Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe dependable pattern is a two-stage Docker build: install pinned Python dependencies in a temporary builder image, copy only the installed runtime and agent source into a slim final image, run it as a non-root user, and keep credentials outside the image. Add an exec-based entrypoint, stdout/stderr logging, a health endpoint, and a tight .dockerignore. This produces a reproducible container that is easier to update, scan, and operate than a development environment copied wholesale into production.

The example below assumes a Python agent served on port 8000. Change the module path, health route, Python version, and dependency file to match your project, then build and test the image before deploying it.

What a production-ready agent container should contain
Containerizing an AI agent is not just putting its source code in an image. The image should contain the interpreter, the exact libraries required at runtime, your agent package, and nothing that belongs only to development or deployment. Configuration and credentials are supplied when the container starts.
A useful boundary is:
- Image: immutable application code and pinned runtime dependencies.
- Environment or secret store: API keys, database passwords, model endpoints, and per-environment settings.
- Orchestrator or host: ports, restart policy, resource limits, TLS termination, and log retention.
This separation means a key can be rotated without rebuilding the image and the same artifact can move from a laptop to staging and production. It also prevents accidental inclusion of local credentials, caches, test data, and source-control history.

Prepare the agent project before writing the Dockerfile
Define one foreground process
The container should have one clear long-running process: for example, an HTTP server that accepts tasks, a queue worker, or a scheduled polling loop. If the agent needs migrations, cache warm-up, or another short pre-start action, run it in an entrypoint script and then replace the shell with the agent process. Do not leave a shell as PID 1.
Pin the dependency graph
AI stacks can change behavior when an SDK, tokenizer, web framework, or numerical library changes. Generate a dependency file from the environment you tested, record exact versions (including transitive packages when your lock workflow supports it), and commit that file. Rebuild deliberately when you want upgrades; do not allow an unbounded requirement such as package>=1 to silently change a production image.

agent-project/
├── app/
│ ├── __init__.py
│ └── main.py
├── requirements.txt
├── entrypoint.sh
├── Dockerfile
└── .dockerignore
Keep model downloads, notebooks, local virtual environments, test reports, and datasets outside the application directory unless the agent genuinely needs them at runtime. Large model weights usually belong in a separately managed volume or model-serving system; copying them into every application image makes distribution and patching expensive.
Use a multi-stage Dockerfile
The builder stage below compiles or installs dependencies into a temporary prefix. The runtime stage starts from a fresh slim image and receives only that prefix and the application files. Docker’s official multi-stage guidance describes this arrangement as a way to keep intermediate files and build tooling out of the final stage.
FROM python:3.12-slim AS builder
ENV PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1
PYTHONUNBUFFERED=1
PIP_NO_CACHE_DIR=1
WORKDIR /build
COPY requirements.txt .
RUN pip install --no-cache-dir --prefix=/install -r requirements.txt
FROM python:3.12-slim
ENV PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1
PYTHONUNBUFFERED=1
RUN groupadd --gid 10001 app
&& useradd --uid 10001 --gid 10001 --create-home --shell /usr/sbin/nologin app
WORKDIR /app
COPY --from=builder /install /usr/local
COPY app ./app
COPY entrypoint.sh ./entrypoint.sh
RUN chmod 0755 /app/entrypoint.sh
&& chown -R 10001:10001 /app
USER 10001:10001
EXPOSE 8000
HEALTHCHECK --interval=30s --timeout=5s --start-period=20s --retries=3
CMD python -c "import urllib.request; urllib.request.urlopen('http://127.0.0.1:8000/health', timeout=3)" || exit 1
ENTRYPOINT ["/app/entrypoint.sh"]
CMD ["uvicorn", "app.main:app", "--host", "0.0.0.0", "--port", "8000"]
Use the Python tag your application supports; the 3.12-slim tag is an example, not a promise that every agent dependency supports that interpreter. Rebuild when the base-image digest or security updates change.

