What “Protocol error” means in Puppeteer
Puppeteer asks the browser to capture a screenshot through its browser-protocol connection. The generic phrase Protocol error does not identify what failed. The method, suffix, stack trace, browser output, and timing provide the useful clues.

Before changing anything, save the complete exception and record the Puppeteer, Chrome or Chromium, and Node.js versions; operating system; launch or connection settings; protocol and headless settings; screenshot options; viewport dimensions; concurrency; and whether code was closing the page or browser. This context helps distinguish a target that disappeared from a slow capture or a browser-side failure.
Use the error suffix to choose what to investigate

Reduce the failure to a minimal capture
- Keep the capture awaited. Do not close the page or browser until the screenshot promise resolves or rejects. Check that a timeout wrapper or cleanup path cannot terminate the target while capture is still running.
- Use one page and one screenshot. Temporarily remove parallel screenshot jobs and unrelated page work. If the minimal case works, reintroduce concurrency and other work one variable at a time.
- Use an ordinary viewport and small test page. If that succeeds, increase dimensions gradually. Compare ordinary viewport capture with full-page capture as separate tests.
- Change one environment condition at a time. If protocol, headless mode, launch options, or navigation conditions seem relevant, vary one and preserve the working reproduction so you can identify which change mattered.
- Check setup and environment issues. Puppeteer’s official troubleshooting guide covers browser launch and environment problems.
What reported failures can—and cannot—tell you
Issue reports are useful as examples, not universal fixes. A report of Protocol error (Page.captureScreenshot): Internal error involved Puppeteer 1.19.0, Ubuntu 18.04, and Node 10.15.2 after repeated evaluations. It shows that this failure occurred in that setup; it does not prove repeated evaluation is a general cause.

A separate report using Puppeteer 22.12.1 and Node 22.4.0 described a screenshot timeout in a particular CDP, headless, concurrent-page reproduction. The reporter said the failure disappeared in that reproduction after changing protocol or headless mode, or removing a concurrent page. Treat those as diagnostic variables for that case—not general instructions to switch protocols or headless modes.
A Puppeteer 2.0.0 issue reported “Unable to capture screenshot” with an extremely large viewport, without establishing a universal viewport limit. A 2017 issue showing Target closed during Page.captureScreenshot makes lifecycle and cleanup a sensible first check when that exact suffix appears; it does not establish a single cause.

When to change protocolTimeout
Consider a larger protocol timeout only after a minimal reproduction indicates that capture is genuinely slow and the browser remains responsive. First remove concurrency, test a small page and normal viewport, and check whether the browser is making progress. Raising the timeout can give a slow operation more time, but it cannot revive a closed target or correct a browser-side failure.
When to report a Puppeteer issue
If the reduced case still fails, provide a minimal script and the exact versions and conditions needed to reproduce it. Include the complete exception and stack, any preceding browser output, OS, launch or connection options, protocol and headless mode, viewport, screenshot options, and whether other pages were active. Keep the report limited to the configuration that actually reproduces the error.

Is there a known maximum viewport size for Puppeteer screenshots?
The reported large-viewport failure does not establish a universal limit or safe pixel threshold. Test smaller dimensions and increase them gradually.
