Puppeteer: Wait for a Canvas Chart to Finish Rendering Before a Screenshot

A canvas in the DOM is not proof its chart is ready. Wait for an application-specific render signal with Puppeteer’s waitForFunction(), then take the screenshot.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Use page.waitForFunction() to wait for a signal that your application defines as “chart ready,” then call page.screenshot(). A canvas appearing in the DOM—or navigation reaching network idle—does not prove that a chart’s pixels have finished drawing.

Wait for the chart’s own readiness signal

waitForFunction() repeatedly evaluates a function in the page context and resolves when the function returns a truthy value. Make that function check both that the target canvas exists and that an app-owned or chart-library signal says rendering is complete.

await page.waitForFunction(() => {
  const canvas = document.querySelector('#chart canvas');
  return canvas && window.chartReady === true;
}, { timeout: 30_000 });

await page.screenshot({ path: 'chart.png' });

This is a pattern to adapt, not a tested integration for a particular chart library. Replace #chart canvas and window.chartReady with the selector and readiness signal your application actually provides. The title does not identify a chart library, so there is no universal library callback to prescribe.

The check should become true only after the chart has finished the work that matters to your capture—for example, after its data is available and its render-complete callback has run. If your app owns the page, expose a small ready flag at that point. If a chart integration offers a documented completion event, have the app set the flag from that event rather than guessing based on elapsed time.

Why element and navigation waits can still capture a blank chart

A selector wait checks the element, not its pixels

page.waitForSelector() is appropriate when you need to know that a matching DOM element exists or, with the visibility option, is visible. It does not inspect whether a canvas has been drawn. Use it for DOM readiness, not as proof of completed chart rendering. See Puppeteer’s Page.waitForSelector() API.

Network idle is not chart completion

Puppeteer’s screenshot guide shows navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2' before taking a screenshot. That can be a useful navigation condition, but asynchronous chart drawing can continue after the network has become quiet. Add an application-specific readiness check for the chart. See the Puppeteer screenshots guide.

Locator stability is an interaction check

Puppeteer Locators wait for interaction preconditions, including a stable bounding box across two animation frames for relevant actions. That helps with actions such as clicking; it is not a general signal that a canvas chart has completed rendering. See the Puppeteer page interactions guide.

Choose polling and timeout deliberately

waitForFunction() supports configurable polling and timeout options. Its documented default timeout is 30 seconds; setting the timeout to zero disables it. Prefer a finite timeout so a missing or never-set readiness signal fails clearly instead of leaving automation waiting indefinitely. Check the documentation for the Puppeteer version installed in your project: current API and guide pages identify version 25.12.0, while the wait-function options page identifies version 25.3.0.

The requestAnimationFrame polling mode checks frequently and is documented as suitable for observing styling changes. It can make sense when the readiness predicate depends on frame-by-frame page state, but it cannot make an inaccurate predicate reliable. Choose the predicate first; polling only determines how it is checked. Refer to the Page.waitForFunction() API and its options.

Troubleshoot blank or partial chart screenshots

  • The wait resolves immediately, but the chart is blank: the predicate is true too early. Tie the ready flag to the chart’s actual completion signal, not merely canvas creation or a broad page condition.
  • The wait times out: check that the selector matches the rendered page, that the readiness property is set in the page context, and that the chart can reach its completion state. Keep a finite timeout and report a useful failure from the surrounding automation.
  • The screenshot is partial despite network idle: network quiet is not evidence that asynchronous drawing is finished. Wait for the chart-specific signal before capturing.
  • The chart is ready but the screenshot still omits it: verify that the screenshot is taken after the awaited promise resolves and that the selector and readiness condition refer to the same chart instance.
  • You are using a different Puppeteer version: confirm the supported option names and defaults against that installed version’s API documentation.

For a one-request screenshot, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF. Its cleanup removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step configurable. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; response headers say which page verdict and billing status applied. It also provides an MCP server with screenshot tools for AI agents. The API captures pages, but it does not replace an app-specific readiness signal when you must verify that a particular asynchronous chart has finished rendering.