Why each stage exists
| Part | Purpose | What should not remain in the final image |
|---|---|---|
| Builder | Installs the pinned dependency set and supplies compilers or headers needed to build wheels. | Package caches, compilers, header files, temporary source trees, and build logs. |
| Runtime | Runs the agent with the interpreter and libraries copied from /install. |
Test tools, credentials, notebooks, and development-only dependencies. |
| Non-root identity | Limits damage if the process is compromised and makes file ownership explicit. | Any need to switch back to root during startup. |
A single-stage image can exceed 2 GB when pip compilation artifacts, build tools, and CUDA-related libraries remain alongside an LLM SDK. A 2026 NiteAgent guide reports a 2GB-plus single-stage agent image as an example of that failure mode; treat it as a vendor report, not an independent benchmark. Multi-stage copying will not remove runtime libraries that the agent genuinely needs, but it prevents temporary tooling from being shipped.
Make the entrypoint forward signals
Create entrypoint.sh with a POSIX shell available in the slim image:
#!/bin/sh
set -eu
if [ "${RUN_MIGRATIONS:-0}" = "1" ]; then
python -m app.migrate
fi
exec "$@"
The final exec replaces the shell with Uvicorn (or your worker command), so the agent becomes PID 1 and receives termination signals directly. That allows graceful shutdown, cancellation of in-flight work, and clean container replacement. Avoid using sudo inside the image; Docker’s official guidance notes that it has unpredictable TTY and signal-forwarding behavior. If migrations are not required, remove that branch rather than carrying an unused command into production.
Expose a meaningful health endpoint
A health check should answer whether the process can serve work, not whether a Python import happened to succeed. Keep the endpoint fast and unauthenticated on the container’s loopback interface, and do not make it call an expensive model for every probe.
from fastapi import FastAPI
app = FastAPI()
@app.get("/health")
def health():
return {"status": "ok"}
If readiness depends on a database, queue, or model gateway, expose a separate readiness route that checks those dependencies with a short timeout. Use the lightweight liveness route for the Docker HEALTHCHECK, and let your orchestrator decide whether repeated readiness failures should stop receiving traffic. The Dockerfile’s probe assumes that /health listens on port 8000; change both values together if your server uses another route or port.
Keep the build context small with .dockerignore
Docker sends the build context to the daemon or builder before executing COPY. Excluding unnecessary files speeds builds and reduces the chance that secrets or private data are available to build instructions.

Review this list against your application. If a test or a small configuration file is required at runtime, do not exclude it blindly. Conversely, add local cloud credentials, editor folders, downloaded model caches, and generated artifacts whenever they exist in your workspace. A .dockerignore entry does not protect a secret already copied by another instruction, so inspect the Dockerfile as well.
Build and inspect the image
Build with a clear tag
docker build --pull -t my-agent:2026-10-14 .
--pull checks for a newer version of the referenced base tag. For reproducibility, record the resulting image digest in your release metadata and rebuild when security updates are available. Do not use a mutable tag as the sole production identifier.
Check the image contents and user
docker image inspect my-agent:2026-10-14
docker run --rm my-agent:2026-10-14 id
The second command should show UID 10001 rather than root. To investigate size, compare the layer history:
docker history my-agent:2026-10-14
Unexpectedly large layers usually come from a copied virtual environment, package cache, model directory, or broad COPY . . instruction. Copy dependency metadata first, install it, and then copy only the runtime source so dependency layers remain cacheable when code changes.
Supply configuration and secrets at runtime
Never place API keys, access tokens, private certificates, or passwords in a Dockerfile, source file, image label, build argument, or committed .env file. Build arguments and environment variables set during a build can appear in layer history. Pass non-secret configuration with environment variables at startup, and use a secrets manager for credentials.
For local testing, a command can look like:
docker run --rm
--env AGENT_MODEL=your-model-id
--env AGENT_LOG_LEVEL=info
--env-file .env.local
-p 127.0.0.1:8000:8000
my-agent:2026-10-14
Keep .env.local outside the image and out of version control. In production, Docker secrets or a dedicated manager such as HashiCorp Vault is preferable to distributing a flat environment file. Grant the agent only the credentials it needs, rotate them independently of image releases, and verify that exception messages and request logs do not print secret values.

