Set a deliberate mobile CSS viewport in Chrome DevTools, capture the page, and inspect the shopping journey at that size. A phone’s “6.5-inch” screen measurement is its diagonal—not a universal browser width or height—so use the target phone’s reported CSS dimensions when testing a particular model. Set device pixel ratio (DPR) separately.
Why 6.5 inches does not define the viewport
Screen diagonal alone cannot tell you the browser’s CSS viewport dimensions. Aspect ratio, browser controls, display scaling, and the device’s mapping between physical pixels and CSS pixels all affect what the page receives. Chrome’s documentation lets you enter custom width and height and choose a DPR; it does not prescribe a single resolution for every 6.5-inch phone. Chrome’s Device Mode guide

If you are testing a named phone, use its reported CSS dimensions. If you do not have those dimensions, choose a width and height as a clearly labeled test scenario—not as the definition of a 6.5-inch phone. Keep DPR as a separate setting: it is the ratio of physical screen pixels to logical CSS pixels and affects drawing on high-density displays.
Set up the phone-sized viewport in Chrome
- Open the shopping page and DevTools. In Chrome, open the page, then open DevTools and toggle the device toolbar.
- Choose Responsive mode. Enter the intended viewport width and height in the dimension fields. For a named target device, use its reported CSS dimensions; otherwise record your chosen dimensions as a test scenario.
- Set device type and DPR for the question you are testing. Use a mobile device type when you need mobile rendering and touch-event emulation. Set DPR separately when checking high-density rendering. These settings are not substitutes for viewport dimensions.
- Capture the screenshot. Take a viewport screenshot to review the initial visible screen. If you need to inspect content below the fold, choose Chrome’s full-size screenshot option instead.
- Inspect nearby sizes and orientation. Repeat at a narrower and a wider viewport to reveal breakpoint transitions. Rotate the emulated viewport to check landscape where it matters. Chrome can display media-query breakpoints for examining responsive changes.
Inspect the shopping experience, not just the screenshot
Check the first screen
- Can a shopper see and understand the product image, title, price, selected variant, and availability or delivery information?
- Is the main purchase control visible and understandable?
- Are the search, menu, and cart controls visible and reachable?
- Do dialogs, cookie notices, or sticky bars cover essential product information or actions?
Check layout and readability
- Look for clipped or overlapping product cards, cut-off prices or delivery details, and text that is difficult to read.
- Check whether content causes unexpected horizontal scrolling.
- Compare wrapping, visibility, overflow, and layout changes at the narrower and wider widths. A single screenshot cannot show whether the layout fails near a breakpoint.
Exercise the key interactions
Use the emulated mobile controls to open navigation, choose a product option, add the item to the cart, and proceed through the checkout steps the site supports. For an Indian store, use valid test data and the site’s actual delivery and payment options; there is no single checkout rule to assume for every Indian retailer.

Review density, orientation, and constrained performance
Check whether text and product images render sharply at the selected DPR, and whether portrait and landscape remain usable. If loading or interaction speed is part of the review, use DevTools network and CPU throttling to expose problems under constrained conditions. Record the settings used so another tester can reproduce the screenshot and comparison.
Know when to verify on a real phone
Chrome describes Device Mode as “a first-order approximation of how your page looks and performs on a mobile device.” It can emulate a viewport, mobile touch events, and other conditions, but it is not proof that a page behaves the same on every handset. Chrome for Developers

Use a physical phone for important behavior when hardware or browser differences could matter, or when the emulated result leaves doubt. India’s Guidelines for Indian Government Websites and apps (GIGW) also recommends testing with physical devices, emulators, or browser-based tools. Emulation is an efficient first pass; real-device checks complement it.
