Puppeteer Screenshot with a Fixed Viewport and Device Scale Factor

Set a reproducible Puppeteer viewport with explicit CSS-pixel dimensions and device scale factor, then choose the screenshot scope and output options you need.

Set the viewport before navigation with page.setViewport(), specifying its CSS-pixel width and height and a separate deviceScaleFactor. Then navigate and call page.screenshot(). The example below uses 1280 × 720 CSS pixels and a scale factor of 2 as illustrative values; choose dimensions and density that match the layout you need to reproduce.

Capture a screenshot at a fixed viewport

Install Puppeteer in your project if it is not already available, then run this ES-module example. It saves a viewport-sized PNG to screenshot.png.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.setViewport({
    width: 1280,
    height: 720,
    deviceScaleFactor: 2,
  });
  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

Set width and height in CSS pixels. deviceScaleFactor is a separate viewport metric that controls device pixel density; a value of 2 requests twice the device-pixel density in each dimension. The Puppeteer viewport reference says “page.setViewport will resize the page.” These sample numbers are not universal recommendations: select values for the layout and output density you want.

Set the viewport before page.goto() so the site lays out at the intended dimensions when it loads. Puppeteer’s current example follows that order. The docs consulted were indexed as version 25.12.0; API details can change between releases, so check the documentation for the Puppeteer version in your project.

Choose what part of the page to capture

Viewport settings define the browser’s layout dimensions; screenshot options define the captured scope. By default, page.screenshot() captures the viewport.

Viewport only

The minimal example omits fullPage, so it captures the visible viewport. Use this for repeatable above-the-fold captures or when you need a specific screen-sized frame.

Full page

Set fullPage: true to request a screenshot of the full page:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });

The documented default for fullPage is false. A full-page screenshot changes capture scope; it does not replace the viewport dimensions you set for layout.

Clipped rectangle

Use the clip screenshot option when you want a particular rectangular region rather than the viewport or full page. Define the clip rectangle in the screenshot options; consult the ScreenshotOptions reference for its fields and current requirements.

Decide between custom metrics and a device profile

For a specific layout size and pixel density, use page.setViewport() with explicit metrics. If the goal is to reproduce a named device profile, Puppeteer provides page.emulate(device), which sets user-agent and viewport metrics together. The documentation advises calling it before navigation. A device profile can be more suitable when the user agent matters as well as screen metrics; custom metrics give direct control over width, height, and scale factor.

Set output format and readiness deliberately

Image format and options

page.screenshot() can save to a path or return image bytes. Documented screenshot options include path, type, encoding, quality, and omitBackground. Quality applies to JPEG and WebP, not PNG. Check the ScreenshotOptions reference for exact accepted values and defaults in your installed version.

Wait for the page state you need

The example uses waitUntil: 'networkidle2', which is also used in the official screenshot guide. Navigation completion alone does not guarantee that dynamic content has finished changing. If the page renders important content after navigation, wait for a site-specific selector or other condition before capturing; choose a readiness condition appropriate to that site.

Troubleshoot common mismatches

  • The layout has the wrong dimensions: Confirm that setViewport() runs before navigation and that width and height are the CSS-pixel dimensions you intend to emulate.
  • The image appears at an unexpected pixel density: Check deviceScaleFactor separately from viewport width and height. It is a viewport metric, not a replacement for CSS-pixel dimensions.
  • The capture is shorter than the page: The default scope is the viewport. Set fullPage: true when the full page is required.
  • Content is missing or mid-animation: The page may still be changing after navigation. Wait for a relevant selector or site-specific readiness condition before calling screenshot().
  • A named device does not match your custom settings: Device emulation sets user-agent and viewport metrics together. Use either a device profile when matching that combined behavior, or explicit viewport metrics when you need custom dimensions and scale factor.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot through an API instead of managing Puppeteer and a browser, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one GET request and returns an image or PDF. Its screenshot API does not expose this Puppeteer setViewport() sample directly; see its API documentation for supported capture options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does deviceScaleFactor change the CSS viewport width and height?

No. Width and height are CSS-pixel dimensions; deviceScaleFactor is a separate viewport metric.

What does Puppeteer capture if I omit fullPage?

The default screenshot scope is the viewport.
