To take screenshots with Puppeteer on a Raspberry Pi, use Chromium installed for the Raspberry Pi OS image and give Puppeteer the browser’s actual executable path. First confirm the Pi’s CPU architecture, OS release, Node.js version and Chromium version: there is no single verified path or install command that applies to every Pi and Raspberry Pi OS release. The software setup described here is not India-specific; the consulted technical documentation does not identify different steps for users in India.
Choose how Puppeteer will manage Chromium
Puppeteer’s standard puppeteer package normally downloads a compatible browser during installation. Alternatively, you can use Chromium supplied by Raspberry Pi OS and configure Puppeteer to launch that executable. The third option, puppeteer-core, omits the browser download and leaves browser installation and launch configuration to you.

| Route | Browser management | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
puppeteer with its downloaded browser |
Puppeteer manages the browser download. | Convenient when its browser build is available for the Pi’s OS and architecture. Confirm compatibility instead of assuming it. |
puppeteer with Raspberry Pi OS Chromium |
You install or use the OS-provided Chromium and set executablePath. |
Uses the distribution’s browser, but you must check the path and whether its version works with your Puppeteer release. |
puppeteer-core with a managed browser |
You install Chromium and configure the launch yourself. | Offers direct control, while leaving browser versions, paths and system dependencies to you. |
Raspberry Pi documents Chromium as the default browser on new Raspberry Pi OS installations. Arm recommends installing Chromium through the distribution package manager on Arm Linux. Neither statement establishes one package command or executable path for every Raspberry Pi OS image. Raspberry Pi computer documentation · Arm’s Chromium guide
Check the Pi before installing
- Record the hardware and OS: note the Raspberry Pi model, Raspberry Pi OS release, and whether the installed OS is 32-bit or 64-bit. Choose software for that actual architecture; an x64 browser download is not an Arm browser.
- Check Node.js against your Puppeteer version: the current Puppeteer system-requirements page lists Node.js 22.12 or later. Check the requirements for the release you intend to install, since requirements can change.
- Check the browser target: Puppeteer’s current requirements describe Chrome for Testing on Debian/Ubuntu Linux x64 and arm64. This does not certify every Raspberry Pi OS version, older 32-bit image or Pi-model combination.
- Decide who installs the browser: use
puppeteerif its managed browser is suitable for your image; use OS Chromium orpuppeteer-coreif you want to manage the browser yourself.
See Puppeteer’s system requirements for the current Node and platform information. An ARM Linux browser platform in Puppeteer’s browser API is not a guarantee of support for every 32-bit Pi installation. Puppeteer browser API

Find the installed Chromium executable
Do not copy an executable path from a tutorial for another Pi or OS image. Check the browser command available on your own installation and resolve it to a path:
command -v chromium || command -v chromium-browser
If a command is returned, check that the file exists and is executable:
ls -l "$(command -v chromium || command -v chromium-browser)"
If neither command returns a path, Chromium may not be installed or may use a different command name on that image. Install the browser through the package manager for your Raspberry Pi OS release, then check again. These checks identify a command on the current system; they do not establish a universal Raspberry Pi OS path.

Puppeteer supports selecting an installed browser with the executablePath launch option. Its installation documentation does not prescribe one Raspberry Pi OS path for every release. Puppeteer installation guide
Install Puppeteer and capture a page
For an OS-provided Chromium, create a Node project and install Puppeteer. This example uses an environment variable for the browser path so the script does not assume a particular Pi image:
mkdir pi-screenshot && cd pi-screenshot
npm init -y
npm install puppeteer
Set CHROMIUM_PATH to the executable you verified, then create screenshot.js:

- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const executablePath = process.env.CHROMIUM_PATH;
if (!executablePath) {
throw new Error('Set CHROMIUM_PATH to the verified Chromium executable');
}
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
executablePath,
headless: true,
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
timeout: 60000,
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})().catch((error) => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
Run it using the path found on your Pi. Replace the sample URL with the page you want to capture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCHROMIUM_PATH="$(command -v chromium || command -v chromium-browser)" node screenshot.js
If your project uses ECMAScript modules rather than CommonJS, adapt the import syntax to its configuration; the browser selection and capture options are the same. For Puppeteer’s managed browser instead, omit executablePath and let Puppeteer launch the browser it installed, provided that browser is available for your image and architecture.
Keep browser installation and versions aligned
Puppeteer’s downloaded browser is paired with its release, while a distribution Chromium package can update on a different schedule. Check Puppeteer’s supported-browser mapping when upgrading either one; an installed executable can still fail to launch if its version is incompatible. Puppeteer supported browsers

If installation scripts are blocked by a package manager or deployment environment, Puppeteer warns that its expected browser may not have been downloaded. The documented manual installation command is:
npx puppeteer browsers install
This installs Puppeteer’s managed browser; it is not a command for selecting the OS Chromium package. Puppeteer installation guide

Troubleshoot launch and screenshot failures
- “Could not find Chrome” or browser executable not found: confirm the command exists with
command -v, setCHROMIUM_PATHto that verified executable, and ensure the launch options use the same path. - Browser fails immediately or reports a shared-library error: the browser may depend on a missing Linux library. Puppeteer recommends inspecting dependencies with
lddand reviewing its Linux troubleshooting guidance. Use the dependency list as diagnostic guidance, not as a verified one-line Raspberry Pi OS installation command; package names and availability vary. Puppeteer troubleshooting - Browser launches but exits or behaves unexpectedly after an update: compare the installed Chromium version with the version supported by your Puppeteer release. Update or select a compatible browser using the appropriate management route.
- Installation finishes without a Puppeteer-managed browser: determine whether install scripts were suppressed. If so, run Puppeteer’s documented
npx puppeteer browsers installcommand, or deliberately configure the separately installed Chromium executable. - Navigation times out: distinguish a slow or unreachable target page from a browser launch problem. The example allows up to 60 seconds for navigation; a page that remains active may not satisfy
networkidle2, so select a wait condition that matches the page and the result you need.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need screenshots without maintaining Chromium and its Linux dependencies on the Pi, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns an image or PDF; this cURL example saves a WebP screenshot:
