You can use FFmpeg on a Mac mini to send a file, camera feed, or other supported input to YouTube Live, but uninterrupted 24/7 operation depends on your exact source, FFmpeg build, output settings, network, and recovery setup. YouTube provides the ingest URL and stream key; FFmpeg reads and optionally encodes your input, then sends it to YouTube. Treat the instructions below as a configuration and test plan, not a Mac mini recipe proven for every workload.
What you need before you start
- A Mac mini that can stay powered on and connected to a stable internet connection. No particular current Mac mini model is established as suitable for every 24/7 workload.
- An FFmpeg build appropriate for your input and processing needs. Available encoders depend on how the build was configured; check the installed build rather than assuming a specific encoder is present. FFmpeg documents its input, filter, encoding, and output capabilities at FFmpeg Documentation and FFmpeg Documentation (all).
- A YouTube channel that can start a live stream, plus the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room.
- A source to stream: for example, a media file or camera feed. The input and FFmpeg options differ by source; a command for a file is not automatically suitable for a camera or network stream.
A November 2021 FFmpeg mailing-list post describes an attempted camera-to-YouTube workflow on an M1 Mac mini, but it does not establish reliable operation or performance on current models. See the M1 Mac mini RTSP-to-YouTube discussion as an example of an attempt, not a tested guide. A separate Raspberry Pi relay anecdote is not evidence of Mac mini performance.

Get YouTube’s stream URL and key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Create or select the live stream, then locate its stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key supplied there. YouTube’s instructions are in Manage live stream settings.
- Use RTMPS when the endpoint and your FFmpeg setup support it. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection; see Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
Handle the stream key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not publish it in a command screenshot, log, or shared script. If it is exposed, an authorized channel owner or manager can reset it in the stream settings.
Choose how FFmpeg handles the input
Copy compatible media without re-encoding
If the input’s video and audio codecs, container handling, and timing already suit YouTube’s ingest requirements, FFmpeg may be able to relay the streams without decoding and re-encoding them. This avoids the extra processing involved in a transcode, but it is only appropriate when the source is compatible and does not need filters or format changes. Validate the actual file or feed rather than assuming compatibility.

Decode, filter, or encode when needed
If you need to resize, change frame rate, add filters, alter audio, or use a codec different from the input, FFmpeg must process the media accordingly. Encoding choices affect processing load, and the result depends on the source, selected settings, and installed build. FFmpeg documents VideoToolbox as a hardware-acceleration option, but its availability and behavior should be checked on your Mac and in your installed build. Do not assume that hardware encoding is present or that a given Mac mini will handle a particular workload continuously.
Set up looping for a file source
For a pre-recorded file, configure FFmpeg to read the intended source repeatedly if you want a continuous loop. The correct input and looping options depend on the file and desired behavior; consult the FFmpeg documentation for the installed version. For a camera, RTSP feed, or other live input, use that source’s input method instead of file-looping options. There is no single source command that fits all these cases.

Match YouTube’s encoder settings
Use YouTube’s current guidance as the target for the outgoing feed. The recommendations below are YouTube-published settings, not independent performance measurements. Check the full, current table at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before configuring your encoder.
| Setting | Guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption. | Use the server URL provided for the stream and confirm that your FFmpeg output supports the selected endpoint. |
| Video codec | YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1. | Confirm the encoder is available in your FFmpeg build and that the chosen output settings are accepted for your stream. |
| Frame rate | YouTube guidance supports up to 60 fps. | Match the source and intended output; higher frame rates can require more processing and upload capacity. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3. | Check that audio is present, intelligible, and synchronized in the live preview. |
| Rate control | CBR is recommended. | Set a constant bitrate appropriate to the codec, resolution, and frame rate. |
| Keyframe interval | Recommended 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. | Set the interval in the encoder and verify the resulting output. |
H.264 bitrate examples for 1080p
YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate range is 5–14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6–17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection or Mac mini can sustain the stream. The applicable range changes with codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult YouTube’s encoder guidance for other combinations.

Your sustained upload capacity must accommodate the outgoing stream, with room for normal variation and other network use. Test the complete stream at the intended settings and monitor YouTube’s stream health rather than treating a successful launch as proof of stable operation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test before depending on a 24/7 run
- Run the actual input you intend to use, including the full file loop or camera/network source.
- Use the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, and keyframe interval. Confirm that the stream appears in YouTube Live Control Room and that the preview has both picture and sound.
- Let the setup run long enough to observe the actual workload. Check for dropped frames, audio problems, changing stream health, or a process that exits.
- Test the recovery behavior you will rely on. Check what happens after the network drops, the input disappears, or FFmpeg stops; arrange an appropriate way to notice and restart failures if continuous operation matters.
- Keep a local recording if you need a copy of the stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its advice is to record locally as a backup. See Archive live streams.
A 24/7 channel also needs content rights, not just a working encoder. Use media you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright rules. A technically healthy stream does not guarantee that the content is eligible for monetization or exempt from reused-content policies.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Recheck the server URL and stream key in Live Control Room, confirm the stream is live and configured, and verify that the FFmpeg output is using the intended RTMP or RTMPS endpoint. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
- The connection starts but stream health is poor: Check sustained upload capacity, bitrate, and network stability. Test at the intended settings and compare the output with YouTube’s recommendations.
- Video is missing, unsupported, or incorrect: Confirm the input is being read and that the selected copy-versus-encode path produces a codec, resolution, and frame rate suitable for the stream. Check encoder availability in the installed FFmpeg build.
- Audio is missing or out of sync: Confirm that the input contains the expected audio stream, that FFmpeg is passing or encoding it, and that the output uses a supported audio codec. Listen in YouTube’s preview.
- The stream stops after an error: Determine whether the source, network, or FFmpeg process ended. A long-running setup needs monitoring and a recovery plan; do not assume that a process will restart itself.
- The YouTube archive is absent or incomplete: If the stream exceeded 12 hours, YouTube says it may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording when preservation matters.
