How to Capture a Puppeteer Screenshot After Dismissing a Modal

Wait for Puppeteer to confirm a modal is hidden or detached before capturing. Includes Locator and waitForSelector examples, navigation handling, and troubleshooting.

Click the modal’s close control, wait until the modal is hidden or detached, and only then call page.screenshot(). Use selectors that match the page you are automating: there is no universal modal or close-button selector.

Dismiss the modal, confirm it is gone, then capture

With a Puppeteer Locator, let the Locator wait for the close control, click it, and wait for the modal root to be hidden before taking the screenshot:

const closeButton = page.locator('[role="dialog"] button[aria-label="Close"]');
await closeButton.click();
await page.waitForSelector('[role="dialog"]', { hidden: true });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'after-dismiss.png' });

This assumes the page uses a dialog with a close button carrying the accessible label “Close.” Replace both selectors with ones verified against the target page. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide documents Page.screenshot() for page captures and ElementHandle.screenshot() for capturing a specific element: Screenshots | Puppeteer.

Choose a reliable way to find and close the modal

Use a Locator for the close control

Locators automatically wait for an element and its relevant state, which can reduce timing problems when the close control appears after the page loads. They do not remove the need to verify that the modal actually closed before capturing. See Puppeteer page interactions for documented Locator behavior.

  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors

  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

Use explicit selector waits when you need them

waitForSelector can wait for a selector to appear, become visible, or become hidden or detached. Its documented default timeout is 30 seconds; you can override it with the timeout option. This example waits for the close button to be visible, clicks it, then waits for the modal to disappear:

await page.waitForSelector('[role="dialog"] button[aria-label="Close"]', {
  visible: true,
});
await page.click('[role="dialog"] button[aria-label="Close"]');
await page.waitForSelector('[role="dialog"]', { hidden: true });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'after-dismiss.png' });

Consult the current Page.waitForSelector() reference for available options. Unlike a Locator, waitForSelector is a lower-level wait: it does not automatically retry a later action if that action fails.

Identify selectors from the actual page

Inspect the target page’s DOM or accessible labels to identify the modal root and its dismiss control. A site may use a dialog role, a custom class, or another structure, so a generic selector can match nothing—or the wrong element. If the modal is inside an iframe, perform the interaction and wait in the corresponding Puppeteer frame; the selector-wait API is also available on Frame.

Handle a close action that navigates

If clicking the control causes navigation rather than simply hiding the modal, start the navigation wait before clicking so the event is not missed. Puppeteer documents this Promise.all pattern:

await Promise.all([
  page.waitForNavigation(),
  page.click('[role="dialog"] button[aria-label="Continue"]'),
]);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'after-navigation.png' });

Replace the selector with the actual control. Use this pattern only when the click triggers navigation; for a modal that simply closes, wait for its hidden or detached state instead. See the Puppeteer Page class reference.

Troubleshoot a screenshot that still shows the modal

  • The close selector times out: Confirm the control exists in the page or frame you are querying, and that the selector matches its actual attributes and structure.
  • The modal wait never finishes: Check whether the modal is removed from the DOM, merely hidden, or rendered with a different root selector. The hidden wait needs to target the actual modal container.
  • The click fails or has no effect: Make sure the close control is visible and actionable, and verify that the selected element is the intended control. Explicitly waiting for visibility before clicking can make the sequence clearer.
  • The screenshot captures the next page too early: If dismissal triggers navigation, coordinate the click with waitForNavigation() rather than waiting for a modal to disappear.
  • A fixed delay works inconsistently: Prefer waiting for the relevant visible, hidden, detached, or navigation state. A fixed sleep does not confirm that the interface reached the state you need.
