Psychological Horror vs. Survival Horror: What’s the Difference?

Psychological horror focuses on uncertainty and emotional disturbance; survival horror makes staying alive the central challenge. Many games combine both.

Psychological horror is defined by the kind of fear it emphasizes: uncertainty, emotional disturbance and unsettling story implications. Survival horror is defined more by what the player must do: explore, solve problems and stay alive while facing dangerous threats, often with limited resources. The labels overlap—a game can use both approaches at once.

How the two horror styles differ

Aspect Psychological horror Survival horror
Main emphasis Unease, uncertainty, emotional pressure and troubling interpretations. Vulnerability and consequential decisions about surviving threats.
What the player does Interpret events and endure psychological or narrative pressure. Explore, solve puzzles, manage resources, and decide whether to confront or evade danger.
Typical tension tools Atmosphere, mystery, unsettling situations and uncertain meaning. Limited resources, exploration, puzzles, and risky combat or flight decisions.
Can it include the other style? Yes. Psychological storytelling does not rule out physical threats or survival systems. Yes. Survival mechanics can support an unsettling atmosphere and psychological story.

This is a comparison of design emphases, not a strict genre test. A game need not lack monsters or combat to count as psychological horror, and survival horror is not simply a matter of having scarce ammunition.

What makes a game psychological horror?

Psychological horror puts the player’s uncertainty and interpretation near the center of the experience. The fear may come from what events seem to mean, what a character is experiencing, or the unsettling implications of a situation—not only from an enemy attacking.

Konami calls SILENT HILL 2 a psychological horror game in its October 19, 2022 announcement. It describes James Sunderland searching for clues in the town after receiving a letter from his long-dead wife, and says the game’s monsters and other manifestations are tied to James’s consciousness. That makes it a clear example of psychological horror’s emphasis on disturbing narrative and inner experience, without implying that the game has no physical danger. Konami’s announcement identified PlayStation 5 and PC as platforms at that time.

What makes a game survival horror?

Survival horror makes staying alive a practical, ongoing problem. The player is exposed to threats and must make choices about where to go, what to investigate, how to handle resources, and whether to fight or avoid danger. Limited resources are common, but they are only one part of a broader loop involving exploration, puzzles and vulnerable encounters.

Capcom’s developers describe fear, environmental exploration, puzzle-solving, resource management and combat as pillars of Resident Evil. Their discussion of Resident Evil 7 biohazard also notes that its demo foregrounded horror and exploration, showing how atmosphere and survival-oriented play can work together. Capcom’s developer interview is a useful account of that design approach.

Survival does not mean being completely helpless

Survival horror often makes the player feel vulnerable, but vulnerability is not the same as having no way to respond. In a 2011 report, Silent Hill: Downpour design director Brian Gomez described the genre as deliberately disempowering the player, alongside slower pacing, puzzles, exploration and a survivor protagonist. That is one designer’s perspective, not a universal rulebook. Game Developer’s report quotes Gomez: “In survival horror games, this means dis-empowering the player, something that as game designers we are often taught not to do.”

Shinji Mikami’s perspective, as reported in a 2014 interview, also allows players to fight back: survival horror can let players defeat monsters, even if doing so is difficult. The report quotes Mikami saying, “The horror aspect of the game and the entertainment aspect of the game have to mix together.” PlayStation Universe’s report attributes those comments to Mikami.

Can a game be both?

Yes. Psychological horror describes an emphasis on mental and emotional unease; survival horror describes an emphasis on threatened, resource-conscious play. A game can make its story and atmosphere unsettling while also asking the player to explore, solve puzzles, manage supplies and face dangerous encounters. The labels are most useful as a way to explain which kind of tension is more prominent—not as mutually exclusive categories.

For example, SILENT HILL 2 is explicitly described by Konami as psychological horror, while its threats and exploration can also create survival-oriented tension. Resident Evil 7 biohazard foregrounds fear and exploration while incorporating the broader survival pillars Capcom identifies. Neither example needs to be treated as a “pure” specimen of one category.

Project Songbird - PlayStation 5
  • A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
  • A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
  • A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
  • The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
  • The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.

Which style should you choose?

Think about what you want the tension to ask of you. A psychological-horror emphasis may suit you if you enjoy uncertainty, unsettling implications and interpreting a story. A survival-horror emphasis may suit you if you want exploration, puzzles, resource decisions and risky choices around threats. If both appeal, look for games that combine narrative unease with hands-on survival demands.

Publishers use genre labels differently, so treat them as guidance rather than guarantees. Bandai Namco’s horror-games category is one publisher’s taxonomy, not a neutral standard that every game must follow: Bandai Namco Europe’s horror-games overview.
