Neither PSSR nor AMD FSR is a universal image-quality winner. Sony’s PSSR is an upscaling feature for supported PS5 Pro games; AMD FSR is a family of game-integrated technologies for PC and other platforms. To judge which looks better, compare the same game and rendering goal, then check detail and stability in motion—not just the feature name.
What PSSR and FSR do
Upscaling reconstructs an image for a higher-resolution output from a game rendered at a lower resolution. The result depends on more than the upscaler: the game’s implementation, internal resolution, settings, output target, and frame-rate goal all matter.

PSSR: Sony’s PS5 Pro feature
Sony describes PSSR as “an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them.” Sony reported on February 27, 2026 that PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 PS5 Pro titles. That is Sony’s adoption count, not an image-quality measurement, and it does not mean every title uses the upgraded version. Sony’s announcement
FSR: a family of AMD technologies
AMD uses FSR as a family name, not a single fixed feature. Its current Redstone terminology includes FSR Upscaling, formerly called FSR 4, which reconstructs visuals from lower-resolution frames. Separate Redstone components handle frame generation, ray regeneration, and radiance caching. A comparison should identify the specific FSR version and feature rather than treating all “FSR” implementations as equivalent. AMD’s FSR overview
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
Why the PS5 Pro and PC versions are not interchangeable
Sony says the upgraded PSSR algorithm and neural network stem from Project Amethyst, its collaboration with AMD. That shared development history does not mean PSSR and AMD’s PC implementations are the same product or have the same availability. PSSR is tied to supported PS5 Pro games and system-level support paths; AMD FSR support depends on the game, feature, GPU, and sometimes driver.
Even the same game can use different upscalers on different platforms. IO Interactive says 007 First Light uses upgraded PSSR on PS5 Pro and FSR 3.1.5 on other platforms. That makes the game a useful example of why a shared title name alone does not establish an apples-to-apples comparison. IO Interactive’s technology overview

PSSR on PS5 Pro
Sony announced upgraded PSSR in February 2026, describing a new algorithm and neural network that take a different approach from the original. Resident Evil Requiem was its first cited example. Sony later described a broader rollout and an optional “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” system setting for supported PS5 Pro games. The setting can be turned off if unexpected effects appear, and Sony cautions that results vary by title. Sony’s upgraded PSSR announcement Sony’s rollout update

AMD FSR on PC
AMD’s current FSR overview says ML-based FSR upscaling is available on Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics cards, with RX 6000 support planned for 2027. AMD’s separate supported-games page says Redstone titles require Adrenalin 25.12.1 or newer on RX 9000, while Redstone upscaling alone is available on RX 7000 with Adrenalin 26.6.2 or newer. These are AMD’s stated requirements; feature names, supported games, and drivers can change, so check both pages for the particular game and feature before relying on them. How to compare image quality fairly
There is no controlled PSSR-versus-FSR test in the cited sources that matches game builds, settings, internal resolutions, output targets, and hardware. A fair verdict therefore has to be specific to a game and configuration.
- Confirm the implementation. Check the game version, platform, and exact upscaler version or feature. A title may use different technologies on console and PC.
- Match the rendering goal. Record the mode, internal resolution, output resolution, and frame-rate target. Mode names such as Quality, Balanced, and Performance are not guaranteed to represent equal internal resolutions across platforms. Ubisoft says Assassin’s Creed Shadows on PS5 Pro has modes with different internal resolutions and dynamic resolution scaling. Ubisoft’s PS5 Pro technical coverage
- Inspect fine detail and motion. Look closely at vegetation, thin geometry, particles, transparency, and ray-traced effects. Ubisoft identifies these as demanding reconstruction cases in its Assassin’s Creed Shadows discussion; its description is an example from that game, not a universal benchmark.
- Watch for temporal artifacts. In motion, check for shimmer, flicker, ghosting, errors where objects appear or disappear, and loss of fine detail. A still image can miss behavior that becomes obvious during camera movement.
- Separate upscaling from the rest of the system. If resolution, frame rate, graphics settings, hardware, or driver differ, those differences can affect the result too. Do not attribute every visual or performance change to the upscaler.
- Check whether you can use it. On PS5 Pro, support depends on the game or supported system-level enhancement path. On PC, check the game integration and the GPU and driver requirements for the particular FSR feature.
Which should you choose?
If you are choosing a console, PSSR is relevant within the PS5 Pro’s supported games; it is not a PC feature you can install or select independently. If you are evaluating a PC, check which FSR version the game supports and whether your hardware and driver meet that feature’s requirements. Neither label by itself guarantees better image quality or performance in a particular game.
For a visual comparison, use the same game and, as closely as possible, equivalent output and frame-rate goals. Compare motion and fine detail alongside sharpness, and note differences in game settings and hardware. Sony and AMD describe improvements to their respective technologies, but vendor descriptions do not substitute for a matched independent test.
