If PuTTY authenticates successfully but displays an empty or black window, the SSH connection itself is usually working; the missing piece is an interactive shell, a pseudo-terminal (PTY), compatible terminal settings, or visible rendering. Check PTY and shell options first, then terminal type, display colours, logs, and finally the account’s server-side shell configuration. Changing one variable at a time identifies whether output is absent or merely invisible.

What a blank PuTTY window actually tells you
A successful password exchange proves only that SSH authentication completed. It does not prove that the server created an interactive shell, allocated a pseudo-terminal, or sent text that PuTTY can display. A session can therefore show a connected window with no prompt for several different reasons.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- No PTY was allocated: the server has no terminal device in which to run the normal interactive shell.
- The shell was suppressed: the session may be configured to start no shell, run a one-shot command, or terminate immediately after that command.
- The terminal type is incompatible: the server or an application may interpret the announced
TERMvalue incorrectly. - Output is rendered invisibly: screen-clearing control sequences and background-colour settings can make text appear absent even when bytes arrived.
- The account cannot start its shell: a login-shell setting, startup file, permission, or server policy can stop the prompt after authentication.
Use the checks below in that order. It avoids changing several settings at once and makes each result meaningful.
Fast diagnosis: the settings to check first
| Question | Correct starting setting | What a different result means |
|---|---|---|
| Is this an interactive SSH session? | Saved session type is SSH. | A different protocol or an incorrectly saved profile can open a window without the expected shell behavior. |
| Is a pseudo-terminal requested? | Connection > SSH > TTY enabled; do not select Don’t allocate a pseudo-terminal. | Without a PTY, an interactive Unix shell normally cannot behave as a terminal. |
| Should PuTTY start a shell? | Do not enable Don’t start a shell or command at all. | The SSH transport can authenticate and remain open while intentionally starting no prompt. |
| What terminal type is announced? | Connection > SSH > Data > Terminal-type string set to xterm. |
Try vt220 only when the remote application or server requires it. |
| Could text be hidden by clearing? | In Terminal, test the Use background colour to erase screen option. | A clear-screen operation using the same colour as the apparent text can make output look blank. |
| Did any data arrive? | Inspect Event Log and enable Session logging. | Printable output or control sequences in the log indicate a display or terminal-interpretation problem rather than a dead connection. |
1. Confirm PTY allocation
Interactive Unix shells normally run in a pseudo-terminal. A PTY gives the remote process a terminal device, allowing prompts, line editing, window-size handling, and terminal control sequences. PuTTY documentation describes most interactive Unix sessions as running in a pseudo-terminal; deliberately disabling it is intended for non-interactive uses.

PuTTY GUI steps
- Open PuTTY and load the profile that produces the blank window.
- Confirm the session protocol is SSH.
- In the category tree, open Connection > SSH > TTY.
- Ensure PTY allocation is enabled. Do not select Don’t allocate a pseudo-terminal.
- Return to Session, save the profile again, and reconnect so the corrected option is actually used.
If the prompt appears after this change, the original profile was requesting a non-interactive connection. Keep PTY allocation disabled only when you intentionally need a data-transfer or command-only session.
Command-line launches
When PuTTY is started from a command line, use -t to request a remote PTY. The -T option does the opposite and disables PTY allocation. For example, an SSH launch can include:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →putty.exe -ssh user@server -t
Remove an inherited -T option from scripts, shortcuts, or automation. If a wrapper builds the command line, inspect the final command rather than only the shortcut’s visible description. A command that authenticates but has no terminal can be perfectly valid for automation and still appear blank to a person expecting a shell.
2. Make sure PuTTY is allowed to start a shell
PTY allocation and shell startup are separate decisions. PuTTY’s -N option prevents it from attempting to start a shell or command on the remote server. The GUI equivalent is Don’t start a shell or command at all. Either setting can leave an authenticated connection with no prompt by design.

