Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If Puppeteer fails before it can capture a screenshot on Windows, first identify whether Chrome is missing, blocked by an extension policy, or denied access by the Windows sandbox. Those errors need different fixes; adding --no-sandbox by default can hide the diagnosis rather than solve it. This guide follows the error from installation through launch to a working screenshot.
1. Check that Puppeteer’s browser actually installed
The puppeteer package normally downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing build and, since Puppeteer v21.6.0, a separate chrome-headless-shell binary. If your package manager blocks dependency install scripts, the browser download may have been skipped. One common symptom is Could not find Chrome (ver. ...).
- From your project directory, run
npx puppeteer browsers installto install the browser manually. - If your package manager requires explicit permission for dependency scripts, allow Puppeteer’s install script according to that package manager’s policy.
- Check that the browser cache is available to the same Windows user account that runs Node.js. Puppeteer’s documented default cache moved to
~/.cache/puppeteerin v19.0.0.
Puppeteer documentation version 25.12.0 gives an approximate Windows Chrome for Testing download size of 280 MB; the actual download or installed size can vary. See the Puppeteer installation guide.
2. Match the launch error to its Windows fix
Chrome policy requires extensions
Puppeteer passes --disable-extensions by default. On some managed Windows systems, Chrome policy enforces extensions, and that conflict can prevent Chrome from launching. If the error coincides with an extension policy, try Puppeteer’s documented enableExtensions launch option:
#1 Best Overall
- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
enableExtensions: true,
});
This is a targeted policy workaround, not a general launch flag to add to every project. See Puppeteer’s Windows troubleshooting guide.
Sandbox reports “Access is denied”
A Windows sandbox permissions failure can look like this: Sandbox cannot access executable. Check filesystem permissions are valid ... Access is denied. (0x5). Puppeteer v22.14.0 and later attempts to configure permissions for its downloaded Chrome by running Chrome’s setup.exe during browser installation. If you use an older Puppeteer version, or the error persists after installation, the troubleshooting guide documents this manual permission grant:
icacls "%USERPROFILE%/.cache/puppeteer/chrome" /grant *S-1-15-2-1:(OI)(CI)(RX)
Run it in Command Prompt or PowerShell. The documented path assumes Puppeteer’s default cache location; if your browser cache is configured elsewhere, adjust the target to the actual downloaded Chrome directory. The guide notes that a more restrictive SID may be preferable in high-security environments. Do not treat disabling Chrome’s sandbox as the standard Windows permission fix.

3. Verify Node, Windows, and browser selection
Puppeteer documentation version 25.12.0 lists Node 22.12 or newer and Chrome for Testing on Windows x64 as system requirements. It also lists tar.exe or PowerShell as the Windows unpacking utility, unless the optional yauzl dependency is installed. These requirements are specific to that documentation version and may change; check the current system requirements before upgrading or diagnosing an installation issue.

Downloads and manages a compatible browser. | Confirm install scripts ran and the downloaded browser is present. |

When you manage Chrome yourself, for example, select a regular Chrome installation by channel or point directly to the executable:

const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
channel: 'chrome',
// Or use executablePath: 'C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe'
});
Use either channel or executablePath according to how Chrome is installed; the example path is a common location, not guaranteed for every Windows installation. Puppeteer guarantees operation only with its bundled browser, so a separately managed Chrome version introduces compatibility risk. See the installation guide and LaunchOptions reference.
4. Turn on browser output and test visible Chrome
When the error is unclear, capture Chrome’s own output before trying extra flags. dumpio: true pipes browser stdout and stderr to Node’s output. The documented default startup timeout is 30 seconds, so startup output can also distinguish a slow launch from a missing executable or permissions problem.

const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
dumpio: true,
headless: false, // temporary diagnosis; remove if not needed
});
Current Puppeteer defaults to regular headless Chrome. The separate headless: 'shell' mode runs chrome-headless-shell, which does not completely match regular Chrome behavior. If a page or screenshot relies on a feature that behaves differently in the shell, compare regular headless Chrome with visible Chrome using headless: false. See the headless modes guide and LaunchOptions reference.

5. Capture the screenshot once launch succeeds
This complete CommonJS example launches the bundled browser, navigates to a page, saves a screenshot, and closes Chrome even if navigation or capture throws an error:
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
page.screenshot() captures a page; for a specific element, use ElementHandle.screenshot(). The Puppeteer screenshots guide documents both approaches.
Or skip the browser setup
If your task is simply to retrieve a website screenshot and you do not need to run Chrome locally, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request takes a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its browser setup is handled for you; cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture, and bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshooting checklist
Could not find Chrome: Runnpx puppeteer browsers install; check whether the package manager skipped Puppeteer’s install script and whether Node is using the expected cache.- Chrome exits immediately on a managed machine: If the environment enforces extensions, try
enableExtensions: truerather than adding unrelated flags. Sandbox cannot access executableor access denied: Check Puppeteer’s version and downloaded Chrome permissions; for older versions or a persistent failure, use the documentedicaclscommand after verifying the cache path.- Using
puppeteer-core: It does not install a browser. Confirm theexecutablePathexists or that the selectedchannelis installed. - Launch waits and times out: Set
dumpio: trueand inspect Chrome output before changing timeout or launch flags. - Screenshot differs in shell mode: Compare with regular headless Chrome or visible mode; the shell does not fully match regular Chrome.
