Use Puppeteer’s userDataDir launch option to choose a browser user-data directory. Use a BrowserContext to isolate cookies and local storage between tasks inside one browser. They solve different problems: a directory belongs to the launched browser, while a context is a separate storage scope within it.
What Puppeteer’s profile options do
Puppeteer’s launch API identifies userDataDir as the option for setting a user data directory. This is where browser data for that launched browser is stored. The LaunchOptions API reference describes the option and its type.
A BrowserContext, by contrast, is created within a running browser. Contexts isolate storage such as cookies and localStorage from other contexts. Chrome’s non-default contexts are incognito contexts, according to the BrowserContext API reference.
| Option | Scope | What it separates | How it ends |
|---|---|---|---|
userDataDir |
Browser launch | The user-data directory selected for that browser process | When the browser process closes |
BrowserContext |
Within a running browser | Context storage, including cookies and local storage | Call context.close(); its pages close with it |
Choose the right option for the job
Use userDataDir for a chosen directory
Set userDataDir in puppeteer.launch() when a run should use a particular browser data directory. The directory must be writable by the process running Chrome. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide shows /tmp/.puppeteer-profile as an example for environments that need a writable temporary location; it is not a universal path recommendation. See Puppeteer troubleshooting.

The reviewed API reference does not give platform-specific default profile paths or a general procedure for reusing a person’s everyday Chrome profile. Do not assume a guessed path will work or that a regular profile is safe to reuse. If concurrent processes need separate browser state, use distinct directories unless your deployment has been verified with shared-directory access.
Use a context for isolated tasks in one browser
Create a context when automation tasks within a browser should not share cookies or local storage. Open pages from that context, then close it when the task finishes. The browser management guide demonstrates this lifecycle.

Launch with a user data directory
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
userDataDir: './puppeteer-data'
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
console.log(await page.title());
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Choose a directory that the browser process can write to. Use a distinct directory for each concurrently running browser unless shared access has been tested in your environment.
Create and close an isolated browser context
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const context = await browser.createBrowserContext();
try {
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
console.log(await page.title());
} finally {
await context.close();
}
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Closing the context closes its pages. Keep the browser open if you need to create more contexts; close the browser when the overall automation run is done.
How args, headless mode, and executablePath relate
args passes browser command-line options
The args launch option supplies additional command-line arguments to the browser process. Puppeteer also supports ignoring or filtering its default arguments, but the launch API cautions that users probably want those defaults. Change them only when you have a demonstrated need; they are not profile settings.

Headless mode changes launch behavior, not storage scope
The launch API currently lists headless as defaulting to true, which uses new headless mode. Setting headless: 'shell' selects the old headless shell. Neither setting changes the distinction between a user-data directory and a context.
A custom executable is not covered by the bundled-browser guarantee
You can set executablePath to select a browser executable, but Puppeteer says this is at your own risk: it is only guaranteed to work with its bundled browser. A custom executable does not change how userDataDir or contexts work; it does introduce a browser-compatibility variable.
Troubleshooting profile and context problems
- Chrome cannot write to the profile directory: Check the directory’s existence and permissions for the user running the browser. In restricted environments, choose a writable location; Puppeteer’s troubleshooting page includes
/tmp/.puppeteer-profileas an example. - Two tasks appear to share cookies: If they use the same context, they share that context’s storage. Create separate contexts and open each task’s pages from its own context.
- State does not persist as expected between runs: Confirm the runs launch with the same intended
userDataDirand that the process can write to it. A context is an isolation boundary within a browser, not a substitute for selecting a directory at launch. - A custom Chrome build fails or behaves differently: Puppeteer only guarantees compatibility with its bundled browser. Verify the executable and installed Puppeteer version together.
- A launch option seems to have no effect: Check the installed version’s API and ensure the setting is supplied to
puppeteer.launch();userDataDiris a launch option, while context creation happens after launch.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is simply to capture a webpage rather than manage browser storage, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF; its options are separate from Puppeteer’s profile and context controls.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are userDataDir and BrowserContext interchangeable?
No. userDataDir selects a directory at browser launch; a context separates storage within a running browser.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan I safely use my normal Chrome profile with Puppeteer?
The reviewed Puppeteer API reference does not establish a general procedure or compatibility guarantee for reusing an everyday Chrome profile. Avoid assuming a guessed path or setup is safe.
Do Puppeteer’s headless options determine whether contexts are isolated?
No. Headless mode changes browser launch behavior; contexts provide storage isolation.
