Yes—but Google Drive stores the audio; it does not send it directly to YouTube Live. Make the file available to a computer, play it through streaming software such as OBS Studio, and send that software’s live output to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. A Drive sharing link is not established as a native YouTube Live audio input.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. Check readiness in advance. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
  • The podcast audio file accessible on the computer running OBS. OBS Media Source supports MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV files. OBS Media Sources.
  • An encoder such as OBS Studio, an internet connection able to sustain the outgoing stream, and a visual scene for the live video. The official encoder guidance describes sending a video feed; it does not define a special audio-only YouTube Live mode. YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Get the Drive audio onto the streaming computer

Google Drive for desktop can either stream files from a virtual drive or mirror them to a local folder. Streaming uses less local disk space but depends on Drive access and a reliable connection during playback. Mirroring keeps a local copy available offline, which can reduce reliance on cloud access while the episode is playing, but uses disk space. See Google Drive’s file-streaming and mirroring guidance.

Choose the option that suits your connection and storage, then confirm the audio file opens on the computer. The workflow below uses a local media file in OBS, not a pasted Drive sharing URL.

Set up the podcast stream in OBS and YouTube

  1. Prepare the YouTube live session. Open YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live, and create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room. Copy the server URL and stream key shown there. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream. YouTube explains the encoder connection in its encoder setup guide.
  2. Create a visual scene in OBS. Add the video content you want viewers to see, such as a suitable static image or other intentional scene. An audio episode still needs an outgoing video feed in this encoder workflow; do not assume a bare audio file will create a supported audio-only live broadcast.
  3. Add the episode audio. In the OBS Sources panel, select + → Media Source. Create a new source, enable Local File, and browse to the audio file accessible from the computer. Turn on Loop if you want playback to restart automatically when it reaches the end. OBS documents the supported formats and controls in its Media Sources guide.
  4. Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Use the ingest details YouTube provides for that session; keep the key private.
  5. Check audio and preview. Start streaming from OBS and check the YouTube Live Control Room preview before taking the stream public. Listen for clear, continuous sound and confirm that the intended scene appears. YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion; see its encoder settings.
  6. Go live and monitor. When the preview and stream health look right, start the broadcast in Live Control Room if required for the selected workflow. Keep an eye on the preview, stream health, and audio through the episode rather than assuming a successful start guarantees uninterrupted playback.

Choose the right playback approach

For one episode

Run OBS on the computer, play the local or mirrored episode, and monitor the broadcast. This is a practical route when you can keep the computer, OBS, and network connection available for the session.

For a continuous schedule

OBS can loop a Media Source, but looping one episode is not the same as building a varied program schedule. A playlist or repeated manual sessions may suit some setups; unattended operation also means accounting for the computer, Drive access, network, and monitoring. YouTube’s encoder help lists Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 pre-recorded video streams, but that listing does not establish support for playing audio from Google Drive. YouTube’s encoder guide.

Rights and channel rules still apply

Use podcast audio and any accompanying visuals that you own or are licensed to broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance specifically tells creators to ensure they have rights to the audio and video used in the stream. A file being stored in your Drive does not itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Review YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • OBS cannot find or play the file: Check that the file is available to the computer, that Drive for desktop is running if you rely on a streamed Drive file, and that the audio uses a format OBS Media Source supports. If cloud access is unreliable, mirror the file or use an available local copy.
  • YouTube preview has no sound: Confirm that the Media Source is active, the selected file plays in OBS, and the source is not muted. Check the OBS audio meters while the episode plays, then listen to the Live Control Room preview before going public.
  • The stream does not connect: Verify that you copied the current server URL and stream key from the intended Live Control Room session and entered them in OBS under Settings → Stream. Do not share the key.
  • The channel cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and live-streaming eligibility. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, and a restriction within the preceding 90 days affects eligibility according to YouTube’s requirements.
  • The episode stops at the end: Enable Loop in the Media Source if repeating the same file is intended. For a multi-episode program, configure and test the desired playlist behavior rather than assuming one file’s loop setting creates a schedule.
  • Playback stutters when using a streamed Drive file: Drive streaming depends on connectivity. Check the network and Drive availability, or mirror the audio locally to avoid fetching it from Drive during playback.