Choose the network boundary deliberately
The process inside the container normally binds to 0.0.0.0 so Docker’s network namespace can reach it. The host does not have to publish that port publicly.
| Use case | Run or route | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Local development | -p 127.0.0.1:8000:8000 |
Only the local machine can reach the agent. |
| Private service-to-service traffic | Attach the container to an internal Docker network and omit a host port. | Peer services reach the container by its network name; no host listener is created. |
| Public webhook | Publish through a TLS-terminating reverse proxy and forward to the private container port. | Certificate handling, rate limiting, and public routing stay at the edge. |
A production guide recommends binding the agent port to 127.0.0.1 and routing public webhooks through a TLS-terminating reverse proxy. Do not confuse the application bind address with the host publication address: the former can remain 0.0.0.0 inside the container while the latter stays restricted.
Make logs and shutdown behavior container-native
Write structured application logs to stdout and errors to stderr. Docker’s logging drivers can then collect, rotate, and forward them without a file-sharing scheme inside the image. Avoid writing the only copy of a conversation, tool call, or exception to a local file that disappears when the container is replaced.
Include a request or job identifier, elapsed time, model name, and outcome where appropriate, but redact prompts, authorization headers, and personally identifiable data according to your retention policy. The exec-form ENTRYPOINT and CMD in the example ensure that SIGTERM reaches the Python server. Set the server’s graceful-shutdown timeout to less than the orchestrator’s termination window so in-flight work can finish without a forced kill.
Recommended Free Tools
Reduce size without breaking ML dependencies
Prefer slim as the default
Slim Python images remove many operating-system packages while retaining the Debian-family compatibility expected by common prebuilt wheels. Alpine can be smaller, but its musl-based environment can complicate binary wheels for scientific and machine-learning packages, causing slower source builds or incompatibilities. Choose Alpine only after the complete dependency set has been built and exercised on it.
Separate build and runtime requirements
Compilers, development headers, documentation generators, linters, and test runners belong in the builder or a development image. Runtime requirements should be installed from a production dependency file. If a package downloads a model or language data at install time, decide explicitly whether that asset belongs in the image, a mounted volume, or an external service; do not let an installer fetch it implicitly on every build.
Best Value
Keep layers cacheable
Copy the dependency file before application source, as in the example. Docker can reuse the expensive install layer when only agent code changes. Use --no-cache-dir, remove temporary archives in the same RUN instruction that creates them, and avoid recursive copies of the repository root when only app/ is needed.
Apply security controls beyond the user directive
- Use an explicit numeric UID and GID so file ownership is stable across hosts.
- Do not grant Linux capabilities or privileged mode unless a documented requirement exists.
- Set read-only root filesystems and temporary writable mounts where the runtime supports them.
- Restrict outbound network access to the model, database, queue, and telemetry endpoints the agent requires.
- Scan the built image for operating-system and Python vulnerabilities before release, and review the results rather than suppressing every finding.
- Use a trusted registry with access controls and retain the digest associated with each deployment.
- Keep prompts, tool outputs, and traces free of secrets before sending them to observability systems.
These controls complement, rather than replace, dependency pinning and a non-root process. A pinned package can still contain a vulnerability, and a slim image can still expose an insecure endpoint.
Run the container locally before deployment
- Build the image with the exact dependency file committed for the release.
- Start it with a non-production test key or a mocked model endpoint and publish port 8000 only on localhost.
- Request
http://127.0.0.1:8000/healthand confirm an HTTP success response. - Submit a representative agent task, including a tool failure and a timeout, and verify that errors reach stderr without exposing credentials.
- Stop the container with
docker stopand confirm the process exits within the configured grace period. - Run the image as the declared UID, inspect its logs, and verify that it does not need to write outside an intended temporary directory.
- Test a rebuild after changing only application code to ensure dependency layers are reused and no local files enter the image.
An AI-generated Dockerfile should be treated as a draft. Build it, scan it, run failure cases, and have someone review the network, secret, and permission assumptions before production use.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Correction |
|---|---|---|
ModuleNotFoundError after the build |
The package is absent from the pinned dependency file, or the builder prefix was copied to the wrong location. | Install from the production requirements file and verify that the runtime interpreter searches /usr/local. |
| Permission denied when the agent writes a cache | The directory was created as root before USER switched to UID 10001. |
Create the directory in the image and chown it to the runtime UID, or mount a writable temporary directory. |
| Health check fails while the server appears running | The route, port, or bind address differs from the Dockerfile probe. | Call the route from inside the container, then align HEALTHCHECK, server arguments, and published ports. |
| Container exits immediately | The entrypoint command finished, the module path is wrong, or a required environment variable is missing. | Read docker logs, run the image with an interactive shell only for diagnosis, and correct the foreground command. |
| Large image despite a multi-stage build | Runtime-only model files or CUDA libraries are genuinely large, or a broad copy instruction included caches and datasets. | Measure layers, tighten .dockerignore, remove development packages, and move optional assets to a separately managed service or volume. |
| Graceful shutdown does not happen | A shell remains PID 1 because the entrypoint omitted exec. |
End the script with exec "$@" and use exec-form Docker instructions. |
| Credentials appear in an image scan | A secret was copied from the build context or embedded in an argument or source file. | Rotate it, remove it from the repository and image history, tighten .dockerignore, and inject a replacement at runtime. |
Release decisions to record
For each image version, record the Python base tag and digest, dependency lock or requirements revision, source commit, exposed application port, health route, runtime UID, required environment variable names (not their values), and the rollback image digest. Document which external model and tool endpoints the agent calls and which reverse proxy terminates TLS. This metadata makes an incident reproducible without putting confidential configuration into the artifact.
The resulting package is intentionally boring: a slim runtime, exact dependencies, only the agent code, a non-root identity, no baked-in secrets, logs that leave through stdout and stderr, and a process that receives operating-system signals. That combination is the practical baseline for operating an AI agent as a Docker container.