GUI checklist
- Open Connection > SSH.
- Find the option controlling whether PuTTY starts a shell or command. Clear Don’t start a shell or command at all.
- Check whether the profile specifies a particular remote command. Remove it temporarily so the normal login shell can start.
- Save the session and reconnect.
A one-shot command may produce no visible output, finish immediately, or leave the connection waiting without an interactive prompt. Test with a plain shell first; add the intended command back only after an ordinary login works.
Command-line checklist
- Remove
-Nwhen you expect an interactive shell. - Keep
-twhen the command needs a terminal. - Review scripts for a remote command that exits immediately or redirects all output.
3. Reset the terminal type to a compatible value
During SSH setup, PuTTY tells the server which terminal it emulates. PuTTY announces xterm by default. Shell startup files and terminal applications use this value to choose control sequences, colours, cursor movement, and screen-clearing behavior. If an application does not understand the announced type, its output can be malformed or apparently absent.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Set the default first
- Open Connection > SSH > Data.
- Set Terminal-type string to
xterm. - Save the profile and reconnect.
Do not change this field simply because the screen is black. First establish whether the default works; otherwise you may mask a PTY or shell problem.
When to test vt220
If a specific remote program or server manual says it requires a VT220-compatible terminal, test vt220 as a controlled second attempt. Compare the result with xterm and keep the value that the remote software supports. There is no universal replacement: terminal capabilities are interpreted by the server and by each application launched inside the shell.

| Terminal-type value | Use it when | Interpretation of a blank result |
|---|---|---|
xterm |
Normal PuTTY SSH session and modern Unix software. | If still blank, investigate PTY, shell startup, or rendering before changing more values. |
vt220 |
A legacy application or administrator documentation explicitly requires it. | If this fixes one program but breaks another, the application’s terminal assumptions differ. |
4. Check for invisible output caused by screen clearing
Terminal applications do not draw every character as a simple line of text. They send control sequences that move the cursor, clear regions, change colours, and redraw the screen. PuTTY’s Use background colour to erase screen setting affects how erased cells are painted. In some colour combinations, a clear-screen sequence can leave the window looking empty because the background matches what you expect to be text.
Test the rendering option
- Open the PuTTY configuration before connecting.
- Select Terminal.
- Toggle Use background colour to erase screen to the opposite state.
- Reconnect, or reset the terminal after changing the option.
- Compare the result with the previous setting.
This test is especially useful when logs show that output or terminal control sequences arrived. It is less likely to help when the server sent nothing at all. Avoid judging only by the background colour: type a command and check whether the cursor moves or characters appear.
5. Use Event Log and session logging as evidence
When the window is blank, visual inspection cannot tell you whether the server sent no bytes or PuTTY rendered received bytes invisibly. The Event Log and Session logging provide that distinction.
Event Log
Open PuTTY’s Event Log and look for evidence of SSH negotiation, authentication, channel creation, and subsequent activity. A successful authentication entry followed by no indication of a shell or channel producing output points toward PTY, shell, or server-side startup configuration. Evidence that a channel opened does not by itself guarantee a prompt, but it rules out the simplest “password failed” explanation.

Session logging
Enable Session logging and reconnect. Depending on the logging mode, the record can contain printable output and terminal control sequences. Read it as a diagnostic trace:
- Log is empty after authentication: investigate shell suppression, account startup, or a server process that emits no output.
- Log contains readable text but the window is blank: focus on PuTTY rendering, colours, or the terminal display state.
- Log contains escape sequences but little readable text: the application is drawing through terminal controls; test the terminal type and background-colour behavior.
- Log ends immediately: a one-shot command, shell exit, account policy, or server-side failure may have closed the interactive process.
Do not paste private keys, passwords, or sensitive command output into a support ticket. Redact credentials and personal data before sharing a log.

