For most devices, daylight saving time (DST) is handled by the time-zone rules—not by a standalone DST switch. Turn on automatic date and time and automatic time-zone selection where available. If the clock is still wrong, check the selected zone, location access, connectivity, updates and device restrictions before changing the clock manually.
Before changing settings: is the time or the time zone wrong?
If the clock is off by an hour, the device may have the wrong time-zone rule or may not have updated its zone. If the minutes or date are also wrong, check automatic date and time as well. Time-zone rules are set by jurisdictions and can change, so a device needs current rules to apply the correct local time.

On Windows, Microsoft explicitly says that turning on automatic time-zone selection also sets daylight saving time automatically. On Apple devices and Android, automatic time and time-zone settings are the first controls to check; the available controls and behavior can vary by device and region.

- Open Settings > General > Date & Time.
- Turn on Set Automatically. The iPhone uses the time zone to set the date and time.
- If the displayed time zone is wrong, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services, then check Setting Time Zone.
- Make sure the iPhone has internet access and install current iOS software. If a message says updated time-zone information is available, restart the iPhone.
If automatic time is unavailable or still incorrect, Apple documents manual selection of a time zone or date and time. Screen Time restrictions or a corporate profile can make the automatic control unavailable; options can also differ by carrier, country and region. See Apple Support’s guidance for time and time-zone settings.

Change DST-related settings on Android
- Open the Clock app.
- Tap More > Settings > Change date and time.
- Turn on Automatic date and time and, where available, Automatic time zone.
- If you need to choose a zone manually, turn off the automatic time-zone control if the device provides one, then select the time zone.
Some Android devices use location to determine the time zone. Support varies: some devices, including some Wi-Fi-only tablets, may offer only location-based time-zone setting. Manufacturers can change menu names and locations, so search Settings for “date and time” if Google’s Clock-app path does not match your device. See Google Android Help.
Change DST-related settings on Windows 10 or 11
- Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Turn on Set time automatically to let Windows set the clock.
- Turn on Set time zone automatically to let Windows select the zone; Microsoft says this also sets daylight saving time automatically.
- If automatic zone selection is off, use the separate Adjust for daylight saving time automatically control if it is available and appropriate for your zone. The page also provides manual time and time-zone controls.
Windows menu labels or available controls may differ by version, region or administrator policy. Microsoft’s current steps cover Windows 10 and 11: Set time, date, and time zone settings in Windows.

- Check both automatic controls. Enable automatic date/time and automatic time-zone selection where your device offers them. On Windows, note whether automatic zone selection or the separate DST control is in use.
- Verify the time zone. A correct clock setting paired with the wrong zone can still produce the wrong local time.
- Check location-based detection. Where supported, allow the location or system service used to determine the time zone. Not all devices expose the same options.
- Connect and update. Get the device online and install current system software so it can receive available time-zone information.
- Check restrictions. Screen Time, a carrier, a corporate profile or an administrator may limit automatic settings.
- Use manual settings as a fallback. Select the correct time zone or set the time manually if automatic mode remains unavailable or wrong, or if you specifically need a different zone.
When a jurisdiction changes its time-zone rules
A legal time-zone change can arrive too late for an operating-system update to be engineered, tested and published before it takes effect. Microsoft’s Windows guidance says that in this situation it recommends using the existing time zone until an update is available. This is a Windows-specific policy caveat, not general advice for every platform or jurisdiction. See Microsoft Learn’s Windows daylight saving time help.
