Choose the console around the games you want to play, the library and friends you already have, and whether you use discs—not a spec-sheet headline. PS5 is the stronger fit for PlayStation exclusives, DualSense features in supported games, or continuity with a PS4 library. Xbox Series X is the stronger fit for Xbox backward compatibility, supported Smart Delivery titles, Xbox One accessory carryover, or the Game Pass ecosystem. Check the exact console configuration and current local prices before buying.
Start with the games and people you care about
Make a short list of games you expect to play and friends you want to play with. Check each title’s current platform availability, cross-play support, and whether it is included in a subscription plan you would actually use. Game availability and service catalogs change, so do not choose based on a remembered launch lineup or assume a particular game is currently included.

PlayStation’s official PS5 page highlights PlayStation console exclusives, but exclusivity can change and some games may also be available elsewhere. Compare the exact titles you want rather than treating either brand’s catalog as a fixed advantage. If most of your group already plays on one platform, that can matter more than a small hardware difference.

Choose by your existing library and accessories
If you own PS4 games
PS5 supports a broad PS4 library: Sony’s current product page says over 8,500 PS4 games are playable, and selected games may benefit from Game Boost. That count is Sony’s claim, not a promise that every PS4 game works. Check Sony’s compatibility information for a specific title before relying on it, especially if your collection includes less common releases or you use a disc copy.
#1 Best Overall
- Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
- Tested and works well. Nice condition
Disc ownership matters: a PS4 disc needs a console with a disc drive. The PS5 Digital Edition cannot play discs as sold. Sony describes an optional drive for CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim model groups, which must be paired during setup using an internet connection; confirm the model number before purchasing a drive.
If you own Xbox games or accessories
Microsoft says Series X supports thousands of games across four Xbox generations, with Xbox One progress, achievements, friends, and accessories carrying over. Support varies by title and accessory, so verify the exact game or device. For supported Smart Delivery games, Microsoft says: “With Smart Delivery you can buy a supported game once and always save the best available version for whatever console you play on.” The feature applies to supported games, not every Xbox title. Decide whether you need a disc drive
Disc consoles are useful if you buy used games, borrow or lend physical copies, collect boxed editions, or watch Blu-ray movies. Digital consoles require purchases and downloads through the relevant store; they remove the option to use game discs. Check the configuration rather than relying on the family name: both platforms have digital and disc-equipped Series X/PS5 options, and product details vary by edition.

Sony’s current US PS5 page says that from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be available for purchase at PlayStation Store and retailers in digital format only. It also says discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. This announced future policy concerns newly released games and does not say that existing discs stop working. Sony PS5 product page

Compare subscriptions by the games you will play
PlayStation Plus has multiple membership plans with tier-dependent benefits, including Game Catalog, Classics Catalog, cloud streaming, and trials. Sony says most PS4 and PS5 online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus, with some games exempt; verify the requirement for the game you play. Sony also lists 100GB of online save storage for PS5 and PS4 saves. Sony PlayStation Plus support
Xbox promotes Game Pass and a library of games, but plan contents, first-party release timing, prices, and regional availability can change. Before subscribing, check the current local plan terms and confirm the games you want are included. Compare the recurring cost over the time you expect to keep the console, rather than treating a subscription as an automatic saving.

Display
Both consoles target high-resolution gaming, but a console’s maximum capability is not a promise that every game will run at that setting. Actual resolution, frame rate, ray tracing, and enhancement vary by title and model. A 4K or high-refresh-rate display, HDMI VRR support, the game itself, and the selected graphics mode all affect what you can use. Microsoft lists HDMI 2.1, VRR, ALLM, 4K capability, and up to 120 FPS for Series X; Sony describes PS5 Pro modes including 60fps or up to 120fps with 4K output and ray tracing for compatible titles. These are manufacturer statements, not a direct comparative benchmark.

PS5 supports an M.2 SSD expansion drive that meets Sony’s requirements. Xbox supports a separately sold performance-matched Storage Expansion Card, as well as USB 3.1 external HDD storage. The USB route is not equivalent to the expansion card: check Microsoft’s game-storage and playback rules for the titles you plan to keep on it. Include the cost of a compatible expansion option when comparing the total setup.

Built-in capacity is nominal, not a promise of usable game space; system software reserves part of the storage. Sony lists the standard PS5 at 1TB and the Digital Edition at 825GB, while PS5 Pro has 2TB built in. Microsoft lists Series X configurations with 1TB or 2TB. What the specifications can—and cannot—tell you
Sony’s CFI-21XX manual lists an 8-core/16-thread Zen 2 CPU, a 10 TFLOPS RDNA-based GPU, 16GB GDDR6, and an M.2 SSD expansion connector for the models covered by that manual. Microsoft lists a 12 TFLOPS RDNA 2 GPU and 16GB GDDR6 for Series X. Those are manufacturer specifications, not a reliable way to predict which console looks or runs better in a particular game. Architecture, game optimization, display mode, and the exact model matter; compare supported modes for the games you play instead of ranking consoles by teraflops alone.
