Rain, moisture, heat, glare and temperature swings can exceed what its manual permits. For a television that will stay outside, choose an outdoor-rated model matched to shade or direct-sun exposure. A properly selected weatherproof enclosure can be an alternative for a particular indoor TV, but it does not make that set an outdoor-rated model.
Can you use an indoor TV outside?
You can place an indoor TV outside temporarily in a protected setting, but that does not mean it is designed or approved for outdoor operation. Check the exact TV manual: some manuals warn against rain, moisture, dripping or splashing. A roof or covered patio reduces exposure but cannot guarantee protection from windblown rain, humidity, heat or condensation.

For example, the safety manual for LG’s UF6700 says, “Warning – To reduce the risk of fire or electrical shock, do not expose this product to rain, moisture or other liquids.” That is guidance for that model, not a universal quote from every TV manual. Follow the manual for the set you own.
Outdoor-rated televisions are designed for the exposure conditions their manufacturers specify, with weather protection and screens intended to cope better with outdoor ambient light. Their warranties and operating limits also differ by model. Manufacturer claims are not independent comparative test results, so compare specifications and instructions rather than assuming one brand or product family is uniformly suitable.

Which type of outdoor TV suits your patio?
Start with the light that reaches the screen during viewing hours. “Outdoor TV” is not one exposure category: full shade, partial sun and direct sun call for different levels of brightness and protection. A shade-rated set is not the right choice for direct sun simply because it is marketed as an outdoor TV.

These are manufacturer-described product categories, not independent rankings. Product availability and lineups vary by region and generation; confirm the exact model on the local manufacturer page and in its manual.
How should brightness figures be compared?
Brightness can help distinguish a screen intended for shade from one designed for stronger ambient light, but figures are meaningful only with their measurement method and model. SunBrite’s comparison guide, accessed in 2026, lists the following figures. Peak brightness and sustained full-screen brightness are different measures and should not be treated as directly equivalent.

Samsung’s US support page gives a separate, model-specific warning: it says that a dark area may appear if the LCD panel surface rises above 158°F and recommends placing the TV under a roof or awning to avoid direct sun. The same support page lists 122°F as The Terrace heat-resistance figure. These figures describe Samsung’s support guidance for the cited Terrace variant; they are not universal limits for all outdoor TVs. Samsung also reports older, named Terrace models reaching peak brightness of 3,000 or 4,000 nits in a 2021 report. Those older model-specific figures are not a general specification for current Terrace models, nor directly comparable to every sustained-brightness figure.
What weather protection and temperature limits matter?
Read the exact model’s ingress-protection rating, installation instructions and operating-temperature range. An IP rating describes protection against specified ingress conditions; it is not permission to ignore the manual. Samsung describes The Terrace as IP55 on its US support page and expressly says not to submerge it. Do not interpret IP55 as submersion protection.
Temperature ranges are also model-specific. Compare the stated operating range—not a storage range—with the seasonal conditions at the installation site. SunBrite’s comparison guide lists different operating-temperature ranges by series; consult the selected generation’s documentation for the actual limits rather than applying a family-wide assumption.

Samsung’s Australia support guidance recommends installing its cited Terrace models under cover, protected from direct sunlight and severe weather. That advice is regional and model-specific; use the current instructions for the TV and location you have.

A weatherproof enclosure may suit someone who already owns a particular indoor TV or needs a specific indoor model outdoors. It is not a shortcut around the TV’s instructions: protection depends on the enclosure fitting correctly, shielding the set and allowing appropriate ventilation. SunBrite’s enclosure guidance recommends checking dust and water protection, dimensions and ventilation. Also check access to ports and how the enclosure handles condensation, mounting and electrical connections.
- Confirm the enclosure’s dimensions fit the exact TV, including any required clearances.
- Check its ingress-protection rating against the actual exposure at the site.
- Follow the enclosure maker’s ventilation instructions; trapping heat can create a problem even when rain is blocked.
- Check mounting orientation, port access, condensation management and electrical placement in the manuals for the TV, enclosure and mount.
- Compare the enclosure’s cost and assembly with buying an outdoor-rated TV. SunBrite notes that these can make an enclosure less attractive; that is manufacturer guidance, not an independent market-cost study.
There is no universal enclosure installation recipe in the cited guidance. If the manuals do not clearly cover the setup, do not treat the enclosure as a guarantee of safe outdoor operation.

What do the warranty and installation details change?
Verify the outdoor-use warranty for the exact model, region and generation before choosing. SunBrite’s comparison guide lists outdoor-use warranty terms of one year for Veranda 3 and two years for Veranda 4, Solis and Pro 2. These are figures in that comparison document, not a guarantee of current terms; check the product-specific warranty documentation.
Also confirm permitted placement and mounting orientation in the manuals for the TV and mount, and make sure the electrical setup is suitable for the location. A warranty term does not replace installation instructions or establish that every covered patio is safe for a given set.
Do accessories make an indoor TV suitable outdoors?
No accessory should be treated as a substitute for choosing a television designed for the exposure. Samsung describes a compatible Terrace dust cover as added overnight rain and dust protection for that matching Terrace model. It does not confer outdoor suitability on an indoor TV, and it should be used only as the manufacturer specifies.
Similarly, a cover or enclosure cannot override the TV manual. Confirm that every accessory is compatible with the exact model and follow both products’ instructions.
