To benchmark Puppeteer well, measure a repeatable automation task under pinned conditions, report the distribution of run times and failures, and keep task latency separate from browser runtime metrics and page-performance audits. There is no universal “Puppeteer speed” number: the useful result depends on what your workflow does and which layer you are measuring.
Decide what performance question you are answering
Puppeteer is a JavaScript library for controlling Chrome or Firefox through the DevTools Protocol (CDP) or WebDriver BiDi, as its official guide explains. “Performance” can describe several different things; choose the measurement that matches the question before writing a benchmark.

- Automation-task latency: how long a workflow takes from a defined start to a defined finish. Depending on your boundaries, this may include browser launch, navigation, waits, selectors, interactions, result extraction, and teardown.
- Browser runtime activity: metrics and trace events that help diagnose what the browser was doing during a run.
- Page performance: audit results about the page itself, such as those produced by Lighthouse. These are not measurements of Puppeteer execution speed.
Report these as separate results. A trace or page score may help explain a slow automation run, but it does not replace the end-to-end time for the task.

1. Choose a representative workload
Use a stable scenario that resembles the work you want to understand: for example, a navigation-and-interaction flow, a crawl over a defined set of pages, or a repeated UI operation. Specify the target page or fixture, test data, actions, waits, and success condition. If network or page conditions vary, control them where possible or record the variation.

2. Fix the timing boundaries
State exactly when the clock starts and stops. Decide whether browser launch and teardown belong in the headline result. If both startup and already-running behavior matter, measure them separately rather than silently mixing them. Keep the same boundaries for every compared configuration.
3. Record and hold the environment steady
Pin or record the Node.js version, Puppeteer version, browser build, operating system, CPU and memory environment, browser mode, and protocol. Run comparisons under equivalent machine and workload conditions. When a condition cannot be held steady, disclose it and avoid presenting the result as a clean apples-to-apples comparison.
4. Warm up, then repeat
Declare a warm-up policy and perform repeated measured runs. Save each run’s duration and outcome, including errors and timeouts. Summarize a distribution—such as the median plus percentiles or interquartile range—instead of selecting the fastest run. There is no sample count or pass/fail threshold established by the cited Puppeteer documentation; choose a repeat count appropriate to the variability and disclose it.
5. Keep instrumentation overhead visible
Use uninstrumented runs for the primary latency result if tracing or extra metric collection changes the workload. Capture traces for representative typical or slow runs to investigate browser activity, but state whether instrumentation was enabled. Do not quietly include trace-collection overhead in one configuration and exclude it from another.
Measure the browser and diagnose slow runs
Page metrics and tracing
Puppeteer’s Page API exposes metrics and tracing. A trace can be opened in Chrome DevTools or another timeline viewer to inspect work during a run. Metrics and traces are diagnostic evidence: they can help locate browser-side bottlenecks, but should be reported separately from task latency.

Chrome DevTools Protocol runtime metrics
The Chrome DevTools Protocol Performance domain supports enabling collection and retrieving current runtime metrics. Use this when the question concerns runtime activity, and document the collection method and timing. CDP-specific instrumentation is not automatically equivalent to a BiDi run, so avoid treating results as directly comparable unless the setup is equivalent.
Page audits with Lighthouse
If the question is how a page loads or performs, use Lighthouse and report its audit results apart from Puppeteer task timing. Lighthouse can be used programmatically as a Node module and can audit public or authenticated pages; see Chrome for Developers’ Lighthouse documentation. Do not label a Lighthouse score as Puppeteer speed.

Compare protocols, platforms, and browser modes carefully
When comparing configurations, change one axis at a time where practical and show the conditions alongside the results.
- Protocol: compare CDP and WebDriver BiDi only when both are supported and the workload and environment are equivalent.
- Operating system: stratify results by platform rather than pooling unlike environments without showing the split.
- Browser mode: keep headless shell, new headless, and headful results distinct when those are the modes under test.
- Reliability: include failures, timeouts, and known flakiness with latency rather than reporting successful runs alone.
The Chromium BiDi benchmarks separate protocol, platform, and browser-mode categories and report known flakiness for some Mac comparisons. The page reported its last update as 2026-09-17. It does not establish one speed result that applies to every Puppeteer workload; use it as an example of why conditions and reliability matter, not as a universal target.
What to publish with your results
A benchmark is useful only if another developer can understand what was run and how to interpret the numbers. Include:

If your actual task is obtaining a website screenshot rather than benchmarking a browser-automation workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request API. This does not replace a Puppeteer benchmark; it is an alternative for screenshot capture.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Example cURL request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a trace tell me how fast Puppeteer is?
No. A trace helps diagnose browser activity during a run; measure the automation task’s end-to-end latency separately.
Is there a standard number of Puppeteer runs I must report?
The cited Puppeteer documentation does not prescribe a sample count. Choose a repeat count suited to workload variability and disclose it.