6. Check the remote account when PuTTY settings are correct
If PTY allocation, shell startup, terminal type, and rendering tests do not change the result, the fault may be on the server. PuTTY cannot create a usable prompt when the account is configured with no valid login shell or when shell startup files fail before printing anything.
Ask an administrator to verify
- The account’s configured login shell exists and is executable.
- The account is permitted to start an interactive session under the server’s SSH policy.
- Shell startup files do not exit immediately, redirect the terminal, clear the display indefinitely, or wait for input that is unavailable.
- A forced command, restricted account, or subsystem configuration is not replacing the normal shell.
- The server accepts a PTY request for this account and does not apply a policy that rejects or strips it.
- Recent changes to shell profiles, environment variables, access controls, or operating-system updates did not coincide with the symptom.
If another account on the same server works from the same computer and PuTTY profile, compare the accounts’ login shells and startup files rather than reinstalling PuTTY. If every account is blank, compare the server’s SSH configuration and PTY policy.
Best Value
Safe isolation test
An administrator can temporarily test the account with a minimal shell startup that bypasses custom profile commands, or provide a separate diagnostic account with a known-good shell. The purpose is to separate a broken user startup file from an SSH daemon or operating-system problem. Restore the normal account policy after testing.
7. A controlled troubleshooting workflow
Use this sequence when you need a repeatable diagnosis instead of random setting changes. Save the original profile first so you can revert every experiment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Record the symptom: note whether authentication succeeds, whether the window closes, whether a cursor is visible, and whether any banner appears.
- Start with a clean SSH profile: confirm the protocol is SSH and remove any custom remote command.
- Request a PTY: enable the TTY allocation option and ensure no
-Toption is present. - Allow shell startup: clear the no-shell option and remove
-N. - Use
xterm: set the terminal-type string to the default value and reconnect. - Check rendering: toggle Use background colour to erase screen, reconnect, and compare.
- Capture evidence: inspect Event Log and enable Session logging for one fresh connection.
- Escalate with facts: provide the administrator with the exact PuTTY options, terminal type, timestamps, and redacted log evidence.
Change only one setting between attempts. If you alter PTY allocation, terminal type, and colours together, a successful connection will not reveal which condition caused the blank screen.
Common symptom patterns and the next move
| Observed pattern | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| Authentication succeeds and the window remains open with no prompt. | Check that a PTY is allocated and that no-shell or -N setting is active. |
| The window closes immediately after login. | Look for a one-shot command, a forced command, or a shell that exits during startup. |
| A banner appears, then the display becomes empty. | Test background-colour erasing and inspect logged control sequences. |
| Text appears as garbled characters or broken screen updates. | Reset terminal type to xterm; test vt220 only when required by the remote software. |
| The same profile works for one account but not another. | Have the administrator compare login shells and startup files for the accounts. |
| Every profile on one server is blank, while other servers work. | Investigate server-side SSH, PTY, account policy, and recent configuration changes. |
| Logs show readable output but the window remains blank. | Focus on PuTTY’s Terminal display and colour settings rather than authentication. |
What not to assume
- “The password was accepted, so the shell must be running.” Authentication and shell creation are separate stages.
- “A black background means the server is offline.” It may be a normal background with invisible or cleared text.
- “Changing random terminal types will fix it.” Start with
xtermand use a documented alternative only for a compatibility test. - “Reinstalling PuTTY is the first remedy.” A saved-session option or remote account configuration is more commonly relevant to this symptom.
- “A log containing escape sequences is corrupt.” Those sequences are how terminal applications draw screens; they are useful evidence.
Version and scope notes
The PuTTY documentation index lists version 0.85 as the latest release documentation, while the detailed behavior described in the relevant manuals is documented in versions 0.70, 0.76, and 0.78. Newer builds may move or slightly rename menu labels, but the underlying controls—PTY allocation, shell or command startup, terminal type, terminal rendering, Event Log, and Session logging—remain the diagnostic concepts to find.
Results also depend on the remote operating system, SSH server configuration, account policy, shell, startup files, and any application launched after login. A setting that is correct for an interactive Unix shell may be inappropriate for a deliberate non-interactive command. Treat the blank screen as a symptom, collect log evidence, and match the fix to the session’s intended use.
