If a Puppeteer screenshot looks different from Chrome, first make the comparison use the same browser build and mode, CSS viewport and device scale, screen dimensions, and screenshot options. Set the viewport before navigating, then compare the same page state. Changing CSS before checking those variables can mask the real difference.
Start by identifying which Chrome each screenshot uses
“Chrome” can mean a user-installed Chrome browser, Puppeteer’s bundled Chrome for Testing, regular headful Chrome, current headless Chrome, or the separate legacy headless shell. These are not automatically equivalent. Puppeteer says its headless: true mode uses current headless Chrome, while headless: 'shell' selects chrome-headless-shell, which does not completely match regular Chrome behavior. Puppeteer’s headless-mode guide explains the distinction.

Puppeteer v20 and later uses Chrome for Testing, and its headful and current-headless modes share a browser code path. Still, compare the actual browser versions instead of assuming the browser names imply identical builds. Check Puppeteer’s supported browser version mapping when pinning or upgrading.
- Record the Puppeteer package version and the browser version used for each image.
- Record whether the reference is headful Chrome, current headless Chrome, or legacy headless shell.
- For a controlled baseline, use Puppeteer’s bundled browser and
headless: true. If the reference is headful, make a separate comparison in headful mode.
Puppeteer permits selecting a Chrome channel or executable path, but its compatibility guarantee is for the bundled browser; see LaunchOptions. The old headless mode is now known as chrome-headless-shell and ships as a separate binary. Puppeteer: Headless mode.

Match the page viewport and device emulation before navigation
The page’s CSS viewport is separate from the outer browser window. Set width, height, and deviceScaleFactor explicitly before page.goto(), using the reference’s actual values rather than a convenient default. If the reference uses mobile emulation or touch, match isMobile and hasTouch too. Changing those properties can reload the page, so set them up front. See Page.setViewport().
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({
width: 1440, // Replace with the reference CSS viewport width
height: 900, // Replace with the reference CSS viewport height
deviceScaleFactor: 1, // Replace with the reference device scale
isMobile: false,
hasTouch: false,
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'puppeteer.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
This is a runnable starting point, not a universal 1440×900 recommendation. Replace the URL and dimensions with the exact test page and reference values. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide covers page screenshots and element captures.
Set browser screen size separately when the page depends on it
A page can inspect screen properties or respond to window geometry, so matching only the CSS viewport may not be enough. Puppeteer documents that headless mode uses a single 800×600 screen by default unless --window-size is supplied. The headless-only --screen-info option configures screen information. See Screen configuration.

const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
headless: true,
args: ['--window-size=1440,900'],
});
Use the reference’s window dimensions here; do not substitute this for page.setViewport(). A window-size flag controls browser geometry, while the viewport call sets the page’s emulated CSS viewport.
Make screenshot capture options identical
Two images can differ even when the page renders the same if one captures the viewport and the other captures the full page, a clip, or a different background or surface. Puppeteer’s documented screenshot defaults include fullPage: false, omitBackground: false, and fromSurface: true. Specify options explicitly when comparing; see ScreenshotOptions.
await page.screenshot({
path: 'puppeteer.png',
fullPage: false,
omitBackground: false,
fromSurface: true,
});
- For viewport comparisons, use
fullPage: falseon both captures. - For full-page comparisons, use
fullPage: trueon both, and verify the page has finished loading content below the fold. - If using a clip, match its coordinates and dimensions. If transparency matters, match
omitBackground. - Compare the capture surface and any element-specific capture method, not just the output file dimensions.
Wait for the same page state
A screenshot taken before fonts, images, animations, or asynchronous content settle can differ from one captured later. Use the same navigation and readiness conditions for both runs, then verify the visual elements in question have actually appeared. networkidle2 in the example is one possible navigation condition, not a universal guarantee: the appropriate wait depends on the site and its ongoing requests. Puppeteer documents the navigation and screenshot APIs, but no single wait strategy fits every website.

Only after browser mode and version, emulation, screen geometry, capture options, and page state match should you investigate operating-system rendering, installed fonts, GPU/compositing, or color profiles. These are variables to reproduce and test—not default explanations for every mismatch. A reliable diagnosis needs the exact page, browser versions, operating system, fonts, and both images.

Use this comparison checklist
- Browser: product/build, Puppeteer version, and browser version.
- Mode: headful, current headless, or legacy headless shell.
- Page emulation: CSS viewport width and height, device scale, mobile, and touch settings.
- Screen and window: screen information and browser window dimensions where relevant.
- Capture: viewport or full page, clip, background transparency, surface, and element capture.
- Readiness and environment: page state, operating system, and relevant fonts.
Troubleshoot common mismatches
Layout breaks at different widths
Check the CSS viewport dimensions first. A matching outer window does not guarantee a matching viewport. Set it explicitly before navigation.
Text wraps differently or elements shift
Confirm browser builds and device scale, then check that web fonts have loaded and that both captures use the same operating-system and font environment. Do not assume headless mode alone explains the difference.

Mobile view differs despite matching dimensions
Compare isMobile and hasTouch as well as width, height, and device scale. Set them before navigation because changing them can reload the page.
The screenshot is cropped or has a different background
Compare fullPage, clip settings, omitBackground, and capture surface. Make the options explicit rather than relying on defaults.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteContent is missing or appears in a different state
Wait for the relevant images, fonts, animations, or asynchronous content. Match the page-ready condition between runs; network idleness alone may not establish that a particular visual element is ready.

Headless output still does not match headful Chrome
Confirm both browser versions and use current headless mode rather than headless: 'shell' for the baseline. If the reference is specifically headful, compare in headful mode too; do not expect a launch flag to guarantee pixel identity across different environments.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does setting the viewport also set the browser window size?
No. The viewport and browser screen/window geometry are separate settings; set each explicitly when the page depends on both.
Which Puppeteer headless mode should I use for a comparison with Chrome?
Use current headless mode, headless: true, for the first baseline. Legacy headless: 'shell' uses a separate browser binary and is not interchangeable for pixel comparisons.
