For property photos, use Python to resize each image to the destination’s actual display needs, then compare JPEG, WebP, and AVIF versions at that size. Pillow is a practical starting point, but there is no universally best format or quality setting: the right choice depends on the listing platform’s upload rules, viewer compatibility, visible image detail, file size, and whether you need to retain metadata.
Start with the listing platform’s requirements
Before converting images, check the current rules for the platform where the photos will appear. Accepted formats, maximum dimensions, file-size limits, and metadata handling vary, and no particular listing platform is specified here. Do not assume that a format supported by your Python installation will also be accepted by the destination or display reliably for every viewer.

Once you know the platform’s limits, decide the intended display dimensions. If an original is substantially larger than necessary, resize it before final encoding. This avoids spending time and storage encoding pixels the audience will not see at the intended display size.
Use Pillow to create candidate formats
Pillow’s current format guide documents reading and writing JPEG and WebP, as well as reading and writing AVIF. Actual support can depend on how Pillow was built and which codec libraries are installed, so verify that your environment can encode the formats you plan to use. The available format-specific controls make it possible to compare candidates, but Pillow’s documentation does not establish a winning format for property photography.

Prepare a representative set of images before choosing a format or setting. Include rooms with bright windows and dark interiors, fine textures, mixed lighting, and straight architectural lines. Generate candidates at the dimensions the listing will display, then inspect them at that same size. This is a practical comparison method, not a published benchmark.
Resize and encode with explicit settings
This example opens an image, applies its EXIF orientation when available, resizes it to fit a target bounding box without enlarging it, and writes separate JPEG, WebP, and AVIF candidates. The format options are explicit so that the output is reproducible and easy to compare. Check your Pillow build before relying on AVIF encoding; an unsupported encoder will raise an error.

Adjust the bounding box to the destination’s requirements and compare the resulting files on the images that matter. If a format or option is unavailable in your installed build, omit that candidate or install a build with the needed codec support.
Compare formats by the result, not the quality number
Quality controls are format-specific. A value such as 85 for JPEG cannot be treated as equivalent to 85 for WebP or AVIF. Compare the outputs rather than expecting the numeric controls to mean the same thing.

Pillow’s JPEG guidance cautions against quality values above 95: “Values above 95 should be avoided; 100 disables portions of the JPEG compression algorithm, and results in large files with hardly any gain in image quality.” That warning is not a recommendation to use 95; the documentation does not identify an optimal JPEG quality for property photos.
For each candidate, record its byte size and inspect visible detail and color at the intended display size. Also consider encoding time and whether the format works in the installed build and destination. No cited comparison establishes compression percentages, speed rankings, or visual superiority for real-estate photos.

Decide what to do with color profiles and EXIF
An ICC profile can matter when color consistency is important. Pillow’s JPEG saving guidance says a profile is included when passed explicitly; if it is omitted, the documented save behavior writes the image with no profile attached. Pillow also allows EXIF data to be passed when saving JPEG. Do not assume that opening and saving an image will preserve either item automatically.

Retain metadata only when the workflow needs it. Property photos may contain location or other embedded information, so remove unnecessary or sensitive metadata before delivery. Pillow’s security guidance treats image metadata as untrusted and recommends stripping it when it is not required. If you do need a profile or selected metadata, pass it deliberately and verify what the saved output contains.

- Confirm the destination’s current accepted formats, maximum dimensions, file-size limits, and metadata rules.
- Resize to the intended display dimensions before producing final encoded files.
- Check that the installed Pillow build supports each format you want to test.
- Compare candidate file sizes and visual detail at the same display size, using representative interiors and exteriors.
- Preserve an ICC profile or EXIF only when the delivery workflow requires it; otherwise remove unnecessary or sensitive metadata.
- Validate the final files in the destination’s upload and viewing path.
