What Puppeteer device emulation does—and does not do
Puppeteer’s page.emulate(device) applies a device descriptor’s viewport metrics and user agent. The API describes it as a shortcut for setting those values with Page.setUserAgent() and Page.setViewport(). Because a site may respond to a viewport resize, Puppeteer advises applying emulation before navigating to the page. See the Puppeteer Page.emulate() API.

This is useful for automating screenshots at chosen viewport and device profiles. It makes the browser session repeatable; it does not establish that the site ran on the named physical phone, with that phone’s hardware or complete browser environment.

What Chrome DevTools can simulate
Chrome DevTools Device Mode can simulate mobile viewports, orientation, selected sensor conditions such as geolocation, and CPU and network throttling. It can capture the current viewport or a full-page screenshot. These controls help inspect breakpoints and create repeatable visual artifacts without handling a phone for every change. Chrome calls Device Mode a “first-order approximation” and advises running the page on a mobile device when in doubt. See Chrome DevTools Device Mode.

Throttling is not a measurement of a particular phone. In Chrome’s documentation, the “Mid-tier mobile” and “Low-end mobile” presets describe simulated network and CPU conditions; the CPU slowdown is relative to the developer’s computer. A throttled desktop therefore cannot establish how a specific handset performs.
What headless screen settings mean
Puppeteer documents an 800×600 headless screen default for the configuration it describes when --screen-info is not supplied, unless --window-size is used. This is a browser screen-configuration default, not a mobile-device size or evidence of phone rendering. See Puppeteer screen configuration.

Automate a responsive screenshot with Puppeteer

})();Choose the capture type for the question you are asking: a viewport screenshot shows what is visible in the current window, while a full-page screenshot shows the page’s length and below-the-fold content. A full-page image alone does not tell you how a user experiences scrolling or interaction.
Use a real phone to resolve uncertainty
Test on an actual phone when a high-impact path depends on real touch input, mobile-browser behavior, or hardware-specific rendering—or when an emulated capture leaves a material question unanswered. Chrome’s guidance is to run the page on a mobile device when in doubt. A physical-device screenshot covers only the device, browser, orientation, page state, and conditions used for that capture; one phone cannot establish compatibility across all Android, iOS, browser, and hardware combinations.

- Start with automated captures at the responsive widths and device profiles important to your site.
- Review viewport captures for visible layout and full-page captures for page length and content below the fold.
- Choose a real phone for critical user journeys or unresolved rendering and interaction questions.
- Record the phone, browser, orientation, and page state with the capture so another person can interpret and reproduce it. This is practical documentation advice, not a published device-testing standard.
Troubleshooting common capture problems
The screenshot has the wrong layout
- Cause: Emulation was applied after navigation, or the script used an unexpected device descriptor or viewport.
- Fix: Apply
page.emulate(device)orpage.setViewport()beforepage.goto(). Confirm the intended descriptor exists in your installed Puppeteer version.
The screenshot is blank or the page is incomplete
- Cause: Navigation or page rendering did not finish before capture, or the page failed to load.
- Fix: Inspect navigation errors and the page state, and adjust the wait condition to fit the site. A network-idle condition can be unsuitable for pages that maintain ongoing network activity; use a deliberate wait for the content you need rather than assuming one timing rule fits every site.
A device frame makes the capture look authentic
- Cause: A visual phone frame has been mistaken for a physical-device test.
- Fix: Treat the frame as decoration. Device Mode documentation makes clear that emulation is an approximation, not proof the screenshot came from that phone.
Throttled results do not match a phone
- Cause: DevTools CPU throttling is relative to the host computer, and network and CPU presets are simulated conditions.
- Fix: Use throttling for controlled comparisons, not as a measurement of a particular handset. Test on the target hardware when the actual experience matters.
