To keep captions available, caption and review each recorded lesson as its own YouTube video, and provide a separate caption feed if captions must appear in the continuous live output. YouTube’s live automatic captions do not remain on the live video after it ends, and a 24/7 stream also runs beyond YouTube’s 12-hour thresholds for DVR and archive reliability. Keep a local recording if preserving the full program matters.

Why captions disappear from a live replay

YouTube’s live automatic captions are temporary: after a live stream ends, they do not remain on the video. YouTube processes captions for the resulting video separately, and those post-stream captions may differ from what viewers saw live. Live automatic captions are currently English-only and depend on channel eligibility and streaming configuration. They are not a durable caption track for either the live broadcast or its archive. YouTube’s automatic-caption guidance explains these limits.

For recorded lessons, distinguish two jobs: making captions available on each source lesson, and sending captions with the continuous live output. A caption track on a lesson should not be assumed to become a selectable caption track for the resulting 24/7 live archive.

Caption each lesson before adding it to the stream

  1. Prepare a timed caption file where possible. Check that it matches the lesson’s spoken language and timing.
  2. Upload or create captions in YouTube Studio. YouTube supports caption-file uploads, auto-sync from a transcript, and manual caption entry. Use the workflow that fits the material and available transcript.
  3. Review the result against the actual recording. YouTube cautions that automatic speech recognition can misrepresent speech, including because of accents, dialects, mispronunciations, or background noise. Correct names, specialist terms, and timing rather than publishing an unchecked transcript.
  4. Confirm the track is available to viewers. Viewers can turn captions on and adjust display settings, but they can only select a track that exists and is available for that video. See YouTube’s instructions for adding captions to uploaded videos.

When the live output itself needs captions

If viewers need captions while the continuous broadcast is live, YouTube requires captions to be sent to the stream. The documented options are embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions from the encoder or supported caption software that sends captions over HTTP. YouTube describes the delivery methods in its live caption requirements.

Method What it involves Important constraint
Embedded 608/708 captions Configure the encoder to carry captions in the outgoing video stream. The standards support up to four language tracks, but YouTube currently supports one caption track for this method.
Caption software over HTTP Use supported caption software or a service to send captions to YouTube’s caption ingestion endpoint. Each stream entry point can have one caption feed. Check that the software or provider supports your exact setup and language.

Neither delivery method removes the need to manage timing. With a rotating lesson playlist, the caption feed must match the audio and timing of whichever lesson is playing. YouTube documents the delivery mechanisms, but does not prescribe a turnkey way to keep a feed synchronized across playlist transitions. Confirm current encoder or provider compatibility and terms before choosing a setup; pricing and comparative performance are not established here.

Test transitions and plan for long-running streams

  1. Check a complete lesson transition. Verify caption language, alignment, and readability near the end of one lesson and the beginning of the next from the viewer’s YouTube player. Treat this as a production check, not a platform guarantee.
  2. Keep a local recording if the full program matters. YouTube says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. See its guidance on archiving live streams and DVR on live streams.
  3. Consider shorter scheduled sessions if YouTube’s replay or DVR is essential. This is an operational option based on YouTube’s stated thresholds, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee that shorter sessions will meet every archive need.

Troubleshooting caption problems

  • Captions appeared live but disappeared from the replay: live automatic captions are not retained after the stream ends. Add and review captions for the resulting video through YouTube’s VOD caption workflow, and keep lesson-level caption tracks on the source videos.
  • No live captions are visible: confirm that a caption feed is being sent to YouTube. A source lesson’s selectable caption track is not, by itself, the documented live-caption feed.
  • Captions drift or show the wrong lesson’s words: check that the feed corresponds to the currently playing lesson and that timing resets or changes correctly at transitions. Test the transition from a viewer’s perspective.
  • Captions are inaccurate: review the lesson transcript and correct speech-recognition errors, especially names, technical vocabulary, and words affected by accents or background noise.
  • The stream replay or DVR is incomplete: check whether the continuous session exceeded 12 hours. Maintain a local recording rather than relying solely on YouTube to capture a long stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

For the continuous prerecorded YouTube stream itself, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud: upload the lessons, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. The captions still need to be prepared for the lessons and, if required in the live output, delivered through an appropriate caption feed; a cloud looping service is not a substitute for captioning.

StreamNeo streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start a free StreamNeo day.
