Virtual Reality Walking: Methods, Feel, and What Studies Show

Virtual reality walking uses real steps, steps in place, or redirected movement to navigate a virtual environment. The methods differ in room needs, direction control and equipment.

Virtual reality walking is a way to navigate a virtual environment using real steps, steps in place, or movement that a system subtly redirects. It does not necessarily mean covering the same distance in your room as your virtual character covers in the virtual world.

What “walking” means in virtual reality

In walking-based VR locomotion, a person’s walking motions drive movement through a virtual scene. A headset displays that scene; tracking and software determine how physical movement changes the virtual viewpoint. The headset alone does not define how movement works.

Walking-based locomotion is one category of VR navigation. Other methods include steering with a controller, selecting a destination to teleport to, or directly manipulating position or direction. Those approaches can be useful alternatives, but they do not ordinarily map walking motions into movement.

How the main walking methods differ

Method How virtual movement happens Space and tradeoffs
Real tracked walking You physically walk, and tracking maps your movement into the virtual environment. Walking can feel natural, but the real tracked area limits the available route.
Walking in place (WIP) You step on the spot to move the virtual viewpoint; orientation or gestures may control heading. It can work with little tracking space. Basic approaches may make lateral or backward movement harder to control.
Redirected walking (RDW) Software subtly changes the relationship between your physical path and the rendered virtual view. It can fit a longer virtual route into a smaller physical workspace, provided the redirection is not noticed.
Repositioning hardware A treadmill-like device supports viewpoint movement while you remain within the tracking space. Specialized equipment can be bulky and expensive; its mechanics may affect presence.

What each method feels like in practice

Real tracked walking

This is the most literal form: you take steps through the room, and the system reflects that movement in VR. Because the physical space sets the route’s practical limit, it is not a way to walk indefinitely through a virtual landscape.

Walking in place

With WIP, stepping in place acts as a proxy for traveling forward. Head or body alignment can provide direction, and some methods add gestures to support lateral and backward movement. A 2024 study by Kim and Lee evaluated two WIP methods with those additional movements in a study involving 15 participants; that is a study-specific evaluation, not a guarantee that every WIP system supports them.

Redirected walking

RDW makes the physical and virtual paths differ. The system can subtly guide a person’s real route while the virtual scene makes it seem as though they are following a different path. The University of Hamburg’s project description explains that redirected walking aims to fit VR movement into a limited tracked workspace: Redirected Walking for VR Games.

One approach uses audio. In a 2022 study, Weller, Brennecke and Zachmann described changing the sound of footsteps so users would deviate while believing they were walking straight: “The main idea is to achieve path manipulation by changing step noises to deviate the users, who still believe that they are walking a straight line.” Their within-subject study used a 10 × 20 m test area and reported average translational redirection of 1.7 m with audio feedback. The same paper reported 80 cm average amplification from visual methods at 20 m. These are results from that study setup, not expected performance figures for a particular headset or VR application. See the paper in The Visual Computer.

Repositioning systems

Treadmill-like systems are specialized hardware rather than a requirement for VR walking. A 2024 paper discussing walking-in-place approaches describes omnidirectional treadmill systems as potentially bulky and expensive, and notes that their mechanics can reduce presence. The tradeoff is therefore not simply whether a device can support movement, but whether its equipment and movement feel suit the experience.

How to choose or describe a VR walking method

There is no universal best method established by the cited studies. A useful comparison starts with the constraints of the experience:

  • Room and tracking area: Real walking depends directly on the space available. WIP reduces the need to travel across the room; redirected walking attempts to fit a virtual path into a smaller physical area.
  • Movement and direction: Consider whether the method supports only forward travel or also lateral and backward movement, and how heading is controlled.
  • Naturalness and presence: Physical steps can resemble ordinary walking, while gestures, redirection, or hardware change the movement experience. The cited sources do not establish one method as universally more immersive.
  • Equipment: A headset presents the scene, but tracking, software, and sometimes additional equipment determine how movement works. A treadmill is a specialized option, not a prerequisite.
  • Physical surroundings: Anyone moving in a headset still occupies real space. The virtual view does not remove walls, furniture, or other obstacles, so the available area remains relevant.

For example, “walking in place” specifically means stepping on the spot to move virtually; “redirected walking” means the system alters the mapping between a physical route and the virtual one. Calling both simply “walking” can obscure the different space requirements and movement inputs.

What current studies do—and do not—establish

Research describes several ways to make walking-like movement work with limited physical space, including walking in place and redirected paths. Kim and Lee’s 2024 work addresses lateral and backward movement in WIP; Weller, Brennecke and Zachmann’s 2022 study reports specific redirected-walking results. Neither establishes a universal ranking for comfort, safety, sickness, or immersion across users and VR systems.

A 2024 review in Frontiers in Virtual Reality discusses walking in place and its use as an alternative when tracked space is limited. Its positive characterization of WIP is the authors’ assessment, not a settled consensus that it is best for every application.
