutorial uses an insecure local channel in its basic example. Treat that as tutorial convenience, not as production security guidance; the basic workflow alone does not establish a production deployment or security checklist.

Which gRPC interaction pattern fits?
gRPC supports four method shapes. Choose based on whether each side sends one message or a sequence, rather than using streaming merely in the hope of a speed improvement.
- Unary: one request produces one response. This is the straightforward request-and-response shape.
- Server streaming: the client sends one request and receives a stream of responses. It fits a request that should produce a sequence of updates or records.
- Client streaming: the client sends a stream of requests and receives one response. It fits a sequence of inputs that the server handles as one interaction.
- Bidirectional streaming: both sides exchange streams. Each side can read and write independently, with order preserved within each stream.
gRPC vs REST vs GraphQL
These options describe different interface models, not a universal performance ranking. REST-style APIs commonly organize an HTTP interface around resources; exact conventions vary. GraphQL exposes a schema and query model in which clients select fields, including fields from related objects. gRPC defines service methods and typed messages in a schema.
| Decision | gRPC with Protocol Buffers | REST-style API | GraphQL |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contract shape | Service methods and typed request and response messages are defined in .proto; code can be generated for clients and servers. |
Often organized around resources and HTTP interfaces; conventions depend on the API. | A schema and query model lets a client select fields, including nested related objects. |
| Interaction | Supports unary calls and the three streaming patterns. | A natural fit when the intended contract is resource-oriented HTTP. | Queries and mutations can be served over HTTP; GET may be used for queries where supported. |
| Client control over returned data | The service method and protobuf message define the request and response shape. | Response shape is often determined by the endpoint and its parameters; implementations differ. | The client selects fields and can traverse related objects in a query. |
| Implementation considerations | Generated code and compiler tooling need to be part of the Python build workflow. | Resource-oriented HTTP conventions may suit interfaces intended for broad HTTP clients. | Plan for caching, resolver N+1 behavior, and query controls such as depth and breadth limits, pagination, and rate limiting. |
How to choose for your Python project
Choose gRPC when the contract and call pattern fit
Consider gRPC for internal or cross-service communication when a defined service contract, generated client and server code, or streaming matches the interaction. Account for the code-generation step in the project workflow, and remember that a generated stub does not make a remote call equivalent to a local function call.

A resource-oriented HTTP API is a sensible fit when clients need to work with resources through HTTP interfaces. “REST-style” here describes that broad organizational approach; it is not a claim that every such API follows a single formal set of constraints.

Choose GraphQL when clients need different data selections
GraphQL can suit applications whose clients need different combinations of fields or related objects. That flexibility comes with server-side design work: consider caching and resolver behavior, and set suitable limits and pagination so queries remain manageable.

In Python, compare Protocol Buffers message instances by their type and fields rather than assuming that identical logical messages always serialize to identical byte sequences. The serialized representation may vary with schema changes, map value ordering, build flags, or library updates, so byte-for-byte serialization is not a general-purpose equality test.
