A Urlbox request can succeed while capturing the wrong page: a Cloudflare challenge may arrive with HTTP 200, while harder blocks may return 403 or 429. Check both the final status and captured content. For hard blocks, configure failures and retries; for challenge pages that return 200, check for small output or a known challenge element. Escalate to stealth rendering and, only when relevant, a proxy you provide. None of these settings guarantees access.
First, identify what Urlbox captured
Inspect the final response status and the image or PDF itself. A 403 or 429 can signal a hard block, but a challenge page can return 200, so an HTTP-success check alone is not enough. A nearly blank or unusually small capture can be a soft-block clue, but size is only a heuristic: set a threshold against that page’s normal output.

- 403 or 429: treat the status as a failure if it is not an expected result for that target.
- HTTP 200 with a verification page: status-based checks will not catch it; inspect the content or test for a stable challenge selector.
- Tiny or blank output: check whether the page is still loading or a challenge is being shown before deciding that size alone proves a block.
Urlbox describes these patterns and the relevant retry controls in its Avoiding Being Blocked guide.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMake hard blocks fail visibly
Configure Urlbox’s fail_on for specific statuses, or fail_on_4xx if all client-error responses should fail. This helps prevent an error page from being accepted as the requested screenshot. Choose the policy for the target: not every 4xx response necessarily means a bot block.

Detect challenge pages that return 200
When a challenge page is consistently smaller than the intended page, use min_size_bytes and include small_size in retry_on. If the challenge has a stable element, use wait_to_leave with fail_if_selector_present to fail while that element remains visible. Validate the selector and size threshold against the particular site; Urlbox’s documentation does not specify universal values.
Retry with targeted escalation
Use retry_on to specify which outcomes warrant another attempt and retry_with to add or change options on later attempts. Urlbox’s guide illustrates a sequence that starts with a normal render, enables stealth on a retry, and adds a proxy on a later attempt, with up to three retries. That is an example configuration, not a recommended universal count or a promise of success. The guide says retry options, min_size_bytes, and proxy are available on Ultra and above; verify current plan terms before relying on them.
Choose the remedy that matches the signal
| Remedy | What it addresses | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|
fail_on or fail_on_4xx |
Hard blocks expressed as HTTP error statuses such as 403 or 429 | Detects failure rather than changing the result; choose statuses appropriate to the target. |
min_size_bytes or a challenge selector |
Soft blocks that return a normal status but show challenge content | Thresholds and selectors need validation for the specific page. |
hide_headless |
Basic browser-automation detection, according to Urlbox | Urlbox describes it as the lighter option. |
use_stealth |
More strongly reduces browser automation fingerprints, according to Urlbox | Urlbox says stealth renders are noticeably slower and recommends using it on retries rather than as a default. If both stealth settings are set, the options reference says use_stealth takes precedence. |
| User-supplied proxy | Potential IP-reputation or geographic-origin blocks | Changes the outgoing IP; requires your own provider and may still be blocked or restricted by the site or provider. |
Urlbox’s options reference documents proxy and stored use_proxy as requiring Ultra or above, and request header as requiring HiFi or above. It also supports cookies and different page-wait conditions. Check the current Urlbox Render Options reference for plan eligibility. A header, cookie, or longer wait may address an ordinary access or timing requirement, but is not evidence that a Cloudflare challenge will be solved by changing that setting.
When a proxy is relevant
A proxy may help when the block is related to the render service’s IP reputation or geographic origin. Urlbox routes the target request through a proxy that you supply; it does not provide proxies. A site may block proxy traffic, and a proxy provider may restrict access to high-value domains or require verification or an appropriate web-unlocker product. Check both Urlbox plan eligibility and the provider’s rules in the Urlbox proxy guide. A proxy is an escalation to test, not a guaranteed bypass.

Why Cloudflare may keep showing a challenge
Cloudflare lists several possible challenge factors, including IP reputation, bot detection, custom WAF rules, and Browser Integrity Check. For challenge loops, its troubleshooting guidance also points to network instability, unsupported browsers, disabled JavaScript, missing cookies or DOM storage, blocked access to challenges.cloudflare.com, and changing user agents. These are possible causes, not a diagnosis of a particular Urlbox capture. See Cloudflare’s challenge troubleshooting and challenge solve issues pages.
Common troubleshooting cases
The request is marked successful, but the image is a challenge
Do not rely on status alone. Check the image, then add a validated size threshold or challenge selector so a soft block is detected and can trigger a retry.
The render returns 403 or 429
Set fail_on for the relevant statuses, or use fail_on_4xx if every 4xx should fail for this target. Configure retries for the statuses that warrant another attempt.

Retries repeat the same blocked result
Use progressive escalation rather than repeating an identical request: try stealth on a later attempt, then consider a user-supplied proxy only if IP reputation or geography is a plausible factor. Retries add render latency, and a proxy can also be denied.

The challenge loops despite stealth or a proxy
Check whether JavaScript, cookies and DOM storage are available, whether challenge scripts can load, and whether network stability or user-agent changes are interfering. If access remains denied, use an authorized access path or ask the site owner; repeated attempts do not establish permission.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 200 response mean Cloudflare allowed the screenshot?
No. A challenge page can be served with HTTP 200, so inspect the captured content or use a validated size or selector check.
Will stealth or a proxy guarantee a successful Urlbox screenshot?
No. They may address browser-fingerprint or IP-related signals, but the site or proxy provider can still block the request.
