First confirm which browser binary Puppeteer actually launches, then compare its version with the browser supported by your installed Puppeteer release. The most reliable fix is to use Puppeteer’s bundled browser; if you manage Chrome yourself, pin a compatible version and point Puppeteer to that executable deliberately.
1. Verify Puppeteer and the browser it launches
A screenshot failure alone does not prove a Chrome-version mismatch. Start by checking the installed Puppeteer version, the configured executable path, and the version of the binary at that path.

Check the installed package
From the project directory, run:
npm ls puppeteer puppeteer-core
This shows which Puppeteer packages are present in the dependency tree. If the project uses a lockfile, check that it is installed from the same lockfile in local development and CI.

Search the screenshot script and its configuration for executablePath. Also check environment variables, container setup, and launch wrappers: any of these may make Puppeteer use a system Chrome or Chromium instead of the browser installed for the package.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Log the path you pass to Puppeteer and inspect that executable directly. For Chrome or Chromium builds that support it, run /path/to/chrome --version. Do not assume that the browser on your interactive machine is the one a CI job or container launches.
2. Match the browser to your Puppeteer release
Use Puppeteer’s official supported-browser table to find the browser version associated with the exact Puppeteer version installed in the project. It maps Puppeteer releases to Chrome for Testing versions. If your exact Puppeteer version is not listed, the documentation says to use the browser listed for the immediately prior Puppeteer version.

Since Puppeteer v20.0.0, Puppeteer downloads and works with Chrome for Testing; earlier releases used Chromium. The table’s current documentation version is identified as Puppeteer 25.12.0, paired there with Chrome for Testing 154.0.8037.57. That pair describes that specific release and is not a universal fix: choose the row for your project’s installed version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPuppeteer explains why the mapping matters: “Every Puppeteer release is tightly bundled with a specific browser release to ensure compatibility with the implementation of the underlying protocols, the Chrome DevTools Protocol and WebDriver BiDi.” The quote is from the Puppeteer FAQ. A mismatch can surface when screenshot-related work exercises browser protocol operations, but supported versions do not rule out unrelated launch or environment errors.

3. Choose a consistent installation strategy
| Approach | Compatibility | Control and maintenance |
|---|---|---|
| Use the browser installed for Puppeteer | Puppeteer’s API guarantees compatibility with its bundled browser. | Less direct control over the system browser; keep package installation and browser download/cache behavior working. |
Manage Chrome or Chromium yourself and set executablePath |
You must select a browser version supported by the installed Puppeteer release. An arbitrary path is not guaranteed to work. | Direct control of the binary, but you must deliberately pin and update both versions and verify the path. |
The API documents executablePath, but says it is only guaranteed to work with the bundled browser. Treat a custom path as a compatibility risk, not as proof that the versions are compatible. See the launch options API documentation.
4. Apply the fix and make it repeatable
Use Puppeteer’s installed browser
- Remove a custom
executablePathfrom the launch options unless the project specifically needs a separately managed browser. - Install the project’s locked Puppeteer dependency using the package manager and lockfile used by the project.
- Allow Puppeteer’s browser installation and cache behavior to complete in the build environment. Check that the runtime user can access the installed browser and cache.
- Run the screenshot script and log the Puppeteer version and actual browser executable during diagnosis.
Pin a separately managed browser
- Choose the browser version from the supported-browser table for the Puppeteer release you intend to keep.
- Install that exact Chrome for Testing version with Puppeteer’s browser manager, or use a fixed browser image/version in your build.
- Set
executablePathto the installed binary, not a generic path that may resolve differently across machines. - Verify the binary’s reported version in the same environment where the screenshot runs.
- Update Puppeteer and the browser as a reviewed pair, then rerun the capture in local development, CI, and any container image that ships the script.
Puppeteer’s browser management documentation describes installing Chrome for Testing by stable channel or explicit version, and listing installed browsers. A stable channel moves over time; pin an explicit version when repeatable builds matter. Record the selected pair in the build configuration so an image rebuild does not silently change the browser.

5. Troubleshoot errors that resemble version mismatches
Once the launched executable is confirmed to match the supported mapping, stop treating the failure as a version issue and check the relevant installation or runtime condition.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Symptom or check | Likely distinction | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The browser version differs from the supported table row | A custom executable, system package, or stale container image may be overriding Puppeteer’s browser. | Remove the override or install and select the mapped browser version; verify the resolved executable again. |
| Executable path does not exist or browser cannot be found | The browser may not have been installed, the cache may be elsewhere, or the configured path may be wrong. | Use Puppeteer’s browser installation workflow, inspect the configured cache/path, and ensure the runtime user can read and execute the binary. |
| Browser starts locally but not in CI or a container | The build may omit browser files or required system dependencies, or use a different user or filesystem path. | Check the CI/container image, browser installation step, permissions, and system dependencies in that same runtime environment. |
| Versions match, but launch or capture still fails | The error may be caused by launch flags, environment constraints, page behavior, or another runtime issue rather than compatibility. | Use the error message and Puppeteer’s official troubleshooting guide to investigate installation, cache/executable paths, system dependencies, and launch environment separately. |
6. Or skip the browser setup
If the goal is a screenshot rather than operating a local browser, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF; its clean-shot flow accepts cookie/consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools: take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
Install the Python package requests, set your API key, and run this one-call example:
