How to Capture a Webpage After It Finishes Loading in Urlbox

Use Urlbox’s wait_until setting for a general ready signal, then add an element wait or delay when the page needs more time.

In Urlbox, set wait_until to choose the page-ready signal, then add a selector wait or a fixed delay if the site needs more time. For pages whose readiness depends on a specific element, use wait_for; for a spinner that must disappear, use wait_to_leave.

Choose the right page-ready condition

Urlbox’s wait_until option controls which browser or network condition Urlbox waits for before capturing. Its documented default is loaded, which waits for the page’s load event. That is a useful starting point, but it does not guarantee that a JavaScript application has finished rendering its own content.

Value What it waits for When it may fit
domloaded The DOMContentLoaded event. When the needed document structure is available and you do not need to wait for all page resources.
loaded The browser’s load event; this is the documented default. A general starting point when the page’s load event is a reasonable readiness signal.
mostrequestsfinished A network-settling condition based on remaining connections and how long they remain. When network activity is a better signal than a browser event; check the Urlbox options documentation for its precise behavior.
requestsfinished A network-settling condition based on remaining connections and how long they remain. When the page’s requests finishing is the relevant signal; check the documentation before choosing between the two network modes.

The exact network thresholds are defined by Urlbox’s Render Options documentation. Actual wait duration varies with the target page; no single setting guarantees that every site’s application content is ready.

Wait for a page element or spinner

Wait for content to appear

Use wait_for when a particular element indicates that the page is ready—for example, the main article on a news page. The selector must appear in the DOM. Set wait_for_state to choose whether the element must be visible or only attached to the DOM.

Wait for a loading indicator to disappear

Use wait_to_leave with a selector for a spinner or other loading indicator. Both selector waits use wait_timeout. By default, if the condition is not met before the timeout, capture proceeds. If that would produce an unusable image, use the documented failure options so a missed condition fails the request instead of silently continuing. See Urlbox’s options documentation for the applicable option names and behavior.

Combine a page-ready signal with an element wait

This JSON illustrates the documented option names for a page that should reach the load event and then contain its main article. It is an example configuration, not a tested request; adapt the URL, selector, and timeout to the target page.

{
  "url": "https://example.com",
  "wait_until": "loaded",
  "wait_for": "main article",
  "wait_timeout": 30000
}

Choose the selector based on the site’s actual markup. A broad selector may match before the useful content is ready; a narrowly chosen content element gives a more meaningful readiness signal.

Add a fixed delay only when needed

delay adds a fixed wait in milliseconds before capture, after the selected readiness condition. Its documented default is zero. Use it for a known post-load pause, such as a short animation or a delayed client-side update. A fixed pause is less responsive than waiting for a specific element: it may waste time on fast pages and still be too short on slow ones.

Account for full-page capture

For full-page screenshots, Urlbox normally scrolls down the page before capture so lazy-loaded elements can load and the final scrollable height can be measured. Setting skip_scroll=true disables this behavior. If a full-page image omits content that loads only on scroll, do not disable scrolling; if scrolling triggers unwanted page behavior, consider whether disabling it is appropriate.

Set readiness options in the Urlbox CLI

The CLI provides --wait-until and --delay controls. Explicit flags or JSON options override presets. Use the syntax and supported values shown in the Urlbox CLI documentation for your installed CLI version; the available material establishes these controls but not a complete command line or installation procedure.

Troubleshoot captures that are too early or fail

  • The screenshot misses content, but the request succeeds: the chosen browser event may occur before the application renders the content. Wait for a meaningful selector with wait_for, or use a brief delay if the extra wait is predictable.
  • The spinner remains in the screenshot: wait for its selector to leave with wait_to_leave. If the selector is wrong or the spinner never disappears, the default timeout behavior may continue to capture; configure failure behavior when continuing is unacceptable.
  • The selector wait expires: confirm that the CSS selector matches the page and that the desired state is correct—visible versus merely attached. Increase wait_timeout only if the element genuinely needs longer to appear.
  • A full-page capture misses lazy content: Urlbox’s default scroll-before-capture behavior is intended to trigger lazy loading. Check whether skip_scroll=true has disabled it.
  • Captures take longer than expected: network-settling conditions, selector waits, and fixed delays can all extend the wait. Use the narrowest readiness condition that reflects the content you need; actual timing depends on the page.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API, so you do not need to configure browser readiness options yourself. Its capture flow removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. It also provides an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF tools for AI agents.
