1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf /spawnmonster appears to do nothing in Starbound, check the command in this order: enable admin mode with /admin, use a valid monster or critter spawn name, aim at an open position with your mouse, and test the bare command before adding a level or JSON. Use /spawnnpc only for actual NPCs such as villagers, guards, merchants, or crew. If the minimal command still fails, inspect Starbound/storage/starbound.log; a message such as Could not spawn Monster of type followed by a JSON exception usually points to a broken or incompatible mod definition rather than punctuation.

Use the command that matches the entity
Starbound has separate spawn commands for monsters and NPCs. The distinction matters because many entities players casually call “NPCs” are implemented as monsters or critters.

|---|---|---|---|
| Monster or critter | /spawnmonster |
/spawnmonster type [level] [variantParameters] |
The entity appears at the player’s mouse cursor. Critters use this same name-based command. |
| NPC | /spawnnpc |

Use the documented race and NPC type order. A seed can be added when repeatable NPC generation is required. |
For a creature, start with a form such as:
/spawnmonster poptop
For an NPC, the corresponding pattern is:
/spawnnpc human villager 1

1. Enable admin mode
Enter:
/admin
Confirm that the game accepts the admin command before trying to spawn anything. /spawnmonster is an admin command, and admin/debug commands require admin mode. In multiplayer, the server’s settings may prevent a player from gaining admin privileges; in that case, repeating the command locally cannot overcome the server restriction.
2. Aim at an open location
The monster is targeted to the mouse cursor, not to a fixed point beside the player. Move the cursor to a clear, visible area and try again. A blocked or unsuitable position can make a successful spawn difficult to see, especially when testing in a crowded base or near terrain.
3. Test only the creature name
Use the smallest possible command:
/spawnmonster <validMonsterId>
Do not include a level, capture flag, or JSON override during this first test. If this base form works, the command itself, your privilege state, and the spawn location are probably sound; any later failure is likely tied to an option or the particular variant data.
4. Verify the identifier
The type argument is the monster’s spawn name. A misspelling, an ID from another game build, or a name supplied by a mod that is not loaded prevents Starbound from constructing the entity. Use the exact identifier exposed by the installed vanilla assets or by the active mod. Where the asset list expects lowercase, preserve that lowercase spelling.
Do not treat a display name as an ID automatically. A creature may be shown in-game with a friendly name while the command expects an internal spawn name. If you are unsure which name a mod provides, check that mod’s own asset documentation or inspect the error in the log after a failed attempt.

5. Add one option at a time
Once the bare command succeeds, add a numeric level by itself:
/spawnmonster hugebiped 10
Only after that works should you test variant parameters. The command reference recommends surrounding variant JSON with single quotes:
/spawnmonster <type> 1 '{"capturable":true}'
This staged approach tells you whether a problem is caused by the identifier, the level argument, or the JSON. OpenStarbound’s API documentation describes monster construction as returning an entity ID on success and nil when the requested entity cannot be created, so a failed construction can originate in the data supplied to the constructor rather than in the slash-command text itself.
6. Read the log immediately
After a failed attempt, open:
Starbound/storage/starbound.log
Look at the entries written at the time of the command. A clear “could not spawn” message identifies the requested type; a following JSON exception often identifies the field or asset that broke loading. Save the relevant lines before trying several other commands, because a later error can bury the original one.
7. Test ordinary creatures before bosses
Most listed bosses are not expected to work correctly when spawned into a random world. If a boss fails while an ordinary creature works, treat that as a world-context limitation rather than proof that your syntax is wrong. Establish a successful normal monster spawn first, then decide whether the boss requires its intended encounter context.

Why “nothing happens” after /spawnmonster
Admin mode was not accepted
If /admin is rejected, unavailable, or has no administrative effect, stop troubleshooting the monster ID. The spawn command will not be a useful test until the required privilege is active. On a multiplayer server, ask the server operator to check whether players are allowed to obtain admin privileges; server policy can block this even when the same command works in a local session.
The creature spawned outside your view
Because the command uses the mouse cursor, a cursor over a wall, platform, hazard, or busy room can produce a result that is hidden or immediately hard to distinguish. Move to an open area, place the cursor where you can see the floor, and repeat the minimal command. This is a visibility test, not a change to the syntax.
The name is not a loaded spawn asset
Starbound cannot create an entity whose requested type is absent. Common causes are a typo, capitalization that does not match the asset name, a name copied from a different version, or a mod that is disabled, missing, or not loaded in the current session. Test a known working vanilla creature first. If the vanilla test succeeds, focus on the mod’s identifier and load state rather than on admin mode.
An optional argument is invalid
A command that works without options but fails after you add a level or JSON has narrowed the fault to that addition. Remove the newest argument, confirm the base command again, and reintroduce options individually. Keep the JSON in the quoted form expected by the command reference; malformed quoting or invalid fields can prevent construction even when the monster name is correct.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The mod’s definition is malformed
A failed modded spawn can produce a misleading command-level symptom. One Chucklefish forum report records the sequence Could not spawn Monster of type 'smoglinz' followed by a JSON exception for a missing appliesWeatherStatusEffects key. That pattern indicates a malformed or incompatible monster definition. Repairing the command punctuation will not supply a missing required field. Update the mod if a compatible release exists, repair the asset only if you understand its format, or remove the mod to confirm that it is the source of the failure.

