Use OBS Studio to send the church’s existing recording to YouTube Live, then set the file—or a playlist of readings—to repeat. You need a computer with OBS, the video files, a working upload connection, and a verified YouTube channel eligible to stream. You do not need a camera or hardware encoder to play a recording.
Before you set up the broadcast
Check that the channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the Advent service or event. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Confirm content rights
The church is responsible for rights to everything in the broadcast, including the reading recording, translation, music, and any other third-party material. YouTube scans live broadcasts for matches; depending on the issue, it may replace the live image with a placeholder, interrupt or terminate the stream, or apply a strike. Even when a work is licensed, the rights holder may need to add the church’s channel to its Content ID allowlist. Check the permissions for the specific materials and the church’s location before going live; the applicable license cannot be determined without those details. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and its livestream terms and conditions.

Choose how to repeat the readings
One recording: OBS Media Source
Use a Media Source when one finished video contains the readings you want to repeat. OBS supports common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. In the source’s properties, select the local video file and enable Loop; OBS will replay the file after playback completes.

Several recordings: VLC Video playlist
Use a VLC Video source when the readings are separate files and should play in a chosen sequence. Install VLC so the source is available in OBS, add the recordings to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should repeat. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default and Shuffle Playlist as off by default; check both settings so the order is intentional. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube
- Prepare the scene. In OBS, create or select the scene for the broadcast. Add a Media Source for one recording, or a VLC Video source for multiple recordings. Choose the file or playlist and set the appropriate loop option.
- Set the stream destination. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube treats the stream key like a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it if you think it has been exposed.
- Connect and inspect. Start the stream from OBS so it connects to YouTube, then check the Live Control Room preview before starting the broadcast. Make sure the picture and audio are present and that the selected recording is playing as expected. YouTube’s step-by-step instructions are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Start the event. Once the preview and stream health look right, start the live broadcast in YouTube Studio. Keep OBS running and the computer awake for as long as this DIY stream needs to stay live.
Test reliability before the Advent event
Plan a test window
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Test with representative audio and video movement—not only a still frame. Inspect the Live Control Room preview, confirm viewers can reach the channel or watch page, and check playback on mobile devices. During the event, monitor stream health and audio/video quality. The recommendations are in YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Check upload capacity, not download speed
Use the available outbound upload bandwidth as the constraint. YouTube recommends keeping around 20% of upload bandwidth free above the total stream bitrate; other devices sharing the connection can reduce what the streaming computer actually gets. YouTube also recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Review YouTube’s streaming tips and its encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for settings suited to the stream you are sending.
Consider the archive limit
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If the church intends to run a longer continuous broadcast, do not assume the same archive behavior; confirm YouTube’s current handling or plan a shorter scheduled session. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Troubleshooting common problems
- The VLC Video source is missing. Install VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS and add the source again.
- The video stops instead of repeating. Open the source properties and turn on Loop for a single Media Source, or Loop Playlist for a VLC Video playlist.
- The stream will not connect. Confirm that the channel is eligible for live streaming, that the stream URL and key are copied from the currently selected YouTube encoder stream, and that the key has not been reset. Keep the key private.
- The preview is blank or has no sound. Check that the intended file is selected, the source is visible in the scene, and the recording itself has audio. Re-test with playback moving before the event.
- The stream health is poor or viewers buffer. Check upload bandwidth rather than download speed, account for other devices on the connection, and leave the recommended upload headroom above the stream’s total bitrate.
- YouTube interrupts the broadcast or shows a placeholder. Review rights for the specific recording, translation, music, and other third-party material. A license may not prevent a Content ID interruption unless the rights holder has allowlisted the channel.
