Start by reproducing the problem once, copy starbound.log, and use that file to decide which fix applies.

The safest diagnostic sequence is: launch through Steam, verify the mod location, read the fresh log, check dependencies and priorities, then disable every mod and re-enable them systematically. Back up the storage folder before changing a content-heavy mod on an existing save.

Identify exactly how the mod is failing
“Not working” can describe several different failures. Record what happens immediately after you reproduce the issue; the symptom determines which part of the log and installation to inspect.
The mod is absent from the game
The game starts, but a weapon, block, quest, interface change, biome, or other feature supplied by the mod is missing. Typical causes are an incorrect launch path, an inactive or incomplete Workshop subscription, a manual installation in the wrong directory, or another mod overriding the same asset later in the load sequence.

Starbound crashes while starting
A startup crash often points to a missing required mod, an invalid patch, a malformed file, or a mod built for a different game version. Do not repeatedly relaunch before copying the log: Starbound rotates the log when it starts, so the evidence from the failed launch can be replaced.
A patch or Lua error appears
Patch failures and LuaException entries usually identify the asset, script, or mod involved. A patch can fail because the target asset changed in a game update, another mod changed it first, or the patch’s expected path no longer exists.

A loading freeze may be caused by a dependency problem or a conflicting mod even when no obvious pop-up appears. Let the game finish its attempt once, close it, and inspect the current log rather than guessing.
The mod works until one item, planet, quest, or interface is used
This pattern narrows the search to the content that is loaded at that moment. Note the exact action and search the log for the affected asset name, a Lua error, or the mod identifier.
Launch Workshop mods through Steam
Steam Workshop subscriptions depend on the Steam launch context. Start Starbound from your Steam library when using Workshop content.
The Chucklefish modding tutorial warns: “If you run starbound.exe directly from /win32/ or /win64/ (such as from a copied Starbound folder, just to test your mod), it will not load workshop mods correctly.” A shortcut to the executable, a copied game directory, or a direct launch from the win32 or win64 folder can therefore make subscribed mods appear to be missing even though Steam shows them as installed.
Correct launch test
- Exit Starbound completely.
- Open Steam and select Starbound in your library.
- Click the normal Play button rather than running
starbound.exefrom the installation folder. - Wait for Steam to finish any Workshop download or update shown in the client.
- Reproduce the problem once and then inspect the newly written log.
If the mod appears after this test, the installation was probably fine and the launch context was the cause. Keep using the Steam launch path for Workshop play.

Verify that the mod is installed where Starbound can read it
Manual mods
For a manually installed mod, inspect the game’s mods directory. The mod’s files must be directly where Starbound expects them, not buried under an additional folder created when an archive was extracted.
A common bad layout looks like mods/ModName/ModName/ when the actual mod files are inside the second directory. Open the extracted folder and identify the level containing the mod’s metadata and asset folders; that level belongs in the game’s mods directory. Do not move individual files out of their expected internal structure.
Workshop subscriptions
Confirm that the subscription is still active and that Steam has completed downloading it before launching Starbound. A Workshop page can show a subscription while the client is still downloading or updating files. Close and reopen Steam if the download remains queued, then allow it to finish before testing.

Do not mix an uncertain copy with the live installation
Testing from a copied Starbound folder can change which content is visible, especially for Workshop mods. Use the normal Steam installation and launch path for a clean diagnostic baseline. If you need a separate test environment, keep the copy isolated and remember that directly launching its executable will not load Workshop content correctly.
Read starbound.log immediately after the failure
starbound.log is the decisive diagnostic file. It records loading status, patch processing, Lua failures, missing assets, and other errors. The file is rotated when Starbound restarts, so copy the current log before starting the game again.

For a standard Steam installation on Windows, open:

The official Starbound FAQ documents equivalent storage paths for macOS and Linux. The important detail is the storage directory inside the Starbound installation, where the active log is written.
Capture the right log
- Close Starbound after reproducing the issue.
- Copy
starbound.logto another folder before relaunching. - Open the copy in a text editor.
- Search for
Error,Exception,Could not apply patch,LuaException, missing asset names, and mod identifiers. - Read several lines before and after the first relevant error; later messages can be consequences rather than the original cause.
A log that names a required mod, an asset path, or a patch target gives you a more reliable next step than repeatedly reinstalling files at random.
What common log entries mean

Check dependencies, priorities, and load order
Starbound does not treat every mod as an isolated overlay. Base assets load first, then the regular local mods folder, followed by Workshop content. Within that process, a mod’s priority and its declared requirements can change the effective sequence.
Required mods
A mod’s requires field names mods that must load immediately before it. If a listed mod does not exist or is disabled, startup can halt and the log records the missing requirement. Install or enable the required mod before investigating more complicated conflicts.

