Set the viewport before navigation, scroll the page (or the relevant scroll container) to trigger lazy loading, wait until the images you need have loaded, then capture. fullPage: true captures beyond the viewport, but does not itself guarantee that off-screen images are requested.
Why lazy-loaded images are missing
A screenshot records the page as it is rendered at capture time. Many pages defer image requests until an image approaches the viewport, so images farther down the page may not have loaded when Puppeteer takes the screenshot. A navigation signal such as networkidle2 can help indicate that activity has settled, but it does not prove every off-screen image was requested.

Puppeteer’s screenshot guide documents navigation followed by a screenshot, and notes that an element screenshot scrolls the element into view when it is hidden. Its fullPage option controls capture extent; it is not documented as a lazy-loading trigger. See the screenshot guide and screenshot options.
Reliable baseline: scroll, wait, capture
Set the viewport before navigating, scroll through the page to trigger viewport-dependent loading, wait for the relevant images to finish successfully, return to the top if needed, and capture. This example is a starting pattern, not a guarantee for every site; adapt the scroll behavior and readiness check to the page.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
const url = 'https://example.com';
try {
// Choose the same viewport you want the page to render for the shot.
await page.setViewport({ width: 1280, height: 900 });
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
// Scroll through ordinary document flow to trigger lazy loading.
await page.evaluate(async () => {
const step = Math.max(1, window.innerHeight);
for (let y = 0; y < document.body.scrollHeight; y += step) {
window.scrollTo(0, y);
await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 100));
}
window.scrollTo(0, 0);
});
// Require successful image loads; a broken image should not wait forever.
await page.waitForFunction(
() => [...document.images].every(img => img.complete && img.naturalWidth > 0),
{ timeout: 15000 }
);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
The 100 ms pause between scroll steps is only a trigger opportunity, not proof that an image is ready. The readiness condition and finite timeout do that separate job. The sample waits for every DOM img; if the page contains intentionally broken or optional images, narrow the predicate to the images required for your capture instead of letting an irrelevant failure block the screenshot.
Choose the right trigger and capture extent
| Capture goal | Trigger and capture | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Current viewport | Scroll the needed content into view, wait for its images, then capture the intended viewport. | Only the visible region is included unless you change the capture extent. |
| Full page | Trigger lazy loading across the page, verify image readiness, then use fullPage: true. |
fullPage expands the captured area; it does not force every site to load off-screen content. |
For a normal document that grows vertically, stepping down the page can work. For a particular image, scroll that element into view before checking it. Puppeteer’s interaction guide describes viewport checks and scrolling interactions that can trigger viewport-dependent behavior: page interactions.

Set the intended viewport before navigation. Puppeteer recommends this ordering because some viewport settings, including mobile or touch-related properties, can cause a page reload. See setViewport.

page.waitForFunction waits until a function evaluated in the page context returns a truthy value. Checking img.complete and img.naturalWidth > 0 is useful for ordinary <img> elements: the first indicates loading has completed, while the second helps distinguish a successful image from a failed request. Puppeteer documents the wait API at page.waitForFunction.

- Wait for specific images: select the image elements needed for the screenshot and check their completion and natural dimensions. This avoids blocking on unrelated images.
- Account for responsive images: inspect the selected
currentSrcifsrcsetchanges which asset is requested at your chosen viewport. - Use an application signal when available: a page-specific loading state may be more reliable than checking every image, particularly when the app inserts content asynchronously.
- Handle other rendering mechanisms: CSS background images, canvas, iframe content, and virtualized lists are not necessarily represented by
document.images. Their readiness needs a page-specific check.
When a relevant image can fail permanently, do not wait indefinitely for a success-only condition. Use a finite timeout and decide how your capture should respond to a failed required image—typically report the failure rather than silently treating it as loaded.
Nested scrollers and virtualized pages
The baseline loop scrolls the main document. It will not necessarily trigger images inside a nested element with its own scrollbar, and virtualized pages may remove earlier items from the DOM as new ones appear. Find the actual scrolling container and scroll it, or target the specific element you need. For virtualized content, a full-page screenshot may not contain items that are no longer mounted; capture the necessary regions or use the application’s own rendering mechanism.

There is no universal selector or scroll strategy without the target URL and page implementation. Inspect the page’s DOM and loading behavior to determine whether the image is an <img>, a CSS background, a placeholder replaced after scrolling, or content rendered inside another browsing context.

- Confirm the image exists. Check whether the expected element is present and whether it is an
<img>at all. A CSS background, canvas, iframe, or virtualized item needs a different inspection and readiness strategy. - Set the viewport before navigation. Match the dimensions needed for the screenshot, then navigate. Changing viewport-related settings later can alter responsive image selection or reload the page.
- Trigger the actual loading mechanism. Scroll the document, the nested scroll container, or the specific element into view. Merely finding an element in the DOM does not mean its image has been requested.
- Wait for successful readiness. Use a relevant image or application-state predicate with a timeout. Do not treat selector presence or network idle alone as proof the image is ready.
- Restore the desired position and capture. Use
fullPage: trueonly when the output should extend beyond the viewport; loading and capture extent are separate concerns. - Inspect failures if it remains absent. Check failed network requests, lazy-image data attributes, responsive
srcset, consent overlays, authentication requirements, nested scrolling, and app-level loading indicators.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its cleanup accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the result identified in response headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and output options.

Version and API notes
Puppeteer documentation search results identify version 25.12.0, but your project may use a different version. Check the installed dependency and consult the matching documentation if an API behaves differently. The sample assumes CommonJS and a Puppeteer installation in the project; it is not reported as tested against a live target page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does `waitUntil: ‘networkidle2’` guarantee lazy images have loaded?
No. It is a navigation activity signal, not proof that off-screen images were requested or rendered.
Does `fullPage: true` load images below the fold?
No. Trigger the page’s lazy-loading behavior and check the needed images separately; `fullPage` controls capture extent.
