Neither Puppeteer nor Cypress is a complete visual-regression system by itself. Both can capture screenshots; Cypress explicitly relies on a plugin or hosted service to compare them with approved baselines. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide documents page and element capture, while leaving baseline comparison and review to the workflow you build around it. Choose based on your existing test architecture and who should own rendering, baselines, and review—not on an unsupported claim that one produces more accurate screenshots.
What visual regression testing requires
A visual test drives an application into a known state, captures a page or component image, compares that image with an approved baseline, and reviews any differences. A screenshot alone is only the capture step. Unlike a functional assertion that checks behavior or a particular CSS property, an image comparison can reveal unexpected visual changes across the rendered interface. See Cypress’s visual testing guide for this distinction and workflow.

- Set up a predictable page state, such as a signed-in view or open modal.
- Capture the whole page or a meaningful element.
- Compare the result with a baseline using a comparison layer.
- Review differences and decide whether to approve a new baseline or fix a regression.
How Puppeteer and Cypress differ
| Decision area | Puppeteer | Cypress |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshot capture | The official guide documents page screenshots with Page.screenshot() and element screenshots with ElementHandle.screenshot(). Puppeteer screenshots |
cy.screenshot() captures the app. Cypress also captures screenshots on test failures during cypress run by default. Cypress screenshot guide |
| Image comparison | The reviewed screenshot guide documents capture, not an integrated baseline comparison and review workflow. | Cypress says comparison is added through plugins or hosted services; capture alone does not perform visual regression comparison. Cypress visual testing |
| Test workflow | A browser automation API around which your team can construct a capture and comparison pipeline. | Capture can run within existing end-to-end or component tests, after those tests drive the app into the relevant state. |
| Baseline and review ownership | Choose and operate a separate comparison layer for storing and reviewing images. | Local plugins generally leave storage, updates, and review to your team; hosted services manage more of that workflow. |
| Rendering coverage | Depends on your automation and comparison setup. | Local runs cover configured environments; hosted providers may offer cross-browser and viewport rendering, depending on provider. |
Does Cypress do visual regression testing?
Cypress provides screenshot capture and the test workflow to establish the state worth checking, but its core does not compare screenshots against baselines. Add a comparison plugin or service for that step. The Cypress visual testing guide lists open-source options such as Cypress Image Diff, Cypress Image Snapshot, Cypress Visual Regression, and Visual Regression Diff, as well as hosted offerings. Plugin maintenance and compatibility can change; check the Cypress plugins directory and the individual project’s current compatibility information before adopting one.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLocal comparison
A local plugin can fit a team that wants to keep comparison and baseline ownership in its own test pipeline. Plan how to store approved images, review diffs, and update baselines deliberately; those responsibilities do not disappear because capture runs in Cypress.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call

Hosted comparison and review
A hosted service can manage more of the baseline and review workflow and may provide browser or viewport coverage, depending on the provider. Cypress names Applitools Eyes, Argos, Chromatic, Happo, LambdaTest SmartUI, Percy, Sauce Labs Visual, SmartBear VisualTest, and Wopee.io as examples. Their current features, availability, browser coverage, and pricing vary; check each provider’s own current documentation before choosing.
How to capture screenshots with each tool
Puppeteer: page and element screenshots
The following CommonJS example opens a page, waits for a visible heading, and saves a full-page PNG. Install Puppeteer in your project first with npm install puppeteer. The screenshot API and options are documented in the Puppeteer screenshot guide.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
await page.waitForSelector('h1');
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
const heading = await page.$('h1');
if (!heading) throw new Error('Expected h1 was not found');
await heading.screenshot({ path: 'heading.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
This writes images; it does not establish or compare a baseline. Add a separate image-diff layer and a review process if you want regression detection.

This Cypress command captures an image; it does not compare the image with a baseline. Wire in a maintained plugin or service for that comparison step. Cypress documents capture behavior, including failure screenshots, in its screenshot and video guide.
Make screenshots stable enough to compare
Differences can come from the rendering environment rather than a code change. Cypress’s guidance notes that operating system, browser version, fonts, display scaling, viewport, app data, timing, and animation can all affect the output. These controls are useful for either tool:

- Wait for the intended state. Assert that expected data and UI are present before capture; do not rely on an arbitrary short delay when a meaningful readiness check is available.
- Control animation. Disable or finish animations in the test environment where possible. Cypress notes that action-command animation settings do not stop unrelated page animations from appearing mid-snapshot.
- Pin the rendering setup. For local pixel comparisons, capture and compare in the same environment, fix the viewport, and pin browser versions where practical.
- Make data repeatable. Freeze time for date-dependent content and use fixtures or network stubbing to keep API responses consistent.
- Mask narrowly. Mask only small unavoidable dynamic areas rather than loosening a comparison threshold across an entire page.
- Choose useful checkpoints. Cover important pages, shared components, and meaningful states. An element-level image can be easier to review when a full-page diff contains unrelated noise.
These controls reduce avoidable variability; they do not guarantee identical output across different rendering environments.

- Choose Cypress when Cypress already drives your end-to-end or component tests and you want capture to occur after those tests establish a state. Decide separately whether local baseline management or hosted review suits your team.
- Choose Puppeteer when its browser automation API fits your existing automation and you are prepared to select and operate a separate comparison and review layer.
- In either case, make the rendering environment deterministic and decide who approves baseline changes. The documentation does not establish a universal winner for accuracy or speed.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a clean website screenshot rather than a test-run baseline comparison, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: one API request returns a screenshot or PDF, and it can remove cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Its response identifies page verdict and billing status; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents. The API is not a replacement for a baseline comparison and review workflow.