The target is a boss in the wrong world context
Boss entries are a special case. Starbounder warns that most listed bosses will not behave correctly when inserted into a random world. A boss-specific failure therefore needs to be separated from ordinary creature troubleshooting: first prove that admin mode and a normal monster ID work, then treat the boss as a context-dependent encounter.
Build a command without hiding the fault
Use this progression when you need a level or a variant:
- Privilege check: run
/adminand verify acceptance. - Base entity: run
/spawnmonster <type>at a visible, open cursor position. - Level check: run
/spawnmonster <type> 1or another numeric level supported by the asset. - Variant check: add one quoted JSON object, for example
'{"capturable":true}'. - Log check: if the new form fails, inspect
starbound.logbefore changing anything else.
The placeholders in these examples are not literal IDs. The angle-bracket text must be replaced by a real spawn name from the installed game or mod. Keeping each test separate gives you a clear “last known working” command that can be used for comparison.
Recommended Free Tools
A practical capture test, for example, should not be your first test. First establish that the creature can spawn with its name alone; then add the level; then add the capture variant. If the capture form fails while the earlier forms succeed, the creature’s definition or the variant data may not support that request.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Monster, critter, or NPC? Choose by implementation
The word “NPC” is often used informally for any non-player character, but the command system follows the entity’s implementation. Use this decision table before editing a command.
Best Value
| Observed target | First command to try | Arguments to verify | If it fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wild hostile creature | /spawnmonster |
Monster spawn name, then optional level | Check admin mode, cursor position, spelling, and the log. |
| Passive critter | /spawnmonster |
Critter spawn name; same name-based form | Confirm that the critter ID is loaded and test without options. |
| Villager, guard, or merchant | /spawnnpc |
Race, NPC type, and optional level in documented order | Do not substitute a monster ID; check the NPC arguments instead. |
| Crew member or another service character | /spawnnpc |
Race and NPC type; add a seed when repeatable generation is needed | Verify that the target is an NPC asset rather than a monster asset. |
If /spawnnpc reports a problem while you are trying to create a creature, switching back and forth between commands will not fix the underlying classification. Identify which asset family supplies the target, then use that family’s command and argument order.
Use the log to distinguish a typo from a mod defect
After reproducing the failure once, inspect the lines around the command time in Starbound/storage/starbound.log. The wording provides a useful branch:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Unknown or missing type: recheck the exact spawn name, lowercase requirements, game version, and whether the supplying mod is loaded.
- Could not spawn Monster of type followed by a JSON exception: inspect the named monster’s asset for a missing, malformed, or incompatible field. The reported
smoglinz/appliesWeatherStatusEffectscase is an example of this pattern. - No visible result with no useful error: repeat with admin mode confirmed, a known vanilla ID, and the cursor over open ground. The location or privilege state may be masking the result.
- Failure only for a boss: test an ordinary creature and consider the random-world limitation before changing syntax.
Keep the exact error text, including capitalization and the requested type, when asking for help. A diagnosis remains incomplete without the command you entered, the creature ID, your platform and game build, and the active mod list. Those details determine whether the issue is privilege-related, an identifier mismatch, a parameter problem, or an incompatible asset.
Multiplayer and modded-game checks
When the server controls admin access
In a local session, /admin is the first privilege test. In multiplayer, a server setting can block players from gaining admin status. If the same command works offline but not on the server, that difference is evidence of a privilege-policy issue rather than a monster-definition issue. The server operator must resolve access before spawn-command testing can be conclusive.
When a mod is installed but not active
A mod-provided creature name is usable only when the relevant mod is present and loaded in the session. A name copied from a workshop page, an old installation, or another player’s setup may not exist in your current asset set. Test a vanilla monster, then test the modded ID with no optional arguments. If only the modded ID fails, capture the log entry and verify the mod version and load state.
When several mods change the same asset
Malformed JSON can be introduced by an outdated asset or by an incompatibility between content packages. The log’s field-level exception is more useful than repeatedly changing the command. Temporarily updating, repairing, or removing the suspect mod can confirm the diagnosis; do not assume that a successful bare command proves every optional variant in that definition is valid.
A repeatable troubleshooting checklist
- Is
/adminaccepted, and are you allowed admin privileges on this server? - Is the mouse cursor over an open, visible location?
- Are you using
/spawnmonsterfor a monster or critter and/spawnnpcfor an NPC? - Is the spawn name an exact, loaded asset ID rather than a display name?
- Did you test the name alone before adding a level?
- Did you add JSON only after the level form worked, with the JSON enclosed in single quotes?
- Did you read
Starbound/storage/starbound.logimmediately after the failure? - Does the error identify malformed JSON or a missing field in a mod asset?
- Are you testing a boss in a random world where it may not function correctly?
- Can you provide the exact command, creature ID, platform/build, mod list, and log excerpt for a creature-specific diagnosis?
What a successful diagnosis looks like
You have isolated the issue when one of these outcomes is clear: a known monster spawns after admin mode and cursor checks; the base command works but a level or JSON addition fails; a vanilla creature works while one modded ID produces a field-level JSON error; an NPC appears only after switching to the race/type form; or a boss remains the only failure after ordinary monsters work. Each result points to a different fix, so preserve the smallest command that succeeds and change only the failing part.
