Beetle-bait traps catch the species that are present, active and attracted to the particular bait—not every beetle living in a habitat. What lands in a trap reflects the interaction of bait, local species, habitat, season, weather, trap design and sampling effort. That is why a dung-bait trap in a pasture can produce a different catch from one in a forest, and why neither catch is a complete census.
Why do different beetles go to different bait?
Many dung beetles and carrion-associated beetles use those materials as food or breeding resources. Bait releases chemical cues linked to a resource, and species differ in their sensory responses, diets and life histories. A dung bait can therefore attract some species strongly while drawing few others; carrion can attract a different set.

That pattern appears across studies, but it does not establish one universal mechanism or bait preference for every beetle family. The best evidence here concerns dung beetles and carrion-associated assemblages, so it should not be generalized to all insects called beetles.
How can habitat change which species a trap catches?
Different habitats have different beetle communities
A bait can only catch beetles that occur nearby and are active during the sampling period. Forest, pasture, grassland and woodland sites can differ in which species are present, as well as in vegetation, soil and the dung resources available. In a 2025 study in Tanzania’s Serengeti, beetle abundance, diversity, richness or community composition varied with habitat, vegetation, herbivore dung and soil characteristics. Those associations describe that landscape, not universal effect sizes or a single cause of habitat differences. Serengeti study

Generalists may switch; specialists may not
In Los Tuxtlas, Mexico, researchers sampled 80 tropical forest fragments and adjacent cattle pastures using human-dung and fish-carrion traps. Across the 15,445 beetles and 42 species collected, they classified 21 species as dung specialists, seven as carrion specialists, eight as generalists and six as too rare to classify. Generalists tended to change bait selection between habitats, while specialists tended to retain their resource category. Dung was selected most often overall, but the pattern varied by species and habitat. Los Tuxtlas study
Habitat may also affect the setting in which beetles move and odors disperse. The studies document differences in communities and bait associations; they do not show that vegetation alone, or any other single factor, explains every change in catch.

What have bait-trap studies found?
| Study location and scope | What the study found |
|---|---|
| Great Plains, North America; two years | Researchers caught 9,089 dung beetles representing 15 species. Average capture varied across omnivore, herbivore and carnivore dung, and species showed distinct preferences. Omnivore dung was most attractive overall in this study; human and chimpanzee dung had the highest reported means. Carrion also attracted substantial captures. These are local study results, not a general bait recommendation. Great Plains study |
| Los Tuxtlas, Mexico; 80 forest fragments and adjacent pastures | Researchers collected 15,445 beetles from 42 species with human-dung and fish-carrion traps. Dung was selected most often overall, while habitat and species affected the observed preferences. Los Tuxtlas study |
| Chobe National Park, Botswana; woodland savanna | Many abundant species were attracted to multiple bait types, but species also showed associations with particular dung categories or carrion. Dung traps accounted for most of the sampled assemblage’s species richness and abundance. Chobe study |
| Quebec, Canada; balsam fir and sugar maple forests | Deer-meat and dung traps sampled different beetle assemblages, with spatial variation along a north–south transect. Quebec study |
| Brazilian Atlantic Forest; rainy and dry seasons | Bait effects varied across seasons. Injured millipedes were particularly effective for capturing diverse dung beetles during the rainy season in the sampled forest remnants. Atlantic Forest study |
| Brazilian savanna and pasture sampling | A separate sampling-method study recorded 7,544 individuals from 43 species and cautioned that bait attractiveness can shift community metrics relative to flight-interception sampling. Sampling-method study |
These studies cannot be combined into a single ranking of baits or habitats: they sampled different regions, taxa, bait preparations, seasons and outcomes. A bait that catches many beetles may still miss species associated with other resources. In Botswana, for example, dung accounted for most richness and abundance, yet species associations with particular dung categories and carrion were also observed.

Does bait type change the result?
Yes. Bait type affects both how many beetles arrive and which species make up the catch. In the Great Plains study, average capture differed among dung categories and individual species had distinct preferences. In other studies, carrion or other baits attracted species not represented in the same way by dung. Trap catches therefore describe the response to the bait and method used, not an equivalent sample of all beetles at the site.

How to compare catches between habitats fairly
For a habitat comparison, keep the sampling method consistent and record the factors that could change a catch. If the goal is to characterize a broad community rather than one feeding guild, multiple bait types can provide a wider view—but the result remains selective.
- Use the same trap design and placement rules. Set traps in comparable positions and use the same bait amount and preparation.
- Match timing and effort. Keep deployment duration and collection schedule consistent; record date or season and weather where possible.
- Record habitat and bait details. Note habitat, bait type, trap setup and sampling effort so differences can be interpreted rather than attributed to habitat alone.
- Choose baits to fit the question. A single bait can target beetles attracted to that resource. Multiple baits can broaden the sampled assemblage, but do not turn a baited survey into a complete census.
- Interpret the metric carefully. Abundance, species richness and community composition are different outcomes. Do not treat catches from different bait types as equivalent measures of total beetle abundance.
A biodiversity handbook describes pitfall traps and bait choices for dung- and carrion-beetle surveys. It does not establish a universal consumer trap specification or one model suitable for every study; consistency of method is more important than relying on an unverified product claim. Why raw trap totals are not automatically comparable
Two catch totals are meaningful to compare only when the important sampling conditions are sufficiently alike. Differences in bait and preparation, habitat disturbance, season, weather, trap design and placement, deployment duration, effort and the beetle group sampled can all affect the result. A comparison should also distinguish whether it concerns abundance, richness or composition.
For example, a trap catching more beetles does not necessarily indicate that its habitat has more beetles overall: it may have used a more attractive bait, sampled a more active period or captured a different part of the community. Avoid comparing raw totals across studies unless bait, setup, timing and effort are comparable.