Check the mod’s documentation or Workshop description for dependencies and compatibility notes. Match the exact dependency name where the mod provides one; a similarly named folder may not satisfy the requirement.
Priority and overwrite behavior
When two mods change the same asset, the later effective change can override the earlier one. Workshop content is scanned after the regular mods folder, and explicit priority values can also affect ordering. As a result, a mod may load without an error yet appear not to work because another mod’s version of the asset wins.
Use the log and the mod descriptions together. If the first mod works alone but not with a second mod, compare the assets both modify and check whether either author specifies a priority or compatibility rule. Do not solve an overwrite conflict by randomly renaming folders; that can create a different, unsupported order.

Load-order diagnostic
- Test the suspect mod with all other mods disabled.
- If it works alone, enable the other mods in small groups.
- When it fails, inspect the newly captured log for the first patch or Lua error.
- Compare the failing mod’s changed asset with the last group added.
- Follow any stated priority or
requiresrelationship instead of relying on alphabetical order.
Isolate the mod that causes the error
Chucklefish support recommends: “If you’re using mods and having issues – first try disabling all mods to identify if they may be a factor, then enable one test which may be causing the error.” This separates a mod problem from a damaged or otherwise failing vanilla installation.

- Back up the
storagefolder before making changes. - Disable every mod, including both Workshop subscriptions and manually installed content.
- Launch Starbound through Steam and verify that an unmodded game reaches the normal starting point.
- If vanilla Starbound also fails, capture its log and address that baseline problem before reintroducing mods.
- If vanilla works, enable one mod and test the specific symptom.
- Repeat until the failure returns, then copy the log and record the last mod enabled.
Use a half-split with a large collection
Enabling one mod at a time is clear but slow with a large collection. A half-split preserves the same logic with fewer restarts:
- Divide the enabled collection into two groups.
- Test the first half with the second half disabled.
- If the issue appears, divide that failing half again; if it does not, test the other half.
- Continue halving the failing group until one mod or a small interacting set remains.
- Test the final suspect alone, then test it with likely dependencies and conflict partners.
This method finds a single failing mod efficiently, but interacting pairs require a final two-mod or small-group test. A mod that works alone can still conflict with another mod that changes the same asset.

The official support guidance is to update mods when the game updates and report continuing problems to the mod developer. A game update can change an asset path, patch target, script interface, or other assumption that an older mod relies on.
When the problem began after an update
- Note the date or game build change that preceded the failure.
- Open each affected Workshop page and check for a newer version, required dependency, compatibility note, or known conflict.
- Allow Steam to complete all Workshop updates.
- Retest with only the updated mod and its stated requirements enabled.
- If the updated mod still fails, preserve the fresh log and send the relevant error to the mod developer.
Do not assume every subscribed item updates at the same time. A dependency may still be outdated even when the main mod has received a new upload.

Back up the Starbound storage folder before disabling or removing a substantial content mod. Characters and universe data may already contain assets supplied by that mod. Removing it from an established save can therefore create missing content or other problems even if the base game starts.
Safer test setup
- Make a complete copy of the
storagefolder and label it with the date. - Use a new character when testing a large item, quest, biome, or progression mod.
- Prefer a separate copy of the game for risky experiments, while remembering that Workshop content still requires a Steam launch context.
- Do not overwrite the backup with a later test state.
If a mod has already supplied content to a character or universe, restore the backup before attempting a removal that the mod’s documentation does not support.
Choose the next fix from the evidence
When several explanations are plausible, rank them using five questions rather than changing everything at once.

Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder
Relaunching before saving the log
Because the log rotates on restart, the launch that contained the useful error can disappear. Copy it first.
Changing several variables at once
Moving folders, updating multiple mods, and deleting files together may make the symptom change without revealing the cause. Make one controlled change, reproduce once, and capture the result.
Testing Workshop content from the executable
A direct win32 or win64 launch does not load Workshop mods correctly. Use Steam for every Workshop test.
Assuming a visible subscription means a finished download
Steam may still be downloading or updating the files. Wait for the client to finish before judging whether the mod loads.
Deleting a content mod from a live save
A clean startup does not prove that an existing character or universe is safe without the mod. Preserve the storage backup and use a new character for the first test.

A complete recovery checklist
- Write down the exact symptom and the action that triggers it.
- Back up the
storagefolder. - Launch Starbound from Steam, not directly from
starbound.exe. - Confirm Workshop downloads are complete and subscriptions are active.
- Check the manual mod’s location and remove any accidental extra nesting level.
- Reproduce the issue once.
- Copy the current
storage/starbound.logbefore launching again. - Search for
Error,Exception,Could not apply patch,LuaException, missing assets, and mod identifiers. - Check every
requiresentry and any stated priority. - Disable all mods and verify that vanilla Starbound starts.
- Re-enable mods individually, or use a half-split for a large collection.
- After a game update, update the mod and its dependencies before testing again.
- Use a new character or separate copy for substantial content mods.
This process produces a reproducible result: either the vanilla game fails, a specific mod fails alone, or a particular combination fails because of a dependency or overwrite conflict. That distinction tells you whether to repair the installation, correct the load order, update the mod, or contact its developer with the relevant log excerpt.
