Monitor a redesign by tracking every old URL to its intended new destination, then checking redirect behavior, crawl and indexing signals, and real user traffic before and after launch. No single dashboard answers all of those questions: use a redirect test or crawler for URL-level faults, Google Search Console for Google’s search and indexing signals, server logs for requests, and analytics for visits.
Build a URL-by-URL migration map before launch
Start with an inventory of existing URLs and record what should happen to each one: stay at the same address, move, merge into another page, or be removed. For every moved URL, specify its true, relevant destination. This mapping becomes both the redirect plan and the checklist you monitor after deployment.

- Include important pages and other addressable resources, such as images, downloads, and documents, where their URLs matter.
- Identify pages that will be merged or removed and decide their intended outcome rather than sending every obsolete address to the homepage.
- Prepare the new pages and test their content, forms, assets, and availability before directing visitors and crawlers to them.
- Check that the new site is crawlable and that migration-only robots.txt rules or
noindexdirectives will not remain in place at launch.
For a large site, a staged move can make faults easier to observe and correct. Google contrasts that approach with simultaneous moves, which it generally recommends for small and medium-sized sites. Choose the rollout that your team can safely monitor and reverse or repair; do not stage solely for its own sake. Google’s site-move guidance explains the trade-offs.
Test redirects across the full URL inventory
Before launch, test the full old-to-new mapping, not just a handful of prominent pages. A crawler, script, or command-line tool can request each old URL and record its HTTP status, redirect destination, and any chain of intermediate redirects. Google’s migration guidance names Screaming Frog as one option for crawling redirects, while also pointing to command-line tools and scripts for large redirect sets. A paid crawler is not required if your own script can test the complete list reliably.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Request each old URL and record the response code and the final URL reached.
- Compare the result with the mapping: confirm that each moved page lands on its specific, relevant new destination.
- Flag URLs that do not redirect, lead to an unrelated page, return unexpected 404 or 5xx errors, or pass through unnecessary redirect chains.
- Request each destination directly and confirm that it loads successfully with the intended content and assets.
- Repeat tests against the deployed site at launch; pre-launch checks cannot establish that production routing is correct.
Use permanent server-side redirects when possible, point each source directly to its final destination, and retain redirects long term. Redirect verification establishes what the site returns when requested; it does not prove that Google has crawled or indexed the destination.
Check the launch itself
At deployment, verify old URLs and new destinations against production. Look for wrong redirect targets, missing redirects, redirect chains, unexpected 404 and 5xx responses, missing assets, and signs that the server is overloaded. A page can appear fine in a browser while important resources fail, so check the page and its dependent assets.

- Submit the updated sitemap containing the new URLs in Search Console.
- Update internal links to point directly to current URLs rather than relying on redirects.
- Keep access to old and new server logs so requests to both URL sets can be compared.
- Check that robots.txt and page-level indexing directives allow the intended new pages to be crawled and indexed.
A sitemap helps Google discover URLs, but it is not proof that every URL was crawled or indexed. For crawl-discovery and capacity issues, see Google’s troubleshooting guidance for crawling errors.

Monitor indexing, crawling, and visits after launch
Keep the old and new URL sets distinct in your monitoring. In Search Console, compare their sitemap and indexing counts over time: the expected direction is old URLs declining as new URLs are discovered and indexed. Review search queries, impressions, and clicks for the new URLs as they appear. Those reports describe Google Search activity, not all visits to the site.

Use the other evidence sources for the questions they can answer:
- Server logs: show requests reaching your servers, including Googlebot activity and responses for particular URLs. Use them to find unexpected status codes and determine whether important old and new URLs are being requested.
- Analytics: shows measured user activity, subject to the analytics implementation. It can reveal visits or conversions changing after launch, but it does not establish crawl or index status.
- A crawler or script: can repeatedly test the mapped URLs and report technical behavior such as redirect destinations, chains, and page-level errors. It cannot establish that Google indexed a page or explain a change in search demand.
- Search Console: reports Google indexing and search signals. It does not replace redirect testing or server-log analysis.
Use Search Console reports to spot crawl or indexing error spikes, then investigate individual examples with URL Inspection and check the full inventory with a crawler or script. Google says there are no fixed crawl frequencies: timing depends on site size and the crawling speed available. It also says Googlebot must visit every URL on both the old and new sites at least once for Google to consider a move complete. Its guidance describes a few weeks for most small to medium sites, with larger sites taking longer; this is qualitative guidance, not a recovery deadline or guarantee. Read Google’s site-move timing guidance.

Why did organic traffic drop after a redesign?
A short-term search fluctuation can happen while Google recrawls and reindexes URLs. An early decline by itself does not show that the migration caused permanent damage. Check technical explanations first, using affected URLs and queries to narrow the investigation.
- Validate the destination: check for missing redirects, incorrect targets, chains, or pages redirected to content that does not match the old page.
- Check availability and status: look for new 404s, other unexpected HTTP errors, failed resources, rendering problems, or server-capacity limits.
- Check crawl and index controls: confirm the new pages are not blocked by robots.txt or marked
noindexunintentionally. - Check discovery signals: verify the new sitemap is current and internal links lead to the new URLs.
- Compare affected pages and queries: use Search Console to see where impressions or clicks changed, then distinguish page-specific losses from broader query changes.
- Consider non-migration causes: seasonality and changing user interest can alter search traffic even when the technical move is sound.

Capture visual evidence of redesigned pages
Redirect, indexing, and traffic checks do not tell you whether the new page looks right. For visual QA, capture representative pages before and after the redesign, including key templates and pages with important forms or interactive elements. A screenshot can help identify layout or rendering differences, but it is not a substitute for checking HTTP status, crawlability, or indexation.
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; its clean shots remove known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed.
Or skip the browser setup
For a one-off visual capture, make a GET request with the target URL and your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details.
Quick Recap
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace https://stripe.com with the page you want to capture. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools, including through Claude, Cursor, or any MCP client.
